WHY I DRIVE A TOYOTA 4WD | StoryTIME with Andrew St Pierre White

- My relationship with Toyota spans 20 years, from 1994 when I wrote my second book, to 2014 when Toyota South Africa finally handed over the keys of the Land Cruiser Troop Carrier. That was in South Africa and the conclusion of that and many projects. Since that time I have had no connection or link with Toyota in any country. But I look back on it as one of the best experiences of my professional career. And it moved me from being solely interested in Land Rovers, to a life driving all kinds of 4WD. And, I have to admit, why I now drive a Toyota Land Cruiser. This is that story.

As a Toyota Prado Series 90 driver, I must say this is an utterly underrated vehicle. Definitely not as tough as a well maintained Series 80, but easier to drive and maintain. Definitely a badass too. Tougher than the later Series 120 and 150 for sure. In fact, the later versions had the D4d 163cv engine that combined good fuel economy and reliability; a class on her own for sure.
Give that man a Land Cruiser. Excellent story time.
your comment reminded me of Chadwick Boseman
R.I.P king 😭😭
I love that mechanic story at the end. When the customer knows more than the technician, it drives them nuts.
Hear, hear!
The anecdote about putting the vehicle in fifth gear and pumping out the water by turning the wheel by hand was brilliant. Very ingenious.
I can relate. I grew up in a die hard Ford family. On a wim I bought a 1980 Hilux, and it's steam rolled since then and I'm a die hard Toyota guy.
You may have addiction issues buddy :P But for reals its nice to be in a vehicle that does its job. With all that we have to worry about on the road or off road its nice to know the vehicle will do its job.
Ive always been into old Toyota pickups and Land Cruisers. Only vehicles that have never left us stranded
NATSCHKE FAMILY ADVENTURES pana
Andrew, '12 hilux owner myself, I wanna say I have watched all your vids twice +. I also own prado 120. And I used to have Pajero as a company car. I hope to get my hands on 70 series eventually but those come rare and tremendously expensive where I live. In any case, 5 + years with hilux, fully built and didn't have to change a "bulb".
i've also had 6 toyotas....all of them landcruisers....1 70series, 2 73 series and 3 75 series....they are just invincible!
the same reason you change your motorcycle for new ones or girlfriends for new ones.....you always want new. It's not that you need them....you want them! There is no other 4x4 vehicle in today's market which can be as relliable as a 70 series!
@mvubu1234 do you believe andrew st pierre changes his toyota's because they are broken???
6 Landcruisers. I’ve owned 1 Land Rover defender 300tdi since 2006 my only car and daily driver. Surely that more a definition of being invincible 😄
I appreciate your transparency about this. Thanks for the time and energy that went into making this video.
Andrew, I deeply appreciate your stories, videos, and the way you share your vast experiences. I am absolutely addicted to your CZcams channel. Thank you for the many wonderful hours of educational and very entertaining content. Every day, I check the channel to see if there is anything new. If not, I dig into the archives. Thank you!
Andrew, your videos are never to long.....keep the good work. Best regards.
Really enjoyed the stories! Thanks for sharing with us. It’s amazing the history and experience you’ve had with these vehicles.
Thanks for your stories! I just can't miss any of your videos and what every commercial up to the end to support you!
it takes a lot to follow through your dream and passion to this point. This is amazing. I cannot imagine the amount of time, effort, money and sacrifices you have to go through, love your work.
Thanks again Mr White. It was watching you and Mr Dahl for the last few years that helped me decide on my vehicle. I have a 20 year old Prado that I purchased for an awesome price, and in the couple of years I've had it, it has never let me down. Have been to north Wales several times fartarsing about, and a long trip in the Pyrenees which was fantastic. It's just passed its MOT today with a couple of advisories, a great truck :-) Thank you again for all of your videos, I love them. Just a shame I'm stuck in Blighty with all its restrictions. Best of luck to you, keep them coming. Cheers
Your story telling is excellent and they are never too long. May there be many, many more.
Thanks for the insight in your relationship with Toyota, and your Troopy builds are THE best.
