  • Watch NYS&W's UT-1 on a rare Saturday run as it switches Utica, NY area customers on May 25, 2019. The video opens with No. 3040 at the new South Utica "run-around." Next, UT-1 is on the former Utica Branch of the NY Ontario & Western in New Hartford. Views of No. 3040 on the former West Shore's New York Mills spur are also included.
We end with views of the freight heading down Utica's Schuyler Street.

run around the steel for DI. Set 3 boxes and pull 3 from recycler in new Hartford, Swap a covered hopper of pellets (loads in empties out) at Fountain Head on the way to DI in the Mills. Pull an empty from McCrath and move it to the north end for the trip back to the yard. 3040 is a fixture in town.

(Put your hand on your head)
Put your foot in the air
(Put your foot in the air)
Then you hop around the room
      In your underwear
Ain't never been nothin' quite like this
Come on baby it's the Utica Switch..."

Beautiful old engine and street running what more can you ask for. Oh ya I guess a bunch of old jointed rail that's pretty shaky looking.

I am really enjoying all your videos. I have a quick question; do the crews ever use the run-around just north of Clinton Street on the New York Mills spur? Boy, the conductor really gets a workout on this spur.

It is used all the time, especially to re-position cars for Fountainhead.

@@railroadingrambler218 Cool. Thanks for the info. I wish I understood operations better. I had assumed there was a problem with the run-around since they do such a long shove for DI Highway. Thanks again!

God forbid the owners should upgrade or replace the twisted rails and 150 yr-old ties on this line...😠

Hey Silly Wabbit, those aren't ties. They are splinters of wood all pointing in the same direction...
(kinda like that joke about helicopters are just 250,000 pieces all flying in the same direction)
