Addie: "this seems impossible" (slowly realizes that's the title of the movie) 😂😂
That was the highlight of this one :)
Seeing the pinnacle of spy tech in this movie really puts in perspective how much technology has advanced since then.
Retaining that iconic title sequence from the old TV show was sublime and Danny Elfman’s arrangement of the old theme is so satisfying.
Peter Graves was the Original "Mr. Phelps" and was asked to reprise his role for the movie, but declined when he read that he was the villian. He could never see his character as doing that.
And this was a weekly TV series!
As a 53 year old👴🏾I'm old enough to have seen the tv shows as reruns as a kid and loving Garrett Morris as an actor and I remember being butt hurt too initially when they turned the Phelps character evil for the 1st film but Tom eventually won me over throughout the years.👏🏾👍🏾
Personally, I would have liked to have seen him in some sort of cameo role.
@@steveray9655 👍🏾👏🏾AGREED!
Addie, the original tv show from the late 60's thru the early 70's and its iconic theme song that the movie series is based on always started each episode the same way, "Your mission, should choose to accept it, is to (fill in mission goal). This tape will self-destruct in 5 seconds".
This movie made me so angry that I didn't watch another one until Ghost Protocol came out. Making Mr. Phelps the bad guy was absolutely a criminal act. Thank goodness they didn't do that with any other hit TV series.
Your mission, you should choose to accept, to continuing this great franchise. Good luck, Addie.
Now that you've seen this classic Cruise film, one of his comedies, "Knight and Day," will make more sense.
Knight and Day was fantastic fun!
Hey, Addie! This franchise is based on the 1960s TV SERIES and its 1980s revival both starring Peter Graves.
Both runs of the series were more about long cons by a small team of operatives such as the opening set piece and relied on the gimmick of wearing disguises and utilizing cool spy gadgets. The movies retain those elements but are more about white-knuckle stunts performed by Cruise himself!
The LALO SCHIFRIN score is one of TV's most iconic themes and never fails to set the electrifying pace!
What many people don't realize is that JON VOIGHT is playing JIM PHELPS, the team leader of the TV series played by PETER GRAVES in the '60s original and '80s reboot! That means the hero of the series turns into the villain of the movie! Graves was actually approached for a cameo but he didn't like the twist about his signature character and declined to participate.
Phelps kills his young wife because his ego couldn't tolerate her being attracted to his young protege. He wanted absolute loyalty and commitment from her which she betrayed by coming to Ethan's defense. Having her work in close proximity to a guy like Ethan, Phelps' September-May relationship was doomed from the get-go! Lol. The hot youngsters' mutual attraction was evident in the first scene!
The series is mostly consistently excellent and is one of the best action franchises ever made!
The first three films are products of their directors bearing their undeniable signatures. This was every inch a BRIAN DEPALMA film with POV shots, flashback sequences and low-angle vantage points.
DePalma was most definitely inspired by JULES DASSIN's heist films for the famous Langley caper scene. In both 1955's "RIFIFI" and 1964's "TOPKAPI", the intricate thefts are plotted out for the audience, executed in SCORELESS SILENCE, initiated from a ceiling ingress and nearly foiled with a slip.
The second film is every inch a JOHN WOO movie and the third film is every inch a J.J. ABRAMS movie.
I grew up watching the original but had no idea there was an '80s revival.
I have to give kudos to the recently deceased Robert Towne, who co-wrote this film's script. It's a really smart and well-written story, a little hard to follow at first, but full of loads of little clues hinting towards the big twists which make it really rewarding to watch multiple times. Plus, it's got some of the best dialogue in the entire series - there has yet to be another line in this series that goes as hard as "Kittridge, you've never seen me 'very upset'."
Glad to see you enjoyed this Addie, you're in for a treat with the rest of the series too. The next one is definitely a big step down, but it's still quite a lot of fun. And the rest of the series is consistently top-notch action cinema, this truly is one of, if not the best action film series currently running
Follow the entire saga Addie, you will enjoy it a lot and yes, each one has its charm.
One of the best movie series ever, it DOES get better and better
Except the next one, it's kind of a turd.
