Hi, my name is Emi. I'm born in raise in small town just outside Quebec City, this is where my lovely accent comes from. My #vanlife story starts in September 2018. After a long-term relationship that I was trying for more than a year to rebuild, I decided it was time to end this toxic relationship once for all. This is where I decided to move away from this man that I was still in love with. I put all my belongings inside my SUV (GMC Jimmy) and moved six hours from where I was living. I didn’t know where I would sleep, didn’t know where I would work, but I knew I needed to make a drastic move. At that time, I told myself I would only sleep in my car for a month while looking for a place to rent. What I didn’t know is that one month became another month and another month. In the end, I end up sleeping in my car for a full year. Even if people consider this the lowest time of my life, this experience was the best thing I couldn’t have done with my life. I took that year to focus on myself, decide what I wanted, and most importantly, what I didn’t want. That year made me also realize that for so long, I was chasing the wrong dreams. I was chasing what society wanted me to be: to have a big house, a steady job, kids, get married… None of those dreams was making me happy. In September 2019, while I was actively looking for a van, I received a phone call that someone had found my cat (Kelly). After trying for hours with no success to communicate with my ex-boyfriend (who was taking care of her), I decided to drive the six hours to go pick her up. Without going into too much detail, it turns out he wasn’t able to take care of her anymore. So I brought her in a cat kennel for a couple of days until I found a van we both could live in. I put all the savings that I had accumulated while living in my car and bought my van (a 2011 Ford Econoline that I end up adding a hightop) In the beginning, It wasn’t so glamour. My cat and I were sleeping on a mattress on the floor of the van. We both had to adjust. Now, my cat loves this lifestyle as much as I do; she looks at the window while I’m driving, and she loves exploring new places. Since then, my cat Kelly and I have been living full-time in my self convert van.

It is so true what you say. people paint this glamorous lifestyle and when reality hits the are stuck. Emi keeps it real which I love. One can learn a lot from her.

Emi, any high top above of the drip edge is a problem. A good installation would not require sealant. The fact they try to seal it from the inside shows they don’t know what they are doing. Get a few tubes of Dicor, seal from the outside and inspect yearly. Problem solve, je te promais.
Dicor is the best. Used on Airstreams. Edited to add- there is self-leveling and non self-leveling. Choose accordingly! :)

I mean, in a pinch, if you know it's gonna rain and you're parked somewhere, can you put a tarp or canopy over the van?
I used to have a ford econoline that leaked like crazy… I used marine caulk and didn’t have a problem again.

Get a good size fan and tape it into one of your windows. A good strong fan preferably. What you are going to do is put a positive air pressure inside your van and also run the inside heater in your dash blowing more pressure inside the van. Now with the two fans running have a bucket of soapy water with sponge and go around all the seams and you will see bubbles where any air is leaking out. It works every time. Don’t forget to soap down your fan vents on the roof. It works trust me. Easy to do as well. I sometimes do it right at the car wash station. I have even had good luck just running the dash heater on high but you will have to look closely as the bubbles will be smaller.
People who who want ‘fun’ can vids and nothing else don’t really want to see van life … perhaps they can be directed to the Disney channel instead

Use a caulk like dicor lap sealant. and butyl tape around high top windows, make sure it’s butyl tape. it can be used other places too. Repair just like campers and Motorhomes, with an exterior type of caulk. It’s easy, just takes a while. Watch some Motorhome roof repair. Just check it every summer and remove and replace old caulk when needed. Treat it like it’s a motorhome 😊.

I feel for you! Drove a high top for last owner and it had a small leak by back area, told him and he used something that is made for leaks on trailers to seal it and it did seem to be working because I never seen any water afterwards! Do enjoy seeing your videos and sharing something that is going wrong is educational, and will let others know, so they too can get it taken care of!! It's part of van life too, and your sharing is very helpful!!
There is a product called dynamic it comes in white and grey used to use it to caulk in hurricane windows put on once just like caulking I guarantee it will never leak again you can order it on line

There is an ad on TV here in the US for a product called Flexseal that is supposed to fix all leaks. It looks great on TV, but who knows!
A elastomeric sealant will work great dynamic is good go to.

Emi, the only thing i can think off is buy a tube off silicone. Make it very dry and put that in there. Hope it works.

Marine ply is built for boats so water does not rot them. Probably costs a bit more but worth it.

My home on wheels is falling apart also 😢. Somebody hit n run me the other day while I was out hiking now I have a lot of cosmetic damage. Thinking about getting a new vehicle and starting all over. Idk 🤷♂️

My van got hit from behind at the beginning of February and was just written off! Back to the marketplace but have found a replacement but need to start again setting it up.

There is a product called flex seal you can also get it in a clear color. It is a great product maybe you can use it on your van. I don’t know if it is sold in Canada

Oh my goodness, I feel your frustration.
If I was in your situation I would investigate thoroughly the exterior and try to figure out where the leak is coming from. I was having issues with my car.. had to pull the seats and carpet out twice because passenger side was filling with water when it would rain. I finally found the source and it was leaking through a factory body panel weld.. used some silicone stuff to patch over it and haven’t had water intrusion since. You can find the leak there’s only so many places it could be coming from. Keep your head up, you got this! 😊
