Another video idea that ties into this series you’re doing, best reptiles for 6*2*2 enclosures. A 180 gallon (6*2*2) enclosure is basically the largest commercially available enclosure, it’s the largest you can find before you need something custom built, so it would be cool to see some reptiles that will fit into that enclosure. I’d say male boa constrictors (both BCIs and BCCs, BCCs don’t get significantly bigger than BCIs), Ackie Monitor Lizards, Blood Pythons, Timor Monitor Lizards, and Indigo Snakes would make great choices.

Love seeing a viper gecko on a list finally! I feel like they have a lot of similar appeal to the elegant/sand-fingered geckos. I have three, so they're in a slightly larger setup, but they cohabit really well and are adorable. Though you have to be very careful with the little guys since they're small and quick, they can also be nice handle because, despite being a terrestrial gecko, they still have toe pads and can hold onto you better than a leopard gecko.

Video idea: These big snakes can be your first snake.
When it comes to “starter snakes”, people will say that, say, corn snakes or milk snakes are great beginners. However, a lot of people get into snakes because they don’t want something as small as a Hognose snake or even a Corn Snake, they want a big boy.
Personally, I’d say Woma Pythons, Borneo Short Tail Pythons, Ball Pythons, BCI (and to an extent BCC) Boa Constrictors, and Dumerils Boas are great first snakes if a bigger snake is something that you want. All of these snakes are very hardy and won’t just die on you if you make a mistake (unlike something like a rainbow boa), they’re big but not so big they can kill you (like a Burmese or Reticulated Python), and they’re all very docile and don’t need experience to tame down (like a Blood Python or Yellow Anaconda). What do you think?

    • @metaknight115
      @metaknight115 Před 9 měsíci +8

@@jjhill001They're not that large, they'll get pretty long, but they'll stay skinny and may never have to move on from mice to rats.
I define snake size by what they eat. For example, you can have a blue beauty snake, which is going to get really long, 6 or 7, maybe even 8 or 9 feet long. However, it's going to stay 2-2.5-inches wide and will eat small to medium rats. Meanwhile, Borneo Short Tail Pythons will stay 4-ish feet long, but are going to get REALLY girthy, like as girthy as a large female Boa. They're going to eat extra large rats.
      Small-medium mice=tiny snakes
      Full grown mice= small snakes
      Small-medium rats=medium snakes
      Full grown rats=large snakes
      Rabbits or larger=Giant snakes.

I wish I could find a captive bred smooth green snake, I'd have one like yesterday. I am a person who lives in a small space so my collection is mostly lil guys who can do well in smaller enclosures. I've been breeding five lined skinks for 10 years now. I breed mine in a 100 gallon heavily planted Rubbermaid cattle tank outside in my backyard. They have babies every year that I just release on my property. I do catch them out of the bin for hibernation on my enclosed back porch because in the bin they can't get down past the frost line. I have a smaller hibernation bin on my porch and I keep a small heater out there so that the temperature doesn't get lower than the mid 30s. I don't think that they are endangered here in Maryland. I see them pretty often in wooded areas where I live.

  • @china_sickness7005

In my state (Kentucky), we have five lined skinks which are almost identical to the ones you talked about. They’re everywhere in Kentucky but are endangered in a few other states. I caught a baby once outside at the place where I worked, and it must have been really young because it only acted flighty for a minute or so before it just sat on my hand and looked around. I let it sun on my hand for a few minutes before nudging it into a bush. I could definitely see those little guys being a good pet if they were captive bred for a few generations. The adults are very flighty, but that baby was very chill. I’m guessing that it was so young that it probably had little to no interaction with predators, so it was pretty quick to relax on my open palm

Not sure how true this is, but I’ve heard that smooth green snakes can be quite difficult when it comes to feeding in captivity, and to successfully own one you should have a captive spider population as they mainly consume spiders in their natural diet, this will likely be different with captive bred smooth green snakes, but in research facilities/education facilities with smooth green snakes collected with permits it’s sometimes hard to get them consistently eating and sometimes have to start off with assisted or even force feeding. their not the easiest to care for, I have heard that rough green snakes don’t have this problem, let me know what you think.

A misting system or fogger or redo the setup with a false bottom in the enclosure and pour water in the soil to make the humidity last a lot longer

Hey! Appreciate the video. Are blue-tailed skinks ok to keep in 10 gallons? I've seen a lot of people debating between 10-20

A neighbor put a 60 gallon tall to the curb, picked it up and brought it home. Any reptiles/amphibians for it? Or just an aquarium?

The viper gecko is so adorable but my next reptile I want to get is a skink and I never knew about Fiveline skinks!!! They look so gorgeous. Do you have any recommendations on where I can buy or adopt one from? Really appreciate it 💙

Why am I here? Because I want to get a pet reptile at an expo in May, and your channel presents a lot of different breeds by metrics I care about like "easiest," "most affectionate," etc. You basically pitch a bunch of reptiles to me so I can pick out the one that I like the most and can also meet the care requirements for! Right now I'm thinking crested gecko or some kind of skink btw

Why do we keep our pennies? We something with which to measure smooth green snake eggs, viper geckos etc. What would you have us use, the metric system?
