Creating Roast Profiles in Artisan for the Hermetheus Roaster Black Box and Co-Pilot Automation Kit

  • This is a detailed (and admittedly lengthy) tutorial designed primarily for owners of the Hermetheus Roaster Co-Pilot roaster automation kit. However, the process of creating the profiles in this video can benefit anyone using Artisan Roaster Scope software (although the profiles are still targeted to a fluid bed roaster audience).
    The chapter points below can help you jump to the right chapter:
    00:00 Introduction
    01:28 Modifying an existing roast profile
    07:00 Saving profiles created in Artisan Designer
    09:08 Creating a roast profile from scratch
    22:40 Modifying buttons load profiles
    28:10 Creating new buttons to load profiles
    30:20 Final button cleanup and closing thoughts

    More more and more. Wish I had this two years ago when I started with Artisan. You would have saved me so much time looking everywhere in the internet. Thanks!

    This is a great video, Jason! Very stoked to begin testing my own profiles on my Valenta 7 with the co-pilot by my side. Thank you!

    Your videos are among 5% of the most informative videos about Artisan and roasting. Thank you. It is through the videos that I learned about Hermetheus Coffee and, oh boy, I'm glad I sampled !

    Fantastic cadence throughout. I am feeling fully Elevated to create my first-ever set of buttons!! Also: I like the way you had the phases readouts during and at the end of your roast. I scoured Artisan and have not figured how to display those. Also, loved the explanation of the added Time point on the curve. Wow, what if that dialog one day comes with an Edit button to that point, eliminating the finicky push/pull UI. Great job, Jason!

      Hi, Chuck. You can enable those on-screen phases by going to Events>Phases and check the "Phases LCDs" box. Easy as that! Thanks for the kind words.

    Great explain this process. Takes the fear out of screwing something up. I already changed some buttons, now I can create some new ones. Want to take some of my Kaffelogic curves and create them here.

      So glad to hear this, Bruce! This is precisely what I was hoping to hear. Recreate those Kaffelogic profiles!

    No need to turn ON to show the custom event buttons. Just use menu View >> Buttons to toggle visibility (or just press the corresponding shortcut key 'b'; see menu Help >> Shortcuts for a complete list of keyboard shorts). The selected visibility is remembered per state (OFF/ON/START). Same for the other UI elements under menu View.

    Great video! About to start my roasting journey and already feel better about understanding how the program works. Curious if you have a chart somewhere that gives a breakdown of solid roasts based on bean type? I do plan on an ethiopian Yirgacheffe as one of my regulars.

    • @hermetheuscoffee
      @hermetheuscoffee  Před rokem

      I don't have a chart like that, and while there are exceptions to every rule (including your personal taste preferences), I find that a naturally processed Yirgacheffe really shines with a light roast. The "408 in 10m30s" is my go-to for this very bean, because it brings out the fruity notes really well. I've also had some naturals that seemed a bit too "grassy" with that profile, so I would need to go a bit darker. On the other end of the spectrum, wet-hulled beans (Java, Sumatra, etc.) are traditionally roasted darker, perhaps to second crack. Then you'll always have regions like Colombia that has such a diverse selection of flavor profiles, there's no real go-to roast. Some roasters like to use a ladle to remove several sample-sized quantities of beans starting shortly after FC. For instance, grab 50g of beans at 410, 50g more at 420, 50g more at 430, etc. Then do a blind cupping and find out a general drop temp that works well for that bean. I hope this helps... happy roasting!

      @@hermetheuscoffee Where not when, so sorry for my bad english. Ok I understood but I want to use it with a modified popcorn popper and control it by Artisan scope v2.4.8 via an arduino board. thank you for your prompt interaction. kind regards

      @hermetheuscoffee  Před 11 měsíci

      @@Serrajimed Ah, I understand. This video is really directed to Co-Pilot owners. Of course, the process of CREATING a roast profile shown here is valid for any Artisan user. You don't have to create a button to access a saved roast... you can simply go to "Roast>Background" and load a saved profile from there.
      Good luck on automating your air popper! There are plenty of ways to do that using things like Phidgets, Yoctopuce, and TC4+ boards, so I hope you have fun with it.

      @@hermetheuscoffee indeed, Jason after your answer yesterday I understood that I must proceed differently and I managed to create a profile from the designer and I reduced the points to 5. this morning I tested this profile empty without putting anything in the popcorn. what I can't understand is why it doesn't follow the profile my bt graph is far from being similar to that of the profile. I haven't read any tutorials but something escapes me. thank you very much for your request.

    One difficulty by Mac OS is the syntax of paths. I looked at the Help on making a working button, also looked at Mac OS syntax. Nothing worked to invoke the profile to load.
    loadBackground()
    loadBackground(Maximus/Applications/Artisan 2.6/Profile Curves/"Finca_411_46-41-13.alog")
    loadBackground(Maximus\Applications\Artisan 2.6\Profile Curves\"Finca_411_46-41-13.alog")
    loadBackground(Maximus:Applications:Artisan 2.6:Profile Curves:"Finca_411_46-41-13.alog")
    Marko, would you have the accurate path syntax for Mac?

    • @hermetheuscoffee
      @hermetheuscoffee  Před rokem

      You just need a leading forward slash on your file path! loadBackground(“/Users/Jason/Documents/myprofile.alog”)

      @@hermetheuscoffee so I wound up doing that. So many other complications with it loading. It says it does in the log and then it does not show. Hit Reset and it shows. Hit reset and it doesn’t clear. Very funky. Not sure I’m a candidate with a mac. I can do it manually. Looked good on the Pc.
