    Viewer pep talk to Morgan... I think it's a magnificent structure, a lasting legacy. I think of all the craftsmen and tradesmen who got honest pay for practicing their craft. But mainly I wanted to say that this online channel with nearly 900 thousand subscribers is also a work of art. You took the raw materials and the skills and talents within yourself and created a value added product, which people like me consume. Well done!

    Honestly, the sponsor today got me, my school and team recently lost a kid to himself, the whole school is wearing his favorite color today. I hope that everyone here is doing great, remember to reach out to people and don’t soak in your own sadness, the kid didn’t think many people would care but at least a third of the school is mourning. People care about you whether you know them or not, please get help even if it’s just telling a friend.

    Thinking out loud here, if you plan to put a greenhouse on the back, you might want to think about getting some gutters up so you can rainwater harvest so you can water your plants inside the greenhouse. Also, not sure how close that building is to the raised bed garden, but you may also be able to set up a watering system from that barn roof as well. You have a heck of a roof there, why not use it to its full ability? One thing I've learned is those darn vegetables take a whole lot of water, much more than I ever realized. And, here I am, spending more of Morgan's money, lol. Anyway, that's what I would do.

    • @SeekingTheLoveThatGodMeans7648
      @SeekingTheLoveThatGodMeans7648 Před 6 měsíci +15

      While Morgan already has a water supply, a roof fed runoff supply (rain barrels with taps?) could add to sustainability. I think he'd add it to a list of desiderata.

      The (possible??) problem with gutters is "snow".
      The current roof is designed and built to shed snow. Gutters will just cause it to build up -- until something breaks (They may be ways around this.)

    I am super happy to know that the CZcams revenue helped pay for this lovely post and beam barn! Given how much work, creativity and skill go into Gold Shaw Farm’s videos Morgan must feel like he has more than two full time jobs in the summer. Small farms have always had to diversify to make ends meet, often with the farmer working a full time job off farm a lot of the time. I think it is so smart that Morgan found a 21st century way to fill this gap! There is a downside to sharing this much of your life online so here’s hoping the Golds get a little zing of joy every time they look at their new barn and think it’s still worth it to continue posting videos. Congratulations on a barn that is functional but also a thing of beauty 👏👏👏👏👏👏👏

      right, I was going to say, a bit over 200k is not bad at all, considering that a two-room, one floor house in one of the cheapest regions of NYS, which is on the NE, is around that price. I thought he would spend way over a half million with this project.

    To me, it is a work of art. And the main fellow and all the artisans who did the work got fair recompense and it helps preserve these skills. Truly truly exquisite artwork. My one thought about the greenhouse, in case you haven't considered this yet, is that greenhouses produce a LOT of moisture and humidity, which isn't all that compatible with wood structures. That moisture and humidity can attract termites and wood-eating fungi. So that needs to be taken into account. Great job, Morgan, and it adds so much to the Vermont landscape. Here in the South (where I'm stuck), all you see is the old barns falling down, you never see a new wood farm structure, ever. And there are probably good reasons for that, but just saying, to see the old traditions live on at such a scale is a delight.

  • @leekoss7083
    @leekoss7083 Před 6 měsíci +4

    Considering your nearby creek and the flooding that you experience this late summer, you were were totally smart to go with the gravel floor for the barn. You are allowing water to drain into the soil rather than pooling around an enormous concrete slab. The design helps conserve water and is better for your ecosystem.
    I think your old barn was well designed, too - it has lasted so long with minimal maintenance. Maybe you’ll get the grant from the state of Vermont for a new roof someday.
    You are using both barns since you are wintering the cattle in the old barn and using it for extra storage, too. Good!
    I’m not an engineer just a lady who has learned a bit about these sorts of thing during my life.
    Congrats to you and Allison.🎉🎉🎉🎉

    Very solid looking, and beautifully crafted. Hard to believe that not so long ago, everyone made these entirely by hand - no cranes to raise the framing, etc. How hard people worked just to survive on this land. And for the "true Vermonters" who have hostility toward someone like Morgan, toward tourists and newly arrived property owners, consider the plight of the Native Americans, who occupied this land for millennia before the European Americans who now control it.

      @@kickthecat75 Technological or other advantage is a two edged sword before God. From whom much has been given, much will be required. To disregard this is not only cynical but to woo a baleful fate. Notice how Morgan is so mindful of the earth. This mindfulness bids fair to be richly rewarded by heaven one day. American Indians were also frequently mindful of the earth, the gift of the ruling great spirit they believed in, which is why heaven to them looks like a happy hunting ground. We have created, however, an unhappy barren ground. It would be fair to call that a hell.

    A beautiful and very practical barn.
    Morgan, I'm sure you're already taking care of this, if not, I recommend 5 lbs ABC fire extinguishers at each entrance, on select post beams and upstairs.
    Also, smoke & carbon monoxide detectors on each floor.
    As you are aware, smoke & carbon monoxide detectors have a minimum 10 year life cycle because the radio active isotope sensor degrades with time; even if the battery still works. Most modern smoke & carbon monoxide detectors are designed with no battery replacement because the entire unit should be replaced.

    It's a really excellent addition to the existing farm. I'm excited to see how the other parts of the plan- organizing, hatchery, greenhouse develop! I have to admit I'm still one of those viewers holding out for you to be able to beautifully restore and make full use of the old barn, but I know original plans for that didn't workout and that that is a major, "No real farmer would ever" kind of project, but still crossing my fingers for that one day being realistic.

    For everything it took to get that barn built, that's not too bad of a price. When I saw the $7500 for the foundation, I was surprised it wasn't more. I live in Florida and metal barns are generally what people have built. For the same size and all of the little extra stuff (stairs, overhang, gravel floor) that would be a comparable price here.

    We didn't have the deep pockets as you did for your barn, but we did hire 'Carolina Carports' to build our metal barn - about 1,200 sq ft, and it was about $40K with the cement slab and the metal barn structure, but worth every dime. We got it in RED. So are you going to ever paint this barn or did you use a natural stain on the exterior wood? I also cut out a circle, painted, and hung a Pennsylvania Dutch hex sign on the barn facing the road - (good luck sign).

    My guess when I saw the frame of about 1/4 mill finished was spot. And personally for what you got and its intended use was a bargain. That quit possibly will be at minimum as long lived as the dairy barn. 🎉😊 Provided it is well maintained. The exterior will weather and you may consider a quality coat of barn red paint on exposed wood OR some other spray on quality wood preservation that keeps the bare wood look. Further, others will disagree but your choice of piers & gravel will give you more flexibility in the long run. Again, provided it is properly maintained.

    From someone who works as a General Contractor in Commercial Construction many states away from yours (NM), the cost presented for a hand-hewn, heavy timber structure, with the unique features of your barn, seems more than reasonable these days.
    Personally, when the grand tally was told, I thought wow, that’s incredibly inexpensive.
    Good job Morgan on taking this project from idea to reality without major heartbreak.

    Yes, I would be interested to see more about how you intend to organize the workshop area. Though (and I'm sure you know this) the challenge isn't coming up with the organizing intention, the challenge is following through on implementing and keeping up with it over the long term. As for the barn: I just can't get over how beautiful it is. Post-and-beam is good for a very long time, if the wood is protected. Regarding that: I LOVE the natural wood color. Yes, you will probably have to cover it in *something* to protect it from the elements and time, but my vote would be for a transparent coating of some kind to keep the natural wood color (I realize that might not be possible).
