Elektron Digitakt: Monster Mono-synth?!

- The Elektron Digitakt is a wonderful sampler, sequencer, groovebox... thing! But what if I told you that it's also a monster mono-synth? The rantings of a mad-man? Well maybe! But when you consider that each of its eight sampler tracks can be set up to act as a highly configurable oscillator by looping short, single-cycle wave-forms, the prospect of an 8 oscillator mono-synth starts to sound somewhat appealing!
In this video I take a look at setting up the Digitakt to act like a mono-synth and walk through building an 8-oscillator mono-synth patch from scratch.

It's amazing how even though I'm aware of what the Digitakt offers, I can't actually fathom all the possibilities until I see someone else playing with it, and then it's like a door unlocking in my mind.
It's DEEP. Elektron stuff always operates well at the edges.
“Select all” in the right menu is the shortcut you’re looking for
Yup. I realised that during editing. I'm an idiot.
You’re the Wizard of Osc! More ‘evil’ transformations please!
"The Wizard of Osc"!! I'm stealing that! Thanks for watching, and you can always count on my channel to contain "mis-uses" of gear!
You could resample your finished tone into a single tracked and keep layering! also who in their right mind would dislike this video?
There's no stopping us. Sound design Inception!
@@OscillatorSink It's just one guy layering 5 dislikes
They are just jealous and unable to oscillate properly
accidantally patched into the inverted output and one-shot triggered thumbshape with negative polarity. bad things happen quick when voltage controlling your social media profiles.
you couldnt do that because it wouldnt loop correctly
You can load all samples in a folder (well the first 128 samples ...)in a single step by choosing ''select all'' and then ''load to proj''
had my digitakt for years and i love still learning new stuff! thank you
Oh my goodness! This is just what I was looking for😮. I am the lucky owner of an ARP 2600 and I love the subtractive approach you are using on this digital machine! I has being comparing the sound of the three oscillators in my analog machine, and I most say is impressive, absolutely impressive what you are achieving in this little digital Pandora box!
Just got my DT a week ago and I’m blown away😂. It’s just so incredible to live in this moment of musical technological experimentation. I am embracing all the new technologies as much as the old. The DT gave me the opportunity of explore a new approach to Music making and I can just feel gratitude for people like you, bringing this information available. Thanks man❤
Thank you! The digitakt is such a creative instrument with so much to discover. I've done quite a few videos about it (and its sibling the Digitone). If you want to see a very different side of it, the technique I demonstrate in this video might give you some ideas:

Very nice!!
Thank you friend!
you consistently make some of the best learning content on youtube -- thank you for deep dives like this one!!
Fan-freaking-tastic! Just ordered my Digitakt yesterday and can’t wait to try this out.
Have fun with your Digitakt, it's an amazing instrument! If you are looking for other digitakt tricks to try out, then there are a good few on the channel.
well done.. wasnt expecting a sine wave becoming THIS massive...
The end result is lovely, thanks for taking us on the journey.
Any time! Hopefully you can join me on another soon!
It is amazing how I can begin my Digitakt journey in August 2021 and find such great content ready to go. Great job Oscillator Sink!
Thank you, and I hope you enjoy your Digitakt!
Yeah. I finally got one over this last summer. Along with getting the 1.5 update out of the box, the biggest benefit has been coming to CZcams and basically finding courses on how to utilize The Digitakt.
This is completely out of this world. Incredible idea. Thank you so much for sharing.
And thank you for watching!
Yup. I am shocked at the Digitakt and Digitone how I almost weekly learn something new on my own or folks like you! Great job
This clearly shows that knowledge is power..... there may always be workarounds as long as you know how to do it! Very impressive video! :-D
Nice one! Can't stop my love for this machine ;)
Sehr schön! Gut erklärt, wie immer sehr verständlich! :)
Well done, huge sound. Thanks for sharing
And thanks for watching!
Just absolutely monstrous sounds sir! I am so floored by your work in this demonstration. You have opened another portal into this machine. Much thanks for the work that you give freely.🌟
Thank you for checking it out! Certainly motivates me to make more videos!
That's super impressive.. giving me all kinds of ideas, your stuff on the digitakt is great!
Thank you! No go forth and explore those ideas!
love the DT, an absolute monster of an instrument.
That is SO clever. Never thought of using it in such a way. The DT is such a beast of box- Great for sound design. Awesome video!
Thank you! So stoked you learnt something new about this awesome box!
Wow! That was really helpful! I've had the digitakt for several months now and that never occurred to me. This opens up a whole domain of applications for the digitakt. Thanks a lot!
Have fun exploring!
Amazing you make the Digitakt come alive, thanks for sharing my friend. 👌
Thanks for watching!
You gave me another perspective about this machine!!! Thanks so much
It's a super instrument!