@@abeclark524The series didn’t reach peak idiocy until Ghost Protocol.
@@toddjones1480 Nah. #2 was the worst.
@@toddjones1480Way to have the absolute worst take 😂
@@te1013 We’re talking about a movie where Tom Cruise freefalls in a car 140m into solid concrete and runs away from that. No one could survive the forces that would be involved there.
So glad you're jumping into this series, Addie. Every one of these movies is really good. Tom Cruise is a master entertainer, that's for sure!
20:00 Ethan was telling Jim what he wanted to hear while he was going over and piecing together what really happened in his head.
The music is composed by Lalo Schifrin. Known for themes such as Mission Impossible, Rush Hour, Enter The Dragon, Dirty Harry, etc. Very well known themes for a very underappreciated composer.
I get why this one hasn't aged the best, but seeing it in a packed theater was amazing. You could feel the entire theater hold its breath during the vault scene. The cheers when the theme kicks in. The gasps for that final train sequence. This was an absolute smash hit when it came out.
I think it's actually lasted pretty well personally, it's the most "espionagey" feeling to me because it doesn't _totally_ hold our hands, we have to do a bit of work.
Not top of the heap but _definitely_ not my least favourite of the series either.
I think they made to many of these. If they only made Mission Impossible 1, then it would be a classic today, but now its just a mediocre action movie
@@SomeinsanegenuisDisagree. I think this one is actually one of the more well-regarded of the series. If anything, 2 is more the generic action movie of the franchise. There’s a reason the CIA sequence is iconic.
@@te1013 part 2 isn't generic, it's John Woo style. The 4th and later movies are generic as they are the same movie with the furniture rearranged.
@@reptomicus Part 2 is the epitome of style over substance. At that point in time, John Woo had run his course through Hollywood. Windtalkers was his last good “Hollywood” movie.
The continuity keeping ontop of technology is a delight for spy movies that gives James Bond a run for his money, also the behind the scenes for the franchise is wild!
Just to be clear: This is directed by Brian de Palma. That's probably why it sometimes feels more like a Bond movie or a spy thriller from the 1970s. You could think of it as Tim Burton's "Batman" compared to Joel Schumacher's later entries... It's also probably why it feels a little more grounded in reality than the rest of the franchise (the Eurostar tunnel sequence obviously excluded) ... Bonus trivia: The title sequence is literally the entire movie cut down to short 'blink-and-you'll miss-them' fast cuts. Bonus trivia 2: When Max asks Ethan "Who are you, and what are you doing here?" it's a nod to the caterpillar scene in Lewis Carrol's "Alice in Wonderland".
A little history. The franchise originated as a TV show in 1966 and lasted for seven seasons. I can still remember scenes from some of the episodes. Addie, I'm sure you are going to enjoy watching the movie franchise, enjoy the journey.
The original TV series had Jim Phelps as the main character, so no one expected him to be the bad guy in the movie
Addie: your mission, should you choose to accept it…
Everything after the 4th movie is an incredible adventure and improbable series of events to witness.
Yes 4,5,6 are incredible!! I don't know why 7 is good but It feels not as exciting and I didn't like its part one. I didn't like the over use of CG ironing out the leads old age. But I will be there for Part 2.
@@reesebn38 No love for the 3rd movie? That's when things really kickoff in this franchise, Philip Seymour Hoffman as the villain was the best part of that movie. Dead Reckoning part 1 really sucked though but it doesn't help that it came out after Fallout which was a masterpiece at least in my eyes it is. I just hope DR part 2 isn't a total let down like part 1.
@@ScottKudo I really like the 3rd and yes that is where is gets good. I look at it as the first movie in the series.
The best part about Mission Impossible is that nearly every movie gets better - enjoy the ride!
"Those poor fish, they did not deserve that!" And that sweet and wholesome reaction is what I'm here for.
Ever watch a war movie with a chick. They all hate seeing horses die.
