  • HOW TO PLANT A FOOD PLOT! THE LESS CONFUSING WAY. planting food plots does not need to be hard. Actually, they are very easy to do. when you follow the basic steps with controlling weeds, soil samples and soil to seed contact you will succeed. No till has a time and place possibly in rocky situations or on a larger scale. For food plotters on smaller plots it may just be easier to disc or till. The choice is yours.

I love seeing the “B Roll” footage of the tiller and not going so slow that you pulverize the soil.
Too many guys go waaaay too slow and pulverize the soil to cause hard pan…

Yes for sure. You don’t need to go real deep or slow. Most times I just like to scratch the top couple inches. That’s all you really need

    Hey Dave ,
Could do a video on how to setup a poly tape electric fence to keep deer out of a food plot.

No access to glyphosate or other stuff without a commercial license here. Would tilling and then discing repeatedly like 2-3 times be good enough to reduce the weed seed bank?

Yes I’ve done that before you’ll still have some weeds but if you time it right and have a clean seed bank at planting and plant something that germinates quick you should be good. You’ll have less weeds if you plant that way for the fall because weeds are going dormant at that time of year.

      @@Whitetailobsessionoutdoors Thank you!
Plan is to seed an annual blend of cover crops/green manure and repeat the process the following year.
It is the first time I try this. Will be very interesting! If you ever plan to travel to Norway for some consulting here in the land of stone age deer management let me know ;-)

What is the so called perfect cec number?

If you get above 10 you’re doing good. 10-15 would be ideal. I’ve brought them up from 3 to 12 in the past. Organic matter from like 2-3 to 10-13