You had far too much fun making that! That delay and reverb at the end sounded like you could go make a cup of tea and come back and it would still be going. You've given me some great ideas for new sounds. Thanks!
I really did. I actually tried yo find out how long it would last, but got bored waiting! Huge dark verbs and delays for days 😍😍😍
@@OscillatorSink Nigel Tufnel would be proud..
I've seen the polyphonic DT demos and loved them, but I honestly didn't really stop to consider how wild a monosynth it could make. Well done!
Cheers, and yup - 8 oscillators is pretty bonkers!
Great video, just bought my second Digitakt this has given me a few great ideas of what to do with it, love the cross fading part, never thought of that, thanks
Have fun with it!
Deep, dark and absolutely beautiful... Reverb on it is perfect from my point of view :-) Very nice job...
Epic, when ever you think you dived in deep there is more ....amazing thanks !!
It's a deep instrument for sure
Really great informative video, thanks!
Thanks a lot! I had never thought about this great possibility! Endless possibilities out there. Great tips. Cheers
Now go and try it out! Have fun!
Wow. This was amazing.
You are a genius!! I've reopened my Digitakt for myself))
This was really useful. Thank you, brother.
Great video man. Digitakt has become the focal point of my studio. It’s a great bit of kit that has so many ways it can be used. Thanks for this new idea! You have a new sub to go with your reverb :)
Thank you! Welcome to the channel!
Great Video - delivered some Inspiration for sure
This is like the Tardis, small on the outside super massive on the inside. You are my new doctor.
Wibbly-wobbly filtery-wiltery
Great! This is it! Very inspiring!
U are a genius!!!! Thank you so much, please keep posting Digitakt videos!!!
There are quite a few in the channel to go back over 😊
I’ve seen all of them already, one of those two times 😂
Amazing ! Thanks for all the insight.... really good tutorial...
Thanks for checking it out!
Genius. Simple idea taken to its logical extreme. More of this kind of thing
Yessir!
wow man! awesome! thank you so much for your time creating this really useful tutorials!
And thank you so much for watching!
Love this SO much! Additional props for “always in C minor!” And of course you can NEVER have enough delay and reverb. 👍👍👍
Haha, the funny thing is I can't even use the keyboard as an excuse here because the Keystep runs F-F. It's just always C minor. No matter what.
Dude I feel ya...my 2,600 video clips on Instagram are all in C damn minor. 😂
The heart wants what the heart wants.
C Minor: Key of Champions.
Uhh, how is that C minor? All the white keys are C major(/A minor). All the white keys (based around F) is F lydian.
All the black keys (C# pentatonic) FTW!
(#lightheartedhumour) ;)
Woaaahh, that's super cool man!
This is really great. Both for using this thing as a learning and experimenting with basic synthesis tool, but also for those of us who are not that into the beat making side of this box.
That's the great thing with the Digitakt - it's happy to work on lots of different ways!
That was incredibly awesome! Thank you!
You're incredibly awesome!
Damn, i'm so glad i bought this machine. such a powerfully varied little machine for a relatively low price. thanks for another good tute OS.
It's killer isn't it? Thanks for watching!
cannot wait to build an 8 operator patch wow that one sounds amazing!!!!!!!
I was just thinking how cool if one track could modulate the parameters of another. Completely ridiculous I know. You could make crazy FM stuff, using different samples for ratios and have a ratio control just like the digitone. Here I am in dreamland.
Oh wow, that's an amazing tutorial. Thank you very much!
You're very welcome!
Excellent!!!! Thanks for sharing ✌🏼
And thank you for watching!
This was fantastic! Thank you so much for sharing. 🤓🤘🏼🤓
😎
I am getting a digitakt in the next few weeks and was wondering about this very topic. Using the waveforms together. And watching how you did it makes me wonder about other forms of modulation. Using specific types of WAV files. For example using a waveform sample that would create an FM modulation to your signal on one of the other channels. Thanks so much for this video. Using it in this way demonstrates how creative this device can be (ie as much as your willing to allow yourself to be with it).
Interesting I don’t usually use the resample feature but I’ve had a brain wave layering all Those 8 tracks into a single sound and then resampling and saving as a patch that’s your baseline for the drums pads and vocals. I can’t wait to experiment with this feature and I’ve plenty of saws and squares. Nice review man 👍🏻
Sweet. Very nice!
Great job! Looks like the Digitakt is a great machine with some hidden features.
I'm certainly having a lot of fun with it!
Not silly at all! Just got the digitakt 2 days ago and I am already into single cycle waveforms so I'm definitely going to make a lot of doomsday analog patches! Thank you for sharing mate! 👍🏻
absolute manic level stuff here. GOOD JOB
Yesssss
@@OscillatorSink meant to say MANIAC, but either way for sure YESSS
God I love the Digitakt so much! Thanks for this 🤙
It's a wonderful instrument!
Absolutely brilliant! Ty
Thanks!
Dark magic. I like it.
