I'm 59 years old and I've been playing since my early teens. I've always wanted to learn this part but never took the time to try. Thanks to you guys, that's about to change.
Likewise!
Time to really learn the pentatonic scale. Most of us don't really know it all the way around the neck lol
@@granddaddy_funk That's an interesting assumption, that because I never sat down to learn Sir Duke, I don't know the pentatonic scale. lol
@@bassislife-trh Its all pentatonic/blues. It's only a mystery if you can only play it in one position. Sorry if I came across as rude I meant to say this song will teach you how to extend the scale across the whole fretboard.
@@granddaddy_funk I just never sat down to learn this particular song is all. I'm well versed in blues scales.
I've always been around this channel here but man, Ian is such a great addition.
Love his vibe!
Me too, lol ;-)
He actually sucks he’s super fake and annoying
Growing up with no internet, I had to learn this by ear. Took a lot of time to get a bar down. Now you have professional musicians teaching you note for note online for free. What a great time for learning. Keep them low ends groov’n.
I still have to learn by ear. I'm terrible at reading tabs. It's too much maths for me.
You both bring so much joy in learning bass lines, and on top of it inspiring bass lines! Thanks guys
🧡🧡🧡
This is the best bass video I’ve ever scene. Not only my fave bass song, but you guys are so great and funny together. No one ever broke this down like this. Wow..Love it ! Peace..
My first time playing it on a gig (I was 19 or 20) was also a disaster, but since then it's always been an absolute joy to play. Such a killer song and rightly a core part of the repertoire for any working bassist.
I don't many working bassists can play this.
This song and this bass break will always have a special place in my heart because it was the song i played for my prepared piece during my Berklee audition. And now i’m attending class there. It’s great!
As a former Berklee student; and former Air Force musician…. RUN AWAY from Berklee as fast as you can and never look back!
@@CatsNCowswhy?
It's wild to hear these two play the exact same phrases, yet sound so different. If I'm being honest, I prefer Ian's approach. The snap/articulation from playing each note individually - rather than using pull-offs - seems to fit in the pocket better for me. There's a percussiveness to the notes that I really like with his approach.
Breaking it down like this into sort of bite size pieces is great and gave me hope and inspiration. Oh year each piece is a bass line in itself!
Really love how much fun you guys have playing together =) Thanks for the videos.
Having you both in the video nicely shows the different ways to play the same thing and that nothing is wrong if it sounds cool!
guys french player here glad to speak english to be one of your followers, beyond this iconic phenomenal bass line of stevie, just wanted a massive thanks for all your contributions and your passion !!! it is so bloody contagious !
I've been putting this one off but breaking it up in parts helped me nail it pretty quick. Endless thanks for this awesome channel & hosts!
Let’s go! Favorite song of all time!!! 🔥🔥🔥
You guys together are amazing ! Thank you !!
Oddly when I first tried picking this song up it wasn't the bass break that tripped me up, it was that last chorus! The variations definitely get trickier as the song goes on.
One of the nice things about playing this break is the little “yeah!” on the track after the first long phrase. Always makes me feel like Stevie and the band are rooting for me to get it right!
I remember taking me few weeks when I was 21 to learn Sir Duke on bass as my audition for my college fusion band, & it's still one of my all time favorite songs to jam along many years later!
Great choice, and yeah, it's so much fun to jam to!
I remember playing this song in my high school jazz band (I had picked up bass in about Grade 8 and was my main instrument throughout high school, and quickly got the reputation/nickname of "rock star" from a lot of my friends because I was the only guitarist in the band and they knew I played guitar and loved rock music), and while it did definitely take me awhile to get down it's still one of my favourite songs that I've learned and I got to play this back in 2017 when my music teacher took up on our annual Cuba trip (every four years he would take our high school/Senior band to Cuba for a week to play some shows and the last time they had gone some of my friends who had already been playing there went when we had started Grade 9 so I got to experience it once I hit Grade 12 and it was absolutely beautiful), such an absolute bloody jam and it'll always be one of my favourite Stevie songs
The turns played by the horns on the last few notes almost always go unnoticed by bands (obviously the bass doesn't do it in the recording) but it's such a nice little flex whenever I hear people do it!
