    I just started exploring the Mixolydian and the Dorian scales to break out of the box I've been in for so long. Thanks so much for making it easier to understand Marty and adding The Grateful Dead to the lesson to boot!!

    One of Marty’s great strengths as a teacher is that, while often playing at the top of his game, illustrating the possibilities, he also he keeps it slow and understandable for students. Some teachers get too flashy and hard to follow.

    Great stuff. This is more of a lesson on using B major pentatonic and G# Phrygian to access notes of B-mixolydian, both modes of E-major. I prefer to play B-Mixolydian where 6th string B is the root note kind of like a Mixolydian "home row," and navigate away into these other options, but these are nice tricks for using more of the fret board. As Marty calls it, Tasty Zone. Also, the upper portion of the E-major scale starting on the 6th string puts you squarely in the BB Box key of B. The B-BB Box!

    Cool Lesson, you can add the open E, F# before your G# Mixolydian to get Sense of how the modes tie together. Making it E major, playing from the six note up the scale is E with your pinky, continue up the scale. Just a different way to look at it. E , Ionian on the 12 fret ties together with your G# scale on the 16 th fret. As always thanks for your great lessons.

    I literally just saw a short of you with Fire on the mountain, then I wanted to look at some B Mixolydian and this was the first video that came up with Scarlet begonias, thus completing my Scarlet Fire tone of the day haha. Cheers!

    Thank,Marty. I have an actually relevant question. I think the key is E and the tonal center is B, but I'm not sure which chord(s), if any, are dominant 7s. I guess the B is, because it's the 5, but from there I'm not sure if it matters either way.

    I know the shapes for mixolydian etc, but I have a hard time not seeing the positions as their major scale shape. For instance, I see that position you’re playing in this video as e major fourth position and have a tough time focusing on my B notes because I want to resolve on E in my head.
