  • GO transit's one-off MPI locomotive is interestingly the reason MP54ACs exist.

    647 is regarded as a prototype for the tier 4. One of the major differences is that it still has DC traction motors from its origins as a MP40PH-3C. Metrolinx commissioned the Tier 4s for three main reasons: 1) self-rescue-ability due to engine failure, 2) reduced emissions and 3) better performance for reducing travel times (this has not really come into effect because the schedule is built to accommodate the slowest engines). Tier 4s have two 2750HP Cummins QSK60 V16 4-stroke prime movers each capable of powering the traction motors as well as providing head-end power to the coaches. If one engine dies, the train can limp itself home to get repaired which is a huge advantage. When a regular MP40 EMD V16 prime mover ceases to function, the locomotive is dead and needs to be rescued if the crew cannot fix the problem. This obviously creates operational chaos, especially when it occurs in single track territory. Unfortunately, Tier 4s have as some reliability issues themselves and at this point there are no plans to acquire more to completely replace the fleet with them. The EMD prime movers in all other locomotives are proving to be mostly reliable and even some of the F59s are continuing to prove that simplicity in design is better than overly complicated, computerized systems. I even heard Metrolinx is trying to buy back some of the F59s they sold.

      I think they’re done making the MPXpress at this point. Wabtec doesn’t list the locomotive on their portfolio anymore. And if GO is trying to reacquire F59s, good luck because most of them are now with other operators.

      Metrolink has some just sitting around, idk if its possible but there's something to watch out for
      Also EXO plans to retire theirs soon, so GO could get those back.

      I also noticed the T4s having problems, so much so that its not uncommon for them to be on 6 car set as those can be powered by one engine instead of the two they have.

      @@davidng2336 With MPI now being under the same roof as GE I have to wonder if they may look into a new passenger locomotive using the tier 4 GEVO engine, that would likely be cheaper than the MP54AC and the GEVO engine is as solid as it gets. MPI has already built a locomotive with the GEVO tier 3 engine, the HSP-46 albeit for one customer only.

      To be fair. Externally, it's not much different than the MPI MPXpress units (aside from the MP32PH-Q)

    Sucks that MPI and EMD haven't had the success of their MP54 and F125 locomotives as Siemens has had with their Chargers.

      The MPI and EMD situation also got complicated when Wabtech bought MPI. Though that potentially makes it easier for MPI to produce a tier 4 locomotive as they have increased access to GEVO tier 4 engines which might allow for a cheaper tier 4 than the MP54AC. MPI is now basically the passenger division of GE with MPI and GE transportation both being part of Wabtech.

    • @mrvwbug4423
      @mrvwbug4423 Před měsícem

      @@GintaPPE1000 Siemens was able to deliver tier 4 locomotives in a timely manner as they have the production capacity, hence why they got the bulk of the market share. MPI has only a fraction of the production capacity and also doesn't make a locomotive that meets the loading gauge for Penn station. Progress Rail/EMD can barely keep up with orders for tier 4 freight locomotives, they probably lose money on the F125, and the F125 is known to have some design issues that make it unsuitable for operation above 80mph.

    Too bad that WABTEC doesn't list MPI on it's locomotive portfolio anymore. I think it would be interesting to see much older MP36PH locomotives converted to MP54AC's. Something like that would be useful for Amtrak California and the Pacific Surfliner once Caltrain and Metrolink plan to retire their MPI engines, even for more trains and capacity.

    • @GamingRailfanner
      @GamingRailfanner  Před měsícem +1

      The MP54ACs wouldn't really be great for the Surfliner as the Surfliner is more high speeds and short 6-7 car trains, the MP54ACs are more for pulling long passenger trains. Maybe for Amtrak California but again all that horsepower for short trains.
      I mean sure they can use just one engine but then there's no reason to have an MP54AC in the first place if you're just gonna use one engine.
