Growing up in my school we were taught not to see people for their skin colour, we were taught to treat everyone the same regardless of their skin, religious beliefs or gender. Now it seems like everything is 50 layers deep that I don't even understand the basic concepts any more, what's racist or isn't what's offensive or what isn't.

For most of his life, and mine, this has been the case. If we only consider racism on a systemic level, then shouldn't racism just not exist anymore? I applied to schools where $3k in scholarships were available if i was not white. White people probably have higher resources on average and thus need less financial help- but its jarring to hear people make those claims of "You can't be racist against X group, racism is systemic", meanwhile groups other than X are the primary beneficiaries of systemic policies (in the current day).

If you intend to call someone something demeaning to hurt them based on race/appearance, then you act on it calling them something mean based on race/appearance, then the outcome is that you are being a little mean racist. Doesn't matter what background, applies equally across the world. No one nows every hateful word, and many words have multiple meanings when used in different context.
