- Is Windows Defender Enough To Stay Protected
Microsoft Windows Defender is getting closer than ever when it comes to competing with other third-party antivirus software, but in my opinion, it’s still not good enough. Its OK for basic free protection, but it’s certainly not good enough compared to dedicated antivirus programs like ESET, Kaspersky, Bitdefender and Norton. I would say its not quite as good at protection you against Ransomware as other leading software and Windows Defender also struggles in removing infections once they are on the pc system running live.

Let me know in comments what Antivirus you use.
Kaspersky - not Windows Defender A.k.a. "The Sieve."
Been trying Windows Security for a while and not care for. Going bark to Paid Bitdefender soon
Funny enough I just started using Windows Defender since I just built a new PC. Had good experience with it in my laptops. Was using ESET for almost 2 decades and no problems really until I finally retired my old PC a week ago. It has always been my favorite due to how lightweight it is but I think performance impact is not that relevant in modern mid-high end system these days. Just gonna stick with Defender for now and see if it's good enough for me.
Mcafee is what I use, but I'm not sure if there are better options out there. It would be good to see an up to date antivirus comparison! So we know whats right and wrong from trusted Britec!
@@musicvisualmix799 Paid Bitdefender and Kaspersky are the top 2 and have been for some time.
I have never been infected with ransomware but I can imagine how bad it must be for anyone that has experienced that. I'll continue to use Defender. I find that the paid versions offer too much stuff that I don't need so a freeware alternative will always be my first choice.
I use Malwarebytes and also have Windows Defender enabled. They seem to be perfect working together. Defender needs to back up Malwarebytes because its not a specialist anti-virus program.
the payed version or the normal one?
@@yubix8470 the payed version.
Using two can cause performance issues. Only one AV can be hooked into the I/O efficiently at a time. If you want to check whether defender or malware bytes is hooked in use the eicar test string in a notepad. Whichever one shows the detection first is the one thats hooked in.
Hello Brian, thank you for the very informative video! I was wondering if having Trend Micro on your router ( ASUS) has any advantages working with installed antivirus on PC? If so, what can be said about Trend Micro protection? Thank you.
Defender is generally fine. The only snag is it only really works well providing you remain connected to the internet. If you are offline the protection really drops. Also I would always advise to use the controlled folder access feature as if you are relying on it it's the only way to ensure you don't get stung by ransomware.
As a side note Windows firewall has also been associated with slowing down internet connections.
A very well explained and detailed video.
Thanks
I currently use the built-in Windows protections, but have used Emsisoft Anti-Malware in the past. Emsisoft also offers an Emergency Kit, which is a scanner that can be used without installation to help scan and clean infected computers.
Good software
Good information. The side by side comparison between Norton and Defender did a good job of showing Defender's weaknesses. Definitely has me considering purchasing one of the "premium" antivirus services.
Never use Norton. They are basically classed as malware in the industry. So called reviews like this are sponsored by them.
I have found that many of my clients are looking for the magic bullet to protect their systems. One element often overlooked in malware protection is an informed computer operator.
Certain client locations I go to have kiosk/appliances for scanning pendrives, and it is a disciplinable breach of policy to hook a pendrive into their computer network without it first being scanned at said kiosk/appliances.
@@jaybruce593 good point...........apparently some hackers are stocking urban settings with flash drives with payload attached. They hope some unsuspecting person will pick one up and plug it into their device to see what is on it and boom, their computer is infected. Unscrupulous!
@@jaybruce593 I should think so too
@@bradhood9080 Yup! Security researchers found that if an infected USB drive in a parking lot has the company logo on it, 70% of these USB drives get plugged into the company network by unsuspecting employees. 👍
Best protection is yourself, use ransome ware protection built into one drive. Other 3rd parties are also massive resource hogs. So in theory win defender is fine
Yes, but some people love to click stuff
@@Britec09 unfortunately 😕
@@Simon-vc1wk excuse me can you link me to the video how to set up the anti ransomware one drive thing
Very useful video. Like with all other maladies, prevention is better than cure. That's as much related to an individual's online behaviour and habits as it is to having antivirus software. For my part, I've relied on Windows Defender almost exclusively for the past few years. I'll sometimes run a scan with something different just to double-check, but so far so good. But, never say never!