I absolutely adore this kind of videos. Proper experienced people sharing experiences and knowledge. Congratulations on Your work.
Your stories are the adult equivalent of hans Christian Anderson for children absolute brilliant Andrew thank you for sharing from UK
Well said.
If u want to go on an expedition get a Land Rover, if u want to come home from an expedition get a Landcruiser!
Wind Tech 🤣🤣🤣
Awesome!🤠
Well said! The best landrover is the one built by toyota - uhhuh!
You have such an uncanny and entertaining way of telling a story Andrew.
Soooo riveting, I felt like I was in that dealerships workshop helping you find the problem.
Cudos to Guin for bringing your tools along.
Cheers from NSW mate...
You are an inspiration. Your natural humility and yet confidence in your knowledge speaks for itself.
What an amazing interview. Andrew reminds me so much of James May, can listen to both guys and hours and hours
I throughly enjoyed the delivery of your narrative. Brought a smile to my face. And yes I live vicariously through your videos.
It just doesn't get any better than your stories, just the best and we can learn a lot . thanks neat time Happy Trails .
Hi Andrew.
Thank you for your fantastic videos.
I really appreciate your honesty, passion & energy.
Fantastic to see and very rare in today's day and age....
What an extraordinary and inspirational story. I've watched this several times and it's such an encouraging story.
Fantastic Video. Wonderful to hear that Toyota gifted you your demo vehicle & Lovely to hear your publicly thank them.
Really interesting video delivered perfectly. Best of luck to you Simon
You sir are inspiring! Hearing your stories makes me a little kid again! Very discriptive and it feels like I’m in the deserts in Africa traveling with you! Please make more of your stories! Stories like this I would love to tell my children and have them ready to go on any adventure in life!! You just got another subscriber!!
You remind me of my grandfather. Great story teller. Can't believe I watched this ENTIRE video. Love ur channel sir
Another great video about interesting subjects; off roading, camping and trucks.
Thanks Andrew. You're a very good story teller.
Powerwagon 2018
love watching these videos during lockdown - a great escape...
AWESOME PODCAST... saved this offline with youtube red and listened to it in the car !!
I do love the troopy, looking forward to seeing it again tomorrow.
Loved, loved, LOVED your stories. Love Land Cruisers. Absolutely amazing vibe throughout the entire video. And at the end, just as you were saying you hoped it's not too long, I was like... No, it was too damn short! I want more!
Thank you mr. White! You're an awesome awesome guy.
p.s. On the side note, I've owned 5 Land Cruisers, and currently have two. One of which is a 120 Prado with 923 000 km's on the clock! I just know what you're talking about. I know! They truly are special. Indestructible, amazingly well put together, rugged, utterly capable and unstoppable machines. Nothing else comes near the level of a Land Cruiser. Nothing!
I truly have no idea why I haven't yet, but I am now subscribed indefinitely. Gonna start watching all of it. Thank you again.
I'm assuming that's the 3 litre turbo diesel version? Can you tell me what you did to look after it? I have one that's done just over 220,000 and want to make sure it's looked after properly.
Great to listen to someone so interesting and articulate. Great video thank you!
I own a 2007 Toyota Hilux. Its my daily driver and I absolutely love it. Thank you for all your amazing videos!
The voice of reason...this man could teach us all something. Thanks Sir for your videos.
AMAZING VIDEO AND GREAT STORY - and I don't even own a 4X4 !!!!! I LOVE THIS TYPE OF STORY TELLING!!!!! YOU ARE AMAZING
Oh man, “please please please listen.... it doesn’t have an ECU.” I can so relate to this !
It is absolutely delightful listening your stories. Thanks.
Excellent! Love these stories from you Andrew.
YAY 1 HOUR VIDEO!!MORE LIKE THIS ANDREW PLEASEEEE LONGER CONTENT.
FYI. StoryTime playlist. Go crazy! czcams.com/play/PLdZBtPD_yK080u3eJdwu9Jk4knbX6sevX.html
@4xoverland I just saw this thank you so much ill watch it all. I really hope you read my reply to your other video about voting on your USA truck. I really love all the videos so much inspiration. Made my day. Thank you again.