There was a TV series before this and the main character wasn't Ethan Hunt, but Jim. His death and then eventual betrayal was a huge surprise for the people who watched the old Mission Impossible show, so that twist hit even harder. That being said, this is a crazy good movie franchise. I think the second one is probably my least favorite, but it's still fun, and the upward trajectory of these films is a sight to behold.
I AM SO RIDICULOUSLY EXCITED FOR YOU TO WATCH THESE!!!
Fun fact ! The theme song for Mission impossible is the morse code for mission impossible! 😁
My very favorite of these infiltration/heist movies is definitely "Sneakers".
Truly the biggest moviestar ever. Tom Cruise love his filmography❤
This is a great series to watch and follow "Mission Impossible" lots of action and intrigue they only get better. Excellent reaction.
This whole series only gets better with each movie.
I Luv this series so I hope you continue watching the IMF-Mission Impossible movies! They have such great action and cool bad guy plots! The casting is awesome and I look forward to watching all the MI series with you Addie! Thanks for sharing Addie ❤️💛
Nice Addie. I was backpacking through Europe in 95, post University grad, and was in Prague while they were shooting this. Couldn't wait to get back to see it. I love this one more than the rest, as it's truly a spy/noir flick. From 3 on, they're more of an action genre, and definitely amazingly great, but different in mood. All in all though, a fantastic series.
30 years? I feel attacked 😮🤯🫨
Welcome to the IMF. Your mission, should you choose to accept it, is to enjoy the best spy action franchise of all time!
Can't wait to watch you experience the masterpiece that is MI: Fallout
After James Bond, you mean...
@@SwordmasterKane James Bond is insanely inconsistent, and the timeline makes no sense whatsoever. There's been 7 actors so far, each bringing something new, Ethan has carried the franchise on his back and is still the same guy, with more or less the same team behind him. Some of the Bond films have aged poorly.
For Craig, Casino Royale and Skyfall are amazing, Spectre & QoS are trash, could go on but...
Bourne gives em a run for it's money, but since I love both, it's like trying to pick a favorite child.
Hey! I love Bond, Hunt, and Bourne! They all have different styles and all are entertaining and great in their own way. Can’t we all just get along!
PS. MI:Fallout is a masterpiece!
Let the Mission: Impossible mission begin. See you soon for Mission: Impossible 2 (2000). BTW, nice cold opening.
Speaking of Brian De Palma, who directed this movie, I also suggest Carrie (1976, for Halloween), Scarface (1983), The Untouchables (1987), Casualties of War (1989), Raising Cain (1992, also for Halloween), Carlito's Way (1993), Snake Eyes (1998, THIS IS NOT A SNAKE MOVIE), Mission to Mars (2000) and The Black Dahlia (2006). #MoreBrianDePalmaForAddieCounts
This will be awesome, you've chosen a fantastic franchise, they just keep getting better and more edge of your seat after this. Have fun!
The bones of this movie I think have aged really well for a spy movie. I'll agree that the gadgets/tech and some of the special effects feel dated. But the directing and the acting really make this movie iconic.
This is still my favorite of the franchise.
Movies 4-7 are 4 of the best action movies ever made. 28 years... this franchise has been going for 28 years, and the quality has improved not declined. Pretty crazy.
Yes, the movies has been coming out for thirty years, but the franchise is even older because it was originally a TV-show!
“We are starting Mission Impossible…” poses like 007. 😂
I haven't watched this reaction yet, but I'm begging you to please continue with the series. After the second one, the series reinvents itself, and continues to evolve. Too many reactors just do the first Mission Impossible, then just forget the rest.
All the Movies are good and yes Luther is in every Movie
omg my friends seamlessly go into Ethan Hunt from this about anything "i can't find my earbud case MY EARBUDS! ARE IN, THE OPEN!"
the noc list is an all time macguffin, i still get anxious about it.
I have to mention that was a unusual mouse, usually it will ran off if they see a person not go towards them
3:40 “Oh, you’re good.” Oh, just wait 😅
0:26 It is quite amazing that they managed to keep this film series going with the same lead actor since 1996, I never actually thought about that before. But the aspect that makes these films so good is not really Tom Cruise, although he is a big factor, it's the writing that's fantastic! Great characters, great villains, great plot progression, incredible stuns. Christopher McQuarrie has been the writer of the films since the fifth one. He also wrote The Usual Suspects (1995) and Edge of Tomorrow (2014).