Great Video.. Thanks Brian 🙂 I may just use eset or Kapersky. I don't do much downloading and i certainly don't open email links. I also don't open seedy sites either. This helped me a lot.
You're welcome
Hi Brian, I found this video very interesting and try to keep on top of all things security on my PC. One thing you didn't mention was Microsoft Safety Scanner. I personally run that once a week as a back up to my anti-virus. What are your thoughts on this bit of free software from Microsoft? Thanks Brian.
Hello there, thank you for making this video, my question is, new malware and threats that are meant to run on windows, I imagine that they would more likely to be made to overpower the default windows antivirus am I right? so, can windows keep up if its the first to be breached?
Very good Britec! An actual infected 2023 Win Defender scan, results and remedial fixes with tools included! Hope you can show us a Backup routine in fine detail, Thank you immensely! 😇🙏
I've been on teams that test workstation loads (OS and app setup) for multi-national defense contractors (big targets). Modern malware is often written by organizations with hundreds of skilled workers (source: FBI).
*It will breeze right past any scanner.*
Don't waste your time with them. Learn safe computing practices and you will be safe.
I agree with your summation and tend to recommend Bitdefender, Avira and Kaspersky for a free option.
For people that want to use Defender, I tend to recommend they use with a better firewall or enhance the existing one with something like Windows Firewall Control.
Due to the mess of a UI I also recommend using an alternative front end, like Defender UI or Windows Defender Configurator.
Both alternative front ends offer much better default profiles than the Defender defaults.
Thanks for the tip!! I just ran Defender UI and I already have Windows Firewall Control. What is Defender Configurator? You mean ConfigureDefender?
@@cammy85 Yeah ConfigureDefender. I realised after posting it is usually shortened everywhere inc the git repo.
How do we get these?
Darn - reminded me to put Avast on my PC after a clean install, trying to sort RX5600 XT vs TV scaling issues, sadly it did not but I found a janky work around. You didn't mention Avast for ransom protection, is it any good IYO?
I tried NPE before and it said all my Ren'py games were infected. So, I never used it again. I'll stick to BitDefender for the Windows system. Great video as always.
Hi Bri, Bitdefender firewall was suggested to me so I paid for the pro version. I then spent a huge amount of time searching what the Bitdefender firewall wanted me to decide what to let through or what to block. I called Bitdefender and they wasn't helpful, they basically said I should know or search what their firewall is asking me yes or no, I wanted premium protection, but with Bitdefender I had to tell the software what to do in the firewall. I blocked some things that were safe and let through unsafe ones so after a year I cancelled Bitdefender as I had to do all the work for the firewall many times in one hour. My windows defender doesn't hassle me every ten minutes like Bitdefender did. Are there any pro or premium software that doesn't expect the user to tell the firewall what to let through every ten minutes. This was helpful. Thanks
Great video! Use the offline scanner in Defender to try and remove the malware. It actually does a decent job at flushing them out although it might not get all at once but good enough to stabilize the OS and then another third party tool should completely removed the rest of the viruses.
That is also another great tool built into windows
@@Britec09 yes indeed that particular tool does work very well. Thankfully they add it in when they did.
What do you mean by offline scanner? Do you mean that one that reboots the system?
I am so scared of malwares that I reinstall windows if I ever get infected, it has happened twice and I have reset my pc both the times.
@@OrbitalSP2 Yes that's the one. It's actually quite effective because the viruses cannot run because the system isn't being booted so it gives the scanner the advantage to remove many viruses that are hard to get rid off.
I would like to see you do some comparisons of different antivirus Software
Sure, I can do that
Any recommendations for low-end system?, I would like to know it, since I will try to use tiny 10, WD took too many resources. I know that isn't the right way to go for privacy and security, but it's the only way to use a low spec processor with windows.
Oh my the "free" programs are getting ridiculous with add ons an advertisements. I will stick with Defender. Great to see the comments about users accepting some responsibility for malware protection.
hi bri,i use avg free but can i use malwarebytes along side it because i have heard that you cannot use them on the same system ?
regards paul .