Thank you Andrew for sharing your experiences.
Left foot braking is good stuff! I have been doing that since I saw my grandfather doing it when I was young. Then after I started flying airplanes the left and right foot technique picked up even more! Great vids I enjoy listening to you talk.
Great to hear some wisdom from a wise elder of Off-Roading, thankyou!!!
Great video sir. I love story time with Uncle Andrew!
I hated the way you spoke in the first ever video of you that I saw, story time.
Then the second and then the third, and NOW all I can say is I vividly live through your stories, mesmerized. Your passion is contagious.
So much of experience and material on Land cruiser. I been using land cruisers in Dubai since 5 to 6 years and I am in love with it. I recently own a 200 series so I’ll keep going 😊 I totally get you on your projects I would never let anyone decide for me or force me to buy what I don’t want to do - hats off sir!
Great story!. Thanks for posting this.
I don't care for many people whatsoever. I tend to be a tad difficult I suppose; which is why I'm glad Andrew isn't a cult leader or I'd be completely smitten. I could listen to this man for hours on end. I am a dedicated student. I can't wait to take his Masterclass. I've been blabbering on for 5 years about taking on a documentary type film. I have found both the inspiration and confidence to do that because of this man. Very few have the talent and skill to teach craft. Bravo, ASW!
7th Fire Generation - it's funny you say that. I found myself saying the same thing a few days ago (found his channel about two weeks ago); I could just listen to him for hours!
@@johnbuenaventura1 Hahaha I just found him and I'm literally binge watching.
This was excellent in every way.
The story of the no charge car was amazing.
Best bit was your engine cranking sound:)
Thanks Andrew, another good yarn. Loved it.
You are an inspiration. You reached a 4x4 newbie in TX!
Awesome story Andrew, i really enjoy your experiences
Thank you for sharing your experience!
Awesome video and an amazing store you had me glued from start to finish excellent ☺👍
Man I love your stories, in Northern Kenya landcruisers are the final word in longevity and ruggedness. They rarely break down and they go just about anywhere you can point them.
Love hearing these stories. Brought my first Toyota 5 years ago and haven't looked back since
Can't stop listening to you Andrew. Some magic spell you have that I've been trying to figure it out. It's something about the deep love men have for their vehicles similar to the cowboy and his horse. It is the partnership that brings us through unforgiving terrain and gets us home safely I suppose. A love story with a machine that brings us freedom from civilization. I drive a VW Westfalia. Had it for 30 years with many great memories created with it. I also have a 4Runner and other 4x4s. I love them all like a woman loves her shoes. Always camping whenever I can with the family. Life is great! Thank you Andrew and cheers mate!
Another great story Andrew
I had a similar experience on my 105 last year. The engine cut-out halfway to Broome, cranking beautifully, no fuel. Alas I'd blown a fuse (excessive current draw by relays on aftermarket D-Gas), tried to figure out where it was, but after 10 mins I ended up running a quick fuse and wire straight from the battery + to the injector pump, and kept on driving!!!
For a week or two we jumped out of the car, after turning off the key, to pull the temp fuse to stop the engine! Once back in Karratha, I was bothered enough to figure out the fuse location and replace.
The simplicity of the 1HZ really does give peace of mind.
Awesome....cant wait to see you in Canada!!
As always great info. Andrew please also bring some driving skills part in your videos. Specially you talked about left foot braking please share it with us as well.
Great video as always....cheers from N.Y.
As a new subscriber i have to say i love your attitude and intelligence!! I thoroughly enjoyed your video on your experiences with Toyota. I first saw you on Ronny Dahl's channel as i follow him. I look forward to watching lots more of your videos. I also love overlanding and of course in a Toyota!
Just discovered your channel and love it! Can't believe you never owned an 80 series, the best of the cruisers ever
That wasn't a bad review on Toyota at all, just on some of the people who didn't know there was no ECU on that version. I really liked the part where he got to show his ex work partner what vision he had for the company if he just had some humility to listen to his ideas in the first place. I love a good comeback!