I grew up watching the original TV series, some of it in first run. I even closely followed the late 1980s TV continuation version which had Jim Phelps returning to lead a new team. This movie was almost perfect. It definitely caught the spirit of the TV show, and went high-octane with it. But a lot of us original viewers were upset at making Jim the villain. The TV character was above reproach and should have remained that way. I remember reading that the actor who was the original team gadget guy stormed out of the theater mid-showing when he realized they'd compromised Mr. Phelps. Had they used another name, maybe even Dan Briggs, who was the first season team lead who with less known about him might have been corruptible, this movie would have been perfect. Still, most everyone had a lot of fun, and first night in the theater was a riot of happy viewers.
The first half of the film was shot in Prague, in Czech Republic ☺
"No, it's _in_ the tunnel!" Peak Schneider.
I think the only reason it ages weirdly is cause the franchise totally went another direction. It’s my fave
The fact that Addie was DEFINITELY a secret agent in another life is not lost on us 😎😎😎
Hello Addie! Your mission, should you choose to accept it, is to watch the entire "Mission: Impossible" franchise. This is a really good action serie with a great actor. 😊
Good luck, Addie! This comment will (not) self-destruct in 5 seconds 😆
*PLEASE* watch *Arlington Road* starring *Jeff Bridges* and *Tim Robbins,* also *Nothing To Lose* starring *Tim Robbins* and *Martin Lawrence.*
When this came out in the theaters it was amazing, this is the only movie I went back and watched it a 2nd time that first day.
When you get time you should check out the TV series that led to the films. The television show began in 1966-1973 and restarted in 1988 for 2 seasons. There are NO bad episodes in either line.
Glad to see you react with great interest.
As we say in Texas; y'all be safe
This is the only Mission Impossible film where no guns where ever used during the story.
I believe Cruise (or possibly his production company?) got the rights to Mission Impossible as part of making these, which explains his tenure in the series. And yeah, he's used it to help his bucketlist on stunts
This is a good series. Glad you liked it.
Loved the 'Foghorn' reference.
This was a spring board from the original popular long running tv series.
The smartest and best movie in the franchise. The Mission Impossible movies are based on a 60's tv show that had a sequel series in the 80's. This movie is the most loyal to the tv series (both 60 and 80) compared to the other movies. Fyi the original actor who plays Jim Phelps Peter Graves Rip refuse to play in this movie because what happen in this movie that is why Jon Voight plays in this movie. You should also see Jack Reacher and Sneakers.
The producers approached the original TV show Phelps actor, Robert Graves, to reprise the role for the movie but he told them to shove it when they informed him his hero character was going to turn traitor for money. He wanted no part in sullying the role he originated.
These movies only get twistier and turnier! 😉
8:24 "Job 3.14" is a reference to The Bible? Only a super genius could break that code!
Yes, 30 years of these movies. They're all highly enjoyable except the last one.
Actually, nearly 60 years if you include the TV series, starring Peter Graves of "Airplane" fame as Jim Phelps.
Fun fact - The theme song, written by Lalo Schifrin for the 60's series, has an odd 5/4 time signature. The iconic cadence spells out "MI" in Morse code.
I've never heard anyone calling Mission Impossible cheesy. In that case, get ready for the rest as this is the least cheesy of the series.
The LEAST cheesy? Did you forget about MI:2 😂
@@nitrokid That one is the most cheesy
Jim was a very popular character in the TV show, so his turning was unpopular with some.
7:48 Haha, she’s ‘bout it! 😄
You're going to love this series. And, you're in luck, Luthor will be back
Love this series, lets go!
the later movies are great action movies, but this one really captured the MI vibe from the original show.
It gets better by far.... you'll love it!
“Fun” is an interesting way to look at it 🤔 😄
Kittridge, you've never seen me "very upset".😂
I can't remember which one it is, but there is one installment of this franchise that is reasonably okay.
