    As someone that just came off of 8th Gen Intel (i3-8100 and then i5-8400) to 9th Gen (i7-9700F) just a few months ago, frankly both of them hold up really well still, especially paired with a good GPU. I've my old 8400 now sitting in my productivity rig. The 8100 is going to be put into a rig for my nephew I'm putting together, as his first PC.

    Built a system around that CPU, for a friends son, not so long ago. i7-8700, MSI Z370 Mortar, 16GB ram, RTX 2060S, 650 watt PSU, 500GB boot drive and a 3TB HDD. Works like a charm and the kid's happy. Got the CPU, cooler, RAM and MB cheap because soda had been spilled on it, a quick wash, rinse, dry, new BIOS battery and it was working. Paid ~$45 for the combo as it was listed as "not working/for parts".
    I doubt the guy knew anything about the parts.

    0:36 I got my Xeon with 16 gb dual channel ram and no cooler, for 81 bucks. The Xeon in question is a E5 2670 v3. Your chip is newer, but at LESS that $100 I couldn't pass it up. I don't like buying the consumer stuff, it's always 20% or so too high.

    8700-2080 was my first build. Thing still performs quite well to this day. Once I put an AIO on it, and tweaked perf with ThrottleStop, the 8700 will just stay locked at 4.3. A good Air Cooler with some good paste would work well too. I still have my 8700 system and have a soft spot for that chip. It performs quite well for what it is. I mean I wish it were 8core-16thread. But still the 6/12 performs very well. Nearly exact same performance as the 10th gen i5-10400.

    My buddy hooked me up with his old system. It has a i7 8700 and 16GB of RAM. After adding a 4070 Super I ended up with a really capable system for $600. The 8700 was worrying me in terms of bottlenecking… but honestly I’m getting stellar performance. Able to run triple A games at Ultra RT with frame gen and DLSS at 120+ FPS 1440p and competitive games with no DLSS goes crazy. I think this is the bare minimum anyone should buy, it bottlenecks far less than older CPUs.

But outside of that I pretty much just use and mess around with desktop-based hardware. Thank you for dropping a comment though!

    friend, good morning, how are you? I recently picked up a Lenovo 920s at auction. It was very cheap and came equipped with a motherboard and processor identical to the one in the video. it's an umla q370 and an i7 8700. My intention is to make a pc - console to use in the living room, I want to play some games and also do retro emulation. But, tell me, what do you think of the chipset and bios of this system? I'm using an arc a380 lowprofile (meets the requirements of my psu and case size), but unfortunately the a380 is not working fully because the bios does not offer rebar. Another thing I didn't like is that I can't do undervolting. What did you do about these things? Big hug from a fellow Brazilian enthusiast!

      Second Linux exists and gets even better including the fact that Valve is improving Proton. I have an old laptop from 2012 that can do most basic computer tasks with 8GB of RAM thanks to it.
      Third Win12 is going to be subscription based on the rumors so far. I wonder how this is going to turn out.

I just purchased an I5 -8400 but was told it won't work in it? If the LGA 1151 is different for newer processors, then WTF aren't they called LGA 1152's? I appreciate these videos, they're helpful and helping me learn things, thank.

    • @LowcastleTech
      @LowcastleTech  Před 9 měsíci +1

      Glad you are liking the videos, thank you! It is a bit confusing at first, but unfortunately you won't be able to run 8th gen on that board. It is the correct socket type, but compatibility of a CPU depends on other things like the chipset and what generation of processor it is capable of running. I agree it would be helpful if they had different names that factored that kind of thing in. It might help to think of the socket type as a size rather than an overall capability. In general, and just for future reference, when doing CPU upgrades you can usually find specs pages from the manufacturer of the computer or motherboard. If you just google, in your case for example, "Dell 3620 specs" or "Dell 3620 compatible CPU" and then look for results from the manufacturers website, you can typically find compatibility info. That way you should be able to find both the socket type and what generation of CPU is compatible. This can also help with selecting the correct type of RAM and all that kind of stuff. Anyway, I hope this info helps, and thank you for watching 🙂

    8700 was the top dog for its time with a 1080 you have a top tier gamer from 2017 or so. would be just fine in modern games. What I see ids a budget mid tear machine there so stop insulting it.

    Great video as always. Maybe chair-desk get replaced by a desk-desk soon. I have a Dell XE3 with the i7-8700, the additional cores make a difference for me for the VM Ware environments I run. Seems most tech runs on a 5 year cycle and seems most of the i7-8700 systems are appearing on the various ebay type sites now.

      I appreciate that, thank you for watching! I'm definitely seeing more and more of them as well. They have just been hanging right on the verge of the price dropping for so long now. Hopefully it won't be too much longer before they're in that ultra budget arena that I thrive on 😄. But hard to say.