I went the other way Andrew, I started in a Suzuki Sierra, in 1982, then a hilux, followed by another Suzuki, then a jeep Renegade and discovered land Rovers. I currently have 2 defenders, a 1984 110 truck cab and a 2003 defender 90 TD5. Great listening to your talk.
This man has some gold nuggets, once a good listener, he is an oasis of wisdom and Devine understanding....
I have to say again Andrew, Your stories are brilliant!
Maaaaaan those old 35mm film photos distracted me this whole video lol. Those colours are so beautiful.
I always enjoy listing to your stories .
I also had the fuel issue with the 1HZ 105. I bought the vehicle in Cape Town, drove it to Durban and the next night it would not start after driving for the day. I found that it would start when it cooled down but when it was warm, it wouldn’t. Took it to the mechanic and he said it was common with the Patrols and 100 series, either remove or replace the immobilizer unit.
Thanks for the great videos. I have learnt a lot from them.
You crack me up. Another great story to keep me amused while in Covid recovery. 😊
Toyota should give this man a brand new full option 200 series Land Cruiser.
I always enjoy your stories. I am a loyal toyota fan in Arizona and have come head to head with dealers from time to time. Faith in the brand is often higher with owners than dealers. Keep them going as it only seemed like a 5 minute video for me. Spent my early youth in South African and my father took us to Kruger National Park in a Fiat in the early 60's. Left a lasting impression on me.
Amazing information. Really appreciate.
Thank you for the inspiration! I'm a 20 year old danish guy with roots in Uganda. Last week I bought my first 4x4 vehicle here in Uganda together with my dad and a friend. Because we all live in Europe and don't come here to often we didn't want to throw to much money. Therefore we ended up with the 90 series Prado with a 1-KZ and 5 speed manual. We have already been to Kenya for safari and man I love the vehicle. Looking forward to be able to upgrade with necessary equipment in the future!
Do you know the way?
Excellent story! Could sit with a pint and chat hours on! Be well and safe! New subscriber here from Eastern US!
I’m glad that the new truck looks like the old one. 👍👍
Another liked video. I would love to someday travel in a few of your adventuring footsteps.
I love documentaries on all types of things and from alotta sources like BBC and Discovery. One thing i like though, this guy i can just sit down and listen to his stories and experiences and it just transports me back to when i used to listen to BBC documentaries just from the radio.
Brilliant story Andrew. Thanks....
Awesome video again Andrew! I drive a 120 series Prado myself, love it!
Great episode. Love those talks.
Excellent story teller, thank you!
Fantastic story, thank you for sharing. As far as your fuel consumption to George and back, my 2 cents worth having had a similar situation with a modified Volkswagen- cruising at 140km/h and above, you are in a rev range where the engine can make use of the flowed head, modified camshaft profile etc. and actually “breathe”. The increased power and subsequent improved efficiency require less throttle to do the same amount of “work”.
Great videos mate!
Love the stories and the Landcruiser thanks
Fantastic insights.... cheers!
Love your stories thank you!
Great Story Andrew thank you!
I love watching your vids but this was best ... That was awesome how Toyota just gave you the troopie no payment after all the work that you had put into it for them...good on you mate!
You are such a cool guy Andrew. I've watched almost all of your videos and I rate your opinion very highly. It was because of your video of the Toyota Fortuner that I ended up buying one - and loving it! That was back in South Africa. I have also watched your video on emigrating to the UK, and finally Perth, and I ended up immigrating New Zealand. Make more videos! All the best
thanks for this nice story mr Andrew
Just bought my first Cruiser. Happy happy happy.
Andrew Van Staden I take delivery of a new Sahara next week. Can’t wait.
Another tale well told, Andrew. You would be great craic around a campfire.
Loving the channel Andrew I am binge watching your films and loving it. Just watching the one with your review of mitsubishi shogun 🤔😆. Keep the excellent work 👍👍👍
Good video 😄
I enjoyed this 👍🏽
Excellent information. Very passionate and charismatic narrator. Looking at a Land Cruiser specifically because of you! Toyota should thank you.
Thx,Fantastic Story Teller, Feckin Brilliant.😌