🧡🧡🧡
I’ve been playing bass since I was 14 and this was one of the first things I attempted, it was just way too cool 😂 I’ve been playing it non stop for the last 5 years and have never been able to get it just right. But you’ve inspired me to keep trying it, enjoying every bar!
Thank you Guys! The best bass teachers in youtube!
So cool to see your different approaches to the same line!
Excellent! Thank You.
Such a great video with your infectious enthusiasm.
Absolutely fantastic!!! Possibly one of my favorite videos you guys have done! Totally unrelated, still waiting for Ian to do a full cover of “Over” 😂
A brilliant breakdown. You both explain it so well, in a really accessible way.
🧡🧡🧡
you are both great tutors, i learned that stuff in 15 minutes thanks to your great guidance! thank you! keep up the good work!
You both look like your having so much fun 😂, one word AWESOME!!!!
You two are a wonderful team, mutual respect and friendship and great tone too! Thanks for the fun!
Brilliant song. I can’t help but play along with the horns on the intro when I’m jamming to this!
Love your stories!
Ben learning things more challenging recently. This was a great one!
Awesome video!
Always thought of it more as a horn break than a bass break, but yeah. It's awesome. My all time favorite song.
Okay, nvm. That point was acknowledged within the first 30 seconds lol
I remember learning this with the vinyl when I was 12 . Absolute monster
Luckily my dad’s old record player went all the way down to 18 on a variable slider so I could get it an entire octave down. Still took me a while
So much fun tho
Watts is a beast
Awesome part for sure, awesome dudes too 😉🙏
The bass playing on that song is a master class on how to make a really good song great.
yall are the goats for doin this :]
I just love Sir Duke. What an epic song!
It's sooooo much fun!!
Hell yeah ! Keep them coming
👍👍👍
I learned this one first on the sax, which actually made it harder to learn on the bass, as it actually isn't the same line.
Similar, but not the same.
i guess the first line written was the sax/trumpet lines,....
Tank you!
The very first lick I ever learned by ear; more than 25 years ago. I still remember where I was when I learned it also.
So fun!
Absolutely!!! so much fun to be had learning and playing this tune!
Sir Duke and Master Blaster are the two bass breaks that make you feel good when you hear it
🧡🧡🧡
Great video! I love the vibe between you! (bass-nerding-deluxe) :)
🧡🧡🧡
I've been practicing this for the last few weeks, so fun! I feel like my timing is off though
Played this in marching band in high school… so much fun ❤
🧡🧡🧡
Sublime....
good video
Used to play this in a band with a full horn section. So much fun.
🔥🔥🔥
I’ve been playing for about a year and a half and have to learn this in two weeks for jazz band, wish my luck
Good luck!
Ian sets off showing what to play at a speed you can relate to. Scott man, you blast through "It's just... (insert the lick played faster than the original!" 🙂
For the longest time I didn’t even know a bass was playing with the horns. I thought it was Stevie on the Rhodes.
Great stuff... I wish I was a bassist ;)
After downloading the workbook I'm like wait isn't this super similar to Take the A-Train? Oh Sir Duke... plays the two songs together at the same time... Stevie Wonder is a genius
Nice 👍
Thanks for the video, amazing breakdown of all the details! Would you be able to do a similar video on Matt Ramseys bass playing from the NPR tiny Desk with Kirk Franklin, it's got some of the most inspired song-serving bass playing I've ever heard. I'd love to hear you both analyse it!
Hi! Your sound is so full, so reach, even with different basses. What's the secret? There is so many bass videos on CZcams and too many with a crappy sound. Please show us/them the light! 😉
Great playing both! i'm new to the game but I really love the sound of that Wal bass, even more than the F.
Anyone can comment on that Wal v/s a EBMM stingray special 5HH?
I bought "Songs in the Key of Life" vinyl like 15 years ago, and I never learned it. I have something to work on this weekend! 🎸🤩Peace!✌
Go to it and have fun!!
I got to learn this iconic break on both bass ánd keys (we couldn't afford a proper brass section 🤣😭👍) for 2 different bands...
Once you've got it, it'll never leave you!
Stevie Wonder is such a deserved legend....
🔥🔥🔥
Naked in the rain by the chili peppers is my pick
Man, I miss that banana bass. What a beauty. EXCELLENT video, guys. Thank you. I'm going to tackle learning this one.