Ha! Awesome 8 oscillator sound design. Made me 😊
Sometimes you just need to go really over the top!
Quite interesting! Thanks for the information. 👍
Thank you for checking it out!
Awesome tip ! Thank you
Thanks for watching, I'm glad you enjoyed it!
Interesting stuff...still pining for the TAKT..one day..
I did this on my blackbox and it worked great, with a bit less sound design options. Really cool trick
Thanks! The blackbox looks like a great bit of kit.
Flippin' Brilliant!
Cheers friend!
Amazing, you mad man, I LOVE IT!
I do my best! Thanks for watching!
Thanks Osci!
You're more than welcome inky!
Super cool sound and video. Thx man!!!!!!
Thanks for checking it out!
WOW. I am def using this. Been jonesing for an analog four, but this might satiate me for a while
All Elektron gear is a gateway drug for other Elektron gear!
Great idea and execution 😀
Cheers! 👍
Amazing ❤️
:0 @ 1:36... aka the moment I understood what you were doing. So glad I bought this box. Almost endless creativity.
There's a lot to explore. It might overtake the Digitone as the box I love to spend time with the most!
Damn this is sick. I just got my digitakt and was kinda lost on it but this is so cool since I have a keystep already.
The Digitakt is amazing. If you haven't watched Cuckoo's and Red Means Recording's tutorials on it yet, I highly recommend that as a great way to get a grounding in the workflow and sound design concepts. Keep at it, you'll get there!
Great! Didn't know I had an 8 voice beast of a mono synth
Surprise!
Lovely!
Yup! I was doing just that trying to tweak the sound for the little jam under the intro.
Huge thanks for that!
Thanks for checking it out!
awesome...great way to learn how to create and shape sounds on any machine. in a way you transformed a great sampler into a dreadbox/polyend medusa, wich is a great synth!
Yeah - although I also quite fancy one of those too...
Wow, that thing is really brilliant! I promised myself not to buy more gear but it's really hard to resist...
Epic. Flat out epic
Thats great!
22:11 Yeah! (My thoughts exactly.)
This was great ,, and sounded amazing :-)
Cheers! Thanks for checking it out!
Great Tips. Cheers.
Thanks for checking it out!
Was really interesting !
Great! I'm really glad you enjoyed it!
Cool patch. The DT is a sound design beast. Thx
Cheers!
what do you plan for your next video?@@OscillatorSink
On the Digitakt? Not totally sure yet (and the Digitone might get some love first), more generally? I have something new on my desk at the moment that I'll be having a jam with...
Sounds HUGE, even with just the three oscillators!
You could happily do 3 (ish) layered mono synths and still have a track or two left over for drums. You could even make some of them duophonic in the sequencer. Exciting times!
Wonderful video! Subbed. Can't wait to try this out on mine...
And you don't need to lower the volume for each of the tracks to mute them...
Press FUNCTION and Bank and go to the purple coloured mute mode and you can mute sounds that way.
Oh, does that mute the actual sounds rather than the sequencer? I thought all mutes work the same way, but that the different modes are 'this pattern only' or global mutes? I'll have to check.
very nice trick
excelente bro
Awesome! Enough reason for Elektron te make a Monster mono synth based on what you showed here! Nothing analog, justi digital and an elektron sequencer Multiple osc's with waveform to choose from, multimode filters + a global filter, combined with excellent onboard fx, if the price is right it would be an insta buy.
Anyways, you nailed this one!
The model:mono maybe?
Loved the video - really useful guide and a lot of neat tricks in there. I particularly enjoyed the start phase LFO wavetable trick. I suppose that with a longer sample of a complete wavetable you could also do a “Monster Mono Wavetable” synth with some LFOs de tuning and others adjusting wave table start points?
You certainly could, and I look forward to seeing your video on the matter!
I never really understand those thumbs down with vide's like this.... Just don't watch it... This is amazing!! Thanks for the inspiration!
Thumbs down count as engagement, so ultimately, they help even if it doesn't feel like the nicest kind of help! I'm glad you enjoyed the video though!
@@OscillatorSink Thumb down seems so negative. There’s nothing negative about vids like these. Thumbs up ;-).
Great idea, going to try that myself!
Yesss, have fun with it!
@@OscillatorSink As of late the Digitakt didn't get much attention (DrumBrute Impact).
But I need to get deeper into Digitakt, thanks for the video. Your vid put the Digitakt on my radar again.
I have subbed, looks like I can learn a thing or two here.
Welcome to the channel, friend!
Thanks Mike for putting me onto this video! Awesome idea Osc Sink!
Nice to see you here Enrique! Glad you enjoyed the video!
Great thanks!
YES, super cool!! Thanks for this awesome in-depth example. Now do a polyphonic one! :D

OK going to need one of those fancy rk-002 things you two like...
@@OscillatorSink Looks like it, yeah :)
