  • Today I'm comparing four LED flame bulbs to see which is best. One is an As Seen on TV offering and the other three are popular options on Amazon. (By the way, CZcams has eliminated polls, so you won't see it anymore!)

    Here's a thing you might not know: most of those "flickering" flame effect lights animate the flame effect by using a very special signal source - Chinese jingle song generators! if you connected a speaker you could hear music! you can even "pick up" the light using a light dependent resistor and amplify it! Those jingle chips are used because of how cheap they are - cheaper than making a dedicated "flame" chip. Hope someone found that fact fun!

    I'm 78 years old, that being said I remember when Bell and Howell was the best movie projectors and cameras. Now Bell and Howell stands for "Don't buy me I am junk." Maybe not the same company? Of the ones I've tried, the Hudsons are my favorite so far--relatively bright and natural motion--and they have a range of packages available. • @Turbobuttes
    @Turbobuttes Před 4 lety +3

    My favorite would be the Omicoo. Modes aside it's simply the one that flickers the least, so you could actually read something next to it. More of a candle effect than a fireplace effect, which makes complete sense for a light fixture.

  • @unohav1
    @unohav1 Před 5 lety +3

    I own the Omicoo one. I bought them for my outside lights for Halloween. They looked very cool, however I wouldn’t recommend as a normal outside light as it is much dimmer than a normal bulb, and this one was even the brightest I could find. Would definitely look cool as accent lighting indoors, but I only used for Halloween and packed them away. I also never used the other modes, which I regret, because that “breathing” mode looked cool. Next time I unpack them I will have to do so.

    I bought the Omicoo bulbs (4 pack) and I was so excited to finally get them. Upon plugging one into a lamp to test, I was sadly disappointed that the color wasn't a flame color at all - it was PINK!
    I thought maybe it was the color of the lamp shade or the wall paint in the room so I tried them outside with 2 bulbs in my porch lights where I hoped to use these and they were still PINK!
    I tried taking pictures or video with my phone and the craziest thing was I could not get the pink to show at all. It looked prefect on video or picture. I left them on for hours hoping they may changed after use but nope, never changed.
    So my only complaint is color, the way it worked and the direction change when flipped was great. But I don't want a flickering pink light on my porch, lol. Attempting to return.

    I like the lumiereholic the best as it looks the most like an actual flame. The others don't really look like flames to me, but that might be because of them being on camera instead in person. • @Thatsmessedupman
    @Thatsmessedupman Před 5 lety +11

    I think the mistake you are making is that these should be put in some sort of open shade or cover and thus you might want the brighter if your shade is or light is dense or frosted.

  • @MrBomasBalloons
    @MrBomasBalloons Před 5 lety +3

    I've tried 2 brands, Luxon and Eco-LED. The bulbs are pretty much identical, and look almost identical to the omicoo in your review. Both are 4 mode bulbs (including upside-down mode). Both have very good flame effects. The thing that bothers me about them is that they are both slightly pinkish-orange. It's a very strange color. I would like them to be more yellow-orange, like a real flame. On camera they appear much more yellow than they are live, so photos and videos are deceptive. I still like them well enough, but I look forward to the technology getting better in the next few years.

    • @mookzmom
      @mookzmom Před 5 lety

      Mr. Boma's Balloons, HEY! I didn’t know about those other 2 brands, but you bring up an interesting question now. I’m thinking you could color the bulb color if you can find a heat resistant dye...like maybe a resin dye or something. If you colored the cover an amber or yellow color, I bet the flame would look better,, eh?

  • @bodeine454
    @bodeine454 Před 3 lety

    It's hard to tell exactly what they look like on video vs in person but I agree that the Hudson has the most interesting flickering effect followed probably by the Omicoo mostly because of the four modes but I also like the effect of the Lumiereholic, I think it's unique. The Bell and Howell looks good also but maybe it's best intended for a farther distance away or inside of a frosty or colored or tinted globe. 👍

