- Ever wondered the full story of 6902? or what the hell happened to 6900 during the first few years of Surfliner service? Well both of them got into crashes in 2000 and 2001 that it seems almost everyone has forgotten about, So I decided to cover it here

I think there was an incident of 6901 in 2002 but I’m not exactly sure. It might’ve been a similar story to 6902. I believe it was a standard automobile that got hit, and burned the cab of 6901, though not as severe as ‘902.
It’s crazy that Surfliner incidents date back to the early days of service and to this day incidents still continue. Just couple months ago I saw 790 almost hit a car at s rose ave which would have maybe caused a derailment and halted Metrolink 117, 119 maybe Amtrak 11 and the Guadalupe hauler LOF66. Its sad that these cab cars take all these heavy hits but at least they do their job and have continued for 24 years (until Amtrak makes the decision to retire them in the future and replace them with new cab cars similar to Metrolink’s Rotem Commuter Cars).
A couple of our cab cars up in NorCal had similar incidents. 8301 was involved in a collision with a vehicle and was burned. 8301 was repaired and given a fresh coat of paint a year ago. 8313 was also involved in a fiery vehicle collision and is still out of service sitting in the Oakland yard
i don’t think i’ve ever heard of the 8313 incident and i live in the bay area
I dunno, he said 6902’s parts are gonna be used for repairing other locomotives. I think 8313 will have some of 6902’s parts.
@@lucky_railfans_trains_2009 No, 6902 has been sold to BUGX/Dieselmotive Company in Turlock, California, who is selling the good parts of 6902 to other railroads who need them.

2:19 Amtrak Surfliner cab car 6900 (now named as Point Buchon) crashed? I thought it was cab car 6901 (now named as Point Hueneme) that crashed years ago and got repaired.

It was 6900.
The cab car returned to service in late 2006, six years after the crash.
There are a few helicopter shots of the wreck but you have to buy usage them from the media company that owns them, which can be expensive.

The scary thing is there are still lots of unprotected crossings between Moorpark and Ventura. There is a lot of farmland in that area, and there are lots of crossings for farm equipment to get between the fields. I do hate sounding defeatist, but given the insane things I have seen people do around grade crossings in the Bay Area, slapping lights and bells does not always mean people will react accordingly.

3:42 I heard him say Oxnard and it reminded me of F59PHI 458, which crashed into a semi truck causing it to be almost completely destroyed. It is now in service but its now with METRA
I remember that accident video of it was in an episode of destroyed in seconds
I remember it too. The F59PHI was completely destroyed but its repaired and continued service until being sold to METRA

Finally we have new information and image of what happened to 6902 and I’m so surprised that 6900 had also gotten a incident.
Hey bro I love the content! Can you do a video on Metrolink’s riverside line? It’s currently the 2nd deadliest commuter rail line in the country. Which is a shame given that it gets from LA to riverside in half the time as the 91 line
So Pacific Surfliners were still running with locomotive towards LA in 2001? When did they switch them all to face away from LA?
A recent assessment I read said 6902 could have been feasibly repaired if done at the time but after over 20 years sitting in the elements it was no longer possible. Such a shame.

I remember seeing a couple of British Rail level crossing safety videos that have since been removed from CZcams (copyright probably). One of them showed how private crossings on farmland, for instance, have phones. The crossing user is required to call their local signaler and request permission to cross the tracks with things like a tractor, truck, or animals. They don't need to call if they themselves are walking across. The signaler must confirm that no train is approaching and then applies a red signal before giving permission for the vehicle/livestock to cross.
Public RR crossings here in America have the Blue Emergency Sign on them so you can notify the signaler of an emergency (like a stuck vehicle). I wonder how much trouble it would be for UP and the other railroads to add a wireless phone or callbox next to these private vehicle crossings and (because the tracks are their private property) require users to call the local signaler to get permission to cross with things like trucks or tractors?
Good documentary. Is any of this info from the surface transportation board by chance? They usually have extensive reports about wrecks.
I found most of the info from the 6902 report on one of those reports I couldn’t find the one on the 6900 crash though

6902 sadly crash but a plane crash in New York again in 2001 flight 587 I think it’s a day apart so I really don’t like 2001 because of all of this
Oh, just AA 587? I can name a couple of others...Fall 2001 was pretty _eventful_ in the worst possible way.
Fall starts on 9/22, that means 9/11 was in the summer.

Moorpark to Oxnard has had 5 bad road vs rail incidents; 3 surfliner, 1 metrolink and 1 starlight derailment in the last 25 years.
Really we should just get the whole coast line out of UPs hands, double track and then upgrade all crossings that stay to being paved with gates. So many private crossings exist to give farmers slightly more land or a slightly shorter route.

I’ve lived in San Diego since 1998 and I never heard about those accidents. Probably cause they happened in LA county and didn’t make local San Diego news at the time in the 2000/2001 this was all news to me
There were both in Ventura county, but yes that’s probably why you didn’t hear about them.

At what point after this did the Surfliners switch their operating orientation? They currently pull away from LA Union Station and push towards it, whereas this shows them running the opposite. Does anyone know when they changed?
Early 2005 was when they made the switch. I believe it had something to do with Miramar hill they wanted the train pulling on the steeper side (towards Sorrento Valley before the summit), but I could be wrong

Both of these took place during my birthday month November my birthday is November 2nd and the one in 2001 took place the day before American airlines 587 crashed on takeoff and months after the 9/11 attacks small world

Great video, my only gripe is that your pronounced Camarillo and somis wrong, Camarillo is Cam-Uh-RE-O and somis is So-miss, but other than that fantastic video (also side note it seems Ventura county does not like Amtrak cause Amtrak trains keep derailing there)

Not enough trains on the Santa Barbara sub for UP to justify upgrading those crossings. I'm sure they'd love to pass that responsibility onto either the local municipalities or Amtrak or Metrolink (SCRRA). A lot of that territory is still TWC ABS. That right there should tell you how much UP is investing in it.
All of the Santa Barbra Sub is now CTC. The state of California paid for those upgrades so they can run more frequent services in the future. Unknown when, they will have to get more equipment for sure first

They could always just close these crossings since they are private unprotected crossings. The farmers may not like it, but honestly that kind of heavy equipment should never cross a mainline railroad.
