    Wow...this brought tears to my eyes. I thought it was just me. Been feeling like such a failure after I left my General Surgery residency in my 4th of 5 years. I. Just. Couldn’t. Anymore.

    I like that she brought up the fact that you can practice after intern year. Its not talked about now but is still a viable option that I think can help our primary care shortage problems and also help physicians fit their practice into their vision as opposed to their vision into their practice.

      YES!!!

      @mrkornabbio Před 2 lety

      @@PamelaWible Please stop saying this to future doctors. You can only practice after a year if you went to a US medical School. In NY for instance, you need to do three years of residency if you went to a foreign medical school to practice on your own. In addition, its state dependent with limitations and you don't have the opportunities or education to actually practice as freely as a residency trained medical doctor.

    • @PamelaWible
      @PamelaWible  Před 2 lety +1

      @@mrkornabbio correct it is state dependent which is exactly what I tell folks who call me. Different for US grads versus IMG/FMG. I suggest anyone who is interested in practicing without completing residency contact me and happy to guide them to resources. You have MANY options. Never choose suicide or give up your dream. Many ways to be a healer. Since retiring my license in 10/2021 I'm having a greater impact now as a "coach" helping disillusioned docs create their dream jobs. Residency is only one route among many (that you will not learn about from your conventional training).

    I love this so much! I just left conventional medicine (not as a doctor, but as an Anatomical Pathologists' Assistant) to pursue my dream of helping people through a functional medicine model. It makes my heart so so happy to see a group of physicians that I would truly want to partner with because their vision for health is in alignment with true health. We need more and more and more of you all over the national to have a true revolution.

  • @mrkornabbio
    @mrkornabbio Před 2 lety +2

    I think this is a cautionary tale. Don't go into allopathic medicine if you aren't able to sacrifice your long term goals of practicing for the short term. The education is long and grueling for a reason. You had the rest of your career to learn about alternative medicine or do whatever you want and you won't be limited, can practice anywhere, and don't have any administrative hoops because you paid your dues.
    There are tons of physicians who don't leave early and do what they want to afterwards. Also, many physicians don't even have the option leaving residency because they can't get licensed until they complete it. You can have a limited license if you leave after a year but only if you went to us medical school. If you're a prospective MD or a resident and struggle with the same burnout symptoms as this person, there are other options that won't limit your opportunities later in life.
    Don't give up if you're in residency watching this. You can take a leave, talk to your program, get treatment for anxiety and/or depression, you don't have to be perfect in residency, it's there for you to make mistakes and learn, you can buffer the scarcity because it is only temporarily. There are many other options such as adjusting rotations, electives, taking easier ones, transferring to a different program, ect.
    To be an actual medical doctor you do need to learn how to balance the challenges of practicing medicine in this capitalistic system. This woman, although very intelligent, caring, compassionate, and who would have made an amazing MD, drastically narrowed her future opportunities and doesn't know what she doesn't know. Had she stayed in the system, she may have developed other skills to get through it and the skills she learned by leaving would have been learned afterwards or could have also been learned during the program with self-directed, interest based scholarly/clinical activities. All the things she wanted to learn were always there for her.
    I don't like this video because she casually makes it seem like leaving residency can be a good option for burnout. It is most definitely not the option unless you don't want to be a doctor anymore. To me, this woman may be a healer but she is not a doctor. The difference is in the training and if you bail early you don't get the knowledge from the volume of patient's you treat. Residency is not being a doctor but it is needed to actually become one. Don't give up if your burnt out, speak to others, and keep your head up. The system won't let you fail if you stay in the arena to fight. Like all difficult things it life, good things come from sacrifice, take it one day at a time, and sooner than you realize you will be done and can actually create the credible clinic in any state that you want and do whatever you want.

      @user-tx1eu1md5n Před měsícem

      It's residency that causes burnout in the first place. Let's start from there. It's a system designed to extract resident labor at a much lower price for hospitals. You can separate capitalism and burnout. The former leads to the latter.

So I was thinking of seeing what other options are out there, and your testimony helped me see that not liking being in a hospital 36hrs straight without much sleep 3 times a week its okay....Thank you very much for sharing it :)

    I’m a first year med student, and I can already empathize with her situation. I came into medicine to be a healer… to see people and listen to their stories and provide healing and prevention. I teared up watching this, and I often wonder why I feel like I’m the only one who feels like this. I want to practice integrative medicine one day, bringing in CAMS into my practice. Her story and interests align with me. How can I plan out a career path like hers? Where can I seek guidance?

      Try to stay the course. You aren't the only one who feels like this. Instead of running away from the feeling embrace it and stay within the system because outlets emerge for the feeling which will make you an incredible doctor. You don't need to leave medical school or residency to become a healer by stopping this feeling, you need to stay in medical school and channel the feeling to become a healer. Trust the process and continue nurturing your passion and at the end of it you will have more skills and abilities than you could have ever imagined. First year in medical school is not the same as third year or residency. The art of healing comes from the volume of patient encounters and it has ups and downs like mastering any art.
      The art of true healing comes human connection, a process informed by our own ego's, past experiences, and counter transferences. There is no educational model better for providing you with the volume of experiences required to fine tune yourself. This is the personal education of medicine which exists in the background of the facts, algorithms, and protocols. As you advance in your training, the opportunities to cultivate this improves. You can also choose other specialties such as psychiatry, developmental pediatrics, or holistic family medicine programs that care about the same things you care about.
      Having a small community based cash practice is not the same as being a healer MD. A healer MD can go anywhere and heal, whoever you see, wherever you are, regardless of their co-morbidities, socio-economic status, cultural affiliation, religious attachments, ect. You also get to treat the most poor, needy, and desperate. The system is based on insurance. If you want to help human beings in our society you should want to heal all human beings in society, not just the ones with cash.
      Long story short, sometimes if we spend so much time seeing what something is not, we can miss out on seeing it for what it is. There is a reason it is the most respected job in the entire universe. Trust the process and you won't need to settle in the future.
      Btw, Dr. Wible is well meaning but I doubt her credibility would be the same if she herself didn't complete a residency program. Please Dr. Wible, we need these sensitive people in our system, don't encourage them to leave!!!!!!
