    Source Info:
FM Broadcast (WBCN Boston); Master Reel to Reel ... Matt Smith's 1st generation Reels
    Notes:
    - Thanks to Matt Smith for the 1st generation reel source and the transfer
    - Thanks to Charlie Miller for coordinating this effort
    - Based on this copy, we now know, that the majority of what we thought were tape flips on previous versions, were actually the editing of the radio station id's and between song banter/tunings. Previous versions had cuts at the beginning of "Black Peter", the end of Sunshine Daydream, in the middle of "Deal" and in the transition between "Turn On Your Lovelight ... Going Down The road Feeling Bad". The only cut remaining is the one in the middle of "Deal" and we also now know that there was no "gozinta" from Lovelight... GDTRFB. Lovelight ends, there's a radio station id and then GDTRFB starts. This transcription also contains most, if not all, of the between song banter and tunings
    - Upgrade to all circulating copies (3/21/2018)

To help promote the latest live album “Skull and Roses,” The Dead (or Warner Brothers) made a deal in advance of the fall/ winter tour to do as many simulcast FM broadcasts from whatever local station that was willing to carry it. This resulted in the first wave of quality tapes to circulate among the faithful. Some found their way to bootleg LP’s. The “Felt Forum” NYC show being the most widely available . That was actually my first live Dead boot, as it was sold at many record stores and head shops. Locally for me, the Auditorium Theatre Chicago from WGLD Oak Park was one of the earliest live cassette tapes I had.
These FM’s began in Minneapolis on 10-19 and ended at Winterland on New Years Eve. Around 16 or 17 shows were broadcast to the respective local radio listeners. This ramped up the trading culture more than people realize, and gave the band much needed national radio exposure.

Many FM stations broadcast rock and roll shows in the early 70's. College radio stations would do the same. It was great. Do they do that now? Of course not.

Nice job on the story line I was just a baby when this came out.
Just love their jam as an adult
FM needs to return to doing things like the King Biscuit or was it the Queen Biscuit Show late at night that shared concerts to the masses?
Thanks again for making the scene have some texture and relevance in history.

Another great way to start a day of energy conservation efforts alongside a Wall of Sound post! Even though the world is in an imperfect place, the boys always seem to offer us all a means to ground ourselves. Thanks be to the Grateful Dead, the tapers, and the archivists for the continuous outpouring music. May generation after generation get to listen to the sweet, sweet sounds that fill the air. Imagine a Band that changed the American Experience for the BETTER ?!
Just saying how many people I have met that said they just loved the people & the scene.
The music validated the experience of a reality
of kindness and love towards your fellow man.
Didn’t matter your size sex or color or lack there of any rainbows tie dye or bubbles.
Yet the truth be told the the planet is a better place having the paradigm affected by that sense of community.
A sincerity on an emotional level of ALL humans are humans
And they have right to celebrate life with their fellow humans
who share a similar empathy and respect for what really counts
Respect the respect of God in the music that was the inspiration
that will never end for our countless generations of descendants to enjoy.
Thank You Wall of Sound for sharing this part of American History of Music
preserved in the present to still
Be loved and enjoyed by all of us on planet Earth!
BRAVO to the level of production clarity and fidelity
As well as the experience of being there with the happy dancing people!!

    • @ZionForman
      @ZionForman Před 9 měsíci +2

@@hubertsumlin9697 , my personal opinion is that the second half of 1971 is superior to 1972, generally speaking, there are exceptions of course, but in general I prefer 71. part of the reason for that is the gear they were using still has that old sound and by 72 they were already moving in the direction of an arena rock setup and sound, which, in my opinion was not favorable, not to the music of the Grateful Dead or music in general. but historically speaking that's how music moved out of the 60s and into the 70s. across the board the early 70s was the peak of rock music and no doubt 1972 was a fantastic year for the Grateful Dead.

@fordprefect7316 No Freebird, but just before Not Fade Away, at 2:13:32, some girl (followed by a louder guy) shouts, “Paint It Black, you devil!” - which, of course, was an imitation of the girl who yells it before “Sympathy For The Devil” on the Stones’ “Get Yer Ya Yas Out”: czcams.com/video/tM5CuW6Wd7o/video.htmlfeature=shared About 12 seconds later, another dude yells, “Judas!”, imitating the dingbat from Bob Dylan’s 5/17/66 show in Manchester.