Wonderful reaction, Addie. I look forward to seeing you react to the rest of them. They get intense.
I can’t wait to see all your MI videos. They are fantastic. And your videos are always top notch ❤
1 is a fun, good start
2 is the weakest and is rather over-the-top, but still fun
3 is where it starts to get serious and sees a step up in quality
4 is where they really hit their stride. Several people's favorite.
5 and 6 are generally considered the best. Absolutely terrific
7 is an excellent addition. Not as strong as 5 or 6, but still a wild ride that is thoroughly enjoyable
It is time! 🤩
"Put your sweat back in your body"
Me to myself whenever I talk to a woman.
5:01 Man, when you know what happens, that makes this part so much darker 😬
Mission briefing, back when people could smoke on an aircraft. Now that's (thankfully) impossible!
If you thought this one was cheesy just wait until MI2, it’s borderline ridiculous, but it gets better after that. The best ones start with the fourth installment.
3 has its moments: great villain, that long run thru China...
@@MrSiriusAB Excellent villain, maybe too good. It was a drastic change from the almost cartoonish previous movie, maybe too dark for the series but it’s a good movie, I just think that since part 4 they improved everything, the story, the filming style, the casting choices, the mix of comedy-drama-action, etc.
@@MrSiriusABI'm not a fan of the third at all. I have reasons, but don't want to get into them here for spoilers' sake.
The only thing I liked about 2 was the OST
@@VerryJerry90
Limp Bizkit: you rang?
"This seems impossible." Well, it's not mission improbable...it's mission impossible. Love, love, LOVE your reactions. This one was a bit cheesy because it had to bridge the gap between the long running old tv show and present day. As the next movie is not the best one of the entire series, but it does get increasingly better starting with the 3rd one. I'll be waiting anxiously for your reactions!
I recently got into the Mission Impossible show. It is pretty good.
Hi Addie, great review. My mum and I saw this in cinema when it was released. You really need to watch them all in order. They just get better and better as they go. Hope you enjoy.
I'm no fan of Tom Cruise but I LOVE these movies! looking forward to the rest of the reactions!!!
Are you planning on watching all of these?? They are all amazing honestly!
And this one is fun because you can watch it again and see that there were hints all along at what was going on.
love your reactions this is a great series
Oops..."cheesier"? Brian De Palma directed this first MI film, and he is known for being very stylized with his films (see "Carrie", "The Untouchables", and "Scarface" for examples). He loves a crime-story and he loves a mystery to unravel and such. But that said, I'm glad you liked the film! It was a great start to a great franchise. Now...about the second MI film. John Woo directed it and he is know for is over-the-top action sequences and over-the-top characters. So, MI2 is a little crazy, with the action, but that's OK. You will like it but just realize that from MI3 onward (directed by J.J. Abrams), the films get much, much better! You will be amazed at all the stunts that TC does himself and the plot-lines are really compelling. Great franchise for sure!
25:02 oh lord, wait till you see the next one.
Love your work, Addie. Keep it up! 😊
23:29 Kinda sounds a little like ‘Back to the Future’ there 😃
Huge dropoff from 1->2, and a big dropoff from 6->7, but other than that it's a consistent build up. Fallout is all time top tier
Can’t wait till you see Mission Impossible 3 and onward.
Ghost protocol was the best MI EVER ! ❤❤
Fantastic tv series and movie series. Tom Cruise was made for this role of Ethan Hunt
I saw MI in the theatre. I was excited because I loved the TV show. The Theme Song is the Original TV Theme Song. Funny thing in the 60s and 70s a lot of the tv theme songs became hit songs playing on the radio. I did not like this movie! I didn't like it because the cool part of the TV show was they were a team and everyone did something that would connect to the other and complete the Mission. Plus the show had the brilliant Martin Landau! And more than anything the TV show had Cinnamon Carter(Barbara Bain)one of the coolest fictional female spies of all time.
But I do love these movies staring at number 3. 4, 5, 6 are some of the best action movies ever made! Best scene ever Henry Cavill loading his muscles. Lol
wow this is gonna be a fun reaction series :D