  • @Timzart7
    @Timzart7 Před 3 lety +1

    In the year that the first 60 watt LED light bulb appeared on Amazon for $80, I wanted LEDs for their energy efficiency. However, I was an early adopter of the compact fluorescent bulbs when they were over $20 each and so I knew to wait for prices to come down. Anyway, in those early LED years I bought a .3 watt flicker LED color-changing nightlight from Walgreens for about $6. It flickers and fades in and out and imparts a kind of life to the ambience in a room, especially at night. At that time, I thought, wouldn't it be great if they could make one of these to look like firelight?
    The reviewer is looking at these in terms of what looks the most flame-like, and that is definitely a consideration if you are using it in an outdoor lamp you want to look like a gaslight or candle. However, there's another use. Put behind something or in a corner not in direct view, how much does it look like real dancing firelight in a room? That is what I want, that cozy indirect firelight effect. And I just say "Hey Google, play fireplace sound" to my Google Home mini and there is a nice crackling fireplace that will play all night if you want. The sound transforms the light to something a lot better than light alone, which can look like faulty wiring.
    I am smoke sensitive. I can't have a wood stove, so these lights are the next best thing. So yesterday I received my first 2/$10 LED flame effect Ebay bulbs and they are just okay. They were advertised on Ebay as being made by Lumiereholic by the seller, but they are not as nice as the Lumiereholic bulb you show or the other videos of this brand bulb, so I'm disappointed. Instead, they are narrower, and small.
    For anyone who wants to see if they like the ambience of a flame effect bulb in their room before buying one, there are CZcams videos of fireplaces, some that last hours. Just put one on and turn the room lights off and relax. I captured some fireplace videos off CZcams, and they are nice to play but I don't want to play my TV or computer for hours at night just for that ambience.
    If you keep your room or house on the cold side during the winter to save energy, as I do, a flame effect bulb can even generate a warming placebo effect. Again, don't stare at it. It's not going to look like a real fire or have the beauty of a candle flame. But the flickering ambience is pretty close. I think mine flickers a little too fast, and might be a little more blinky than I'd like, but I'm not sure. I'll have to do some experiments with videos of fireplaces to compare. I'd like one where you could control the flicker rate and other parameters but haven't read of them making those.
    Anyway, if someone out there bought a flame effect bulb they love, and they're familiar with the ambience from firelight, I'd appreciate you telling me the brand/model. I am going to read more about the one the reviewer here liked.

Second both the Omicoo and hudson do look amazing you have to consider the fixture you will be putting it in. The downside of the Omicoo for me was the tall white base it has compared to the others and its overall height.

    At face value this light bulb trend is cool, but I can't think of anywhere in my house I'd put one and not get terribly annoyed by it after a day.

    I think the Hudson was the best. The one with 4 modes is a neat idea but if you have it plugged into a light fixture each time you turn in the switch it will be in a different mode. The bulb should have a dedicated mode switch so it will stay the same each time it's turned on.

    Most Realistic Flame Effect: Bell + Howell I do a lot of working with fire, and this one easily has the most realistic flame flicker effect. Unfortunately, it's a case that's similar to fake blood for props, where the real stuff doesn't necessarily look best. It also gets props for being the brightest on the list.
    Best Looking Flame Effect: Hudson This is defiantly going to be the one I would buy if I wanted a flame effect in my electrolier. It easily looks the best, while still looking really bright.
    Most Versatile: Omicoo Okay, so this is easily the most overrated one, and my *least* favorite. To start, it has *3* modes, not 4. The animation flipping is not another mode. Secondly, only two of the modes will ever be used, as the "breathing" effect has no use. What I *do* like though, is that it actually has a regular light mode, easily making it the most useful of the group, as it has a non-decorative use.
    Least Harsh: Lumierholic This one's actually my second favorite. Why? Because it isn't super bright. All the other options actually seem better fitted to overhead lighting becaue of their brightness. This one is the one that I would use in my table lamps, as it's not overly bright like all the others, and you wouln't see the fake-ness it gives off under the shade.
    Also, please test lights using shades next time if you're testing in a lamp, as that's how they're going to be seen for 99% of the time.

      I have the Omicoo. If you turn it off for a few seconds, it resets to flame mode. You don;t have to constantly cycle modes. Turn it on - flame. Turn it off for 5 seconds - flame. It's not a hassle in the least.

    If I want a fireplace or a torch look, I would go with one of these. However, if I want to emulate a candle flame, then none of them, as a properly trimmed candle wick, and if the candle is not standing in a breeze, the flame does not flicker. That said, I would go with the Hudson. And withthat said, thank you for another great review!

    It may be valid to try these, especially the bell and howell one, while in a lampshade or with some kind of diffusion as many lightbulbs are not used naked.
    I will not be using any of these though, just due to utility

    I purchased LED flame bulbs to use for Halloween and you really need to see these bulbs from a distance to see if they have the desired look of a real flame. I put mine in my outside coach lights. Distance and what kind of glass they are flickering through (since yours are in a LAMP) really makes a huge difference. When purchasing these kind of bulbs you also have to sure have the right bulb BASE size as they can come in larger sizes than a normal lamp base. Some of the bulbs have lights that just constantly go up then down, repeat, and look stupid - not like a real flame.

    Nice for decoration, but not for ordinary lighting. And it's good if it is placed in a place where the bulb is visible, so that we know that the light is from the bulb and not from a fire.

    One unfortunate thing ( which is not the reviewers fault) is that a camera's response to light will always give the false impression that these flame effects contain many color variations, from nearly white, through yellow and orange. To the eye however, all the LED flame bulbs I've ever seen are pretty much one color, orange. Some may be slightly closer to yellow, but none will offer a color similar enough to a candle flame ( what you expect from a "soft white" LED house lamp). As such, many will find them so glaringly orange as to limit their use to a Halloween decoration. My advise, see one one display somewhere and decide if you like the color before buying based on videos.