Miss it too!! 🍌💛🍌
SBL, when can we get an AEROPLANE (RHCP) song breakdown!!??? Its what the people want
Awww, it's the ba-nah-nah bass ❤
🍌💛🍌
Scott, the new videos with the banana bass is like salt in the wound 😫
I knowwwwwww!!!!!
One of the finest bits of music from the last century...
💯💯💯
I was just look for how to play this
Hey guys, would you ever consider analysing Trevor Bolder when he was playing bass with Bowie. Amazing, melodic lines with lots of notes, created almost instantaneously by Trevor not David ……he was much underrated, but so good. Take the bass line for ‘Lady Grinning Soul’ for example…..
you should check out stevie wonder's master blaster, that break is grrreeeeat
Great shout!!
got to laugh about the first time Scott played it at a reading gig... feel your pain !!!😁
lol... seriously... a BLOOD BATH! ;-)
@@devinebass Maybe ask us lot "what is the worst you ever messed up at a reading gig.. " should be some funny stories...
💎
Could you please break down Tetsuo Sakurai's solo on Domino Line (Mint Jams album)? Thanks
When is the channel gonna get a punk/hard rock/metal consultant? There are some great bass lines in coheed and cambria music.
After scott gets done saying how important articulation is to match the horns, he does that dead string rake that blows that out of the water. Ian articulates the thing a lot better.
“777” by Silksonic
bass
I no the break down i need to learn the rest of it 😂😂😂😂
Gold on YT, spread out on your face out of bass ore
Scott, did you make sure to match your hate with your bass!
Pour one out for the bunAAAAHHHHna bass 😢
i miss that bass SO much!
@@devinebass I still hate that you gave it away (mostly because I didn’t win) 😢
Bass solo or bass break?? I would consider it a unison line with the horns
Nice job lads. I'm glad you pointed out the portion where Nathan Watts played it up an octave, which is how I've always played it. I learned this back when "Songs in the Key of Life" came out, and I love to play it. I don't think that specific portion of the line should be played in the lower register. It's cooler to play that lick like the original track, up high!
What came first - the bass or the cap?
What strings do you use guys? Great vid as always :)
Both basses have D'addario nickels on them!!
@@devinebass May I ask what gauge too?
The PDF download seems to be broken
I read "Sir Duke" and thought "Do I Do"
I really need y'all to break that one down for me. I could never get it
We might take a look at Do I Do at some point!! Great tune and amazing bass work!!
Great song, great bass line... and it even aint the best song in that album, which is totally KILLER. Contusion, I Wish, Ordinary Pain, Isn't she Lovely, Black Man, As, SUMMER SOFT!!! It's just top 5 alltime any genre shit for me... too darn freakin sublime! Cheers
Stevie's 70's albums run was incredible! I can't think which album is the best, or which song. There are like 5 genius albums released one after another! 🎸🤩Peace!✌
My son just started playing the bass 3 months ago, has had 4 lessons, and is already playing this like a pro 😮 any other suggested songs/ breaks for him to push himself?
If he really wants to push himself, then Stevie's Do I Do is a killer bass line!!
@@devinebass wow that’s very cool thanks
Funk Police joke was gold! lol
🤣🤣🤣
7 days ago how did i miss this 😲 I was doing this one 2 weeks ago or so but i cant manage full speed yet 75% i can tho
Be patient and keep working on it in that case! You'll get there!
I guess, parts im struggling with is 7:19 when you hang with the note on the D string, my fingers climbing from that up to the E string clashes up when i try to do this full speed. Same with the part of the same part on 8:31 my right hand just cant seems to climb up the A string and hit the G and D as it should. And i struggle with the part that goes A-4-4 D-1 A-4 D-2-3-4 E-4 A-4 E-0-2 A-1-2
My favorite part : how to play a "flalabalaeh" rake !
The Banana bass 🍌🍌🍌
RIP Banana bass
🍌💛🍌
watching this makes me realise i'm shifting on my fretboard waaay more than i should be
Way to break it down.
Anyone know what amp Scott is using? The one sat on the Aguilar cab.
Trickfish!
Thank you!@@IanMartinAllison
How do you download the tabs and notation? Can't find it.
This link should take you there: sbl.link/3S8Bnmg
Another secret of this song is its tuning is in 442 instead of 440. Like most of Stevie Wonder's songs.