The best kinds of antivirus is the one that prevents you from running malware in the first place. If that fails, then the best way to remove malware (short of nuking everything) is to not run antivirus removal on an infected OS while the infected OS is not running. So it's best to run before Windows boots because if Windows is not running then neither is the Windows malware. That's why I like the bootable antivirus products that have networking support where they can download the latest detections and get to work scanning for malware on a Windows drive that is not running. You increase your odds of removing malware by running the malware scan outside of the infected OS.
I am interested to have 'removal scan thanks . is the Norton you had for removal free?
Hi
Ben I am Running McAfee Total Protection and How High would you recommend this software?!
With Regards.
Bazz
Good video Mister. B 🙏
Much appreciated
Britec, why don't you test out 'Choose Where to get apps' feature in windows with the mode 'Anywhere, but warn me before installing apps that is not from the Microsoft Store', combined with Windows Defender, against malware?
I would like to see a full malware removal guide video. Thanks in advance.
Coming soon
Should I upgrade on Windows 11 because my Windows 10 install is corrupted but I play competitive shooter games
Why not? if your computer is compatible.
I used to use Bitdefender, but have no issues with Windows Security. I've read comparisons saying it is more or less as good as the other ones.
As for "resource hog", I haven't had that issue on any PC. In fact all PCs it's in use on are running faster than when I had Bitdefender.
Yesss !!! , Virus & malware cleaning videos again !!! , my favourite type of videos !! lol
see what I can do
I actually ran Avira for a long time, but removed it about 18 months ago or so and just rely on Defender. Although I'm generally more vigilant than most people and actually look at my email attachments, don't use cracked software (why would you when there's open source alternatives). Avira was pretty good, but started including too many pop ups to purchase and was installing a lot of useless stuff along side.
Hello again Brian!! Would you PLEASE test EMSISOFT AM against Ransomware and other nasties. It would make a Great Video. Thanks.
Great suggestion!
Would you rate Malwarebytes.. as good as Bitdefender?
Using Norton Internet Security Ultimate, along with Norton Utilities Ultimate, long time user and never a problem.
Combined- $130.00@year, Canadian $.
$11.00 @ month is cheap ease of mind and the plan covers 10 devices, well worth it.
Norton is very good protection
I use Windows Defender alongside Malwarebytes and run Super-Antispyware every morning before any other PC activities. Then I also CLONE my drives every 2 months just in case I get a hard to remove virus or Ransomware attack. Yea, it might be overkill, but I lost all of my C: drive data while running Windows Vista back in 2008 after being infected by a nasty pop-up virus; My Avast antivirus program failed to detect it; I think it was a worm virus because it kept replicating itself in other folders. I resorted to "Nuke and Pave." I went back to Windows XP, then upgraded to Windows 7 when it came out the next year.
Microsoft should redesigned Windows Defender to make it look like the Windows 11 Settings app. It still has the old look matching the Windows 10 Settings app
I agree, looks dated
@@Britec09 Do you still recommend getdataback for data recovery Brian ?
looks mean nothing.
My defender is going crazy, it just detecting threats and delete my personal file, it even says my system32 file has been affected, its just straight, it just detecting any file as a thread, what shoukd i do? Uninstall or get me a third software
Some protection is better than no protection at all, on that respect Windows Defender has done a lot of good on raising the bar.
if you get infected dont waste money on any antivirus. Format drive and Reinstall windows.
I do a image every day with macrum reflect and use a free antivirus like kespersky not reinstalling windows
You need some protection
@@Britec09 i did use kespersky paid but took it off with all the goings on in ukraine
شكرا على المعلومات القيمة التي ذكرتها. انا استخدم برنامج kaspersky Antivirus
Please reply mein question my friend if you can because I am really confused should I go on Windows 11 i5 10400F
Yep just go ahead it wil be no problem 😊
Should be fine
Perhaps this is nitpicking but I believe that it's no longer called Windows Defender, its called Windows Security which consists of Virus and threat protection, Account protection, Firewall, App and browser control and device security.
If you turn on App control then he's pretty good at not allowing an app to make changes to the system unless you give it permission.
I do, however agree that once a computer is infected, Windows Security is pretty useless. However, I find that you'd need various manual hands on security tools to get rid of the nasty viruses and malware anyway, no matter what you have installed.
Windows Security is built-in to Windows and includes an antivirus program called Microsoft Defender Antivirus. (In early versions of Windows 10, Windows Security is called Windows Defender Security Center). support.microsoft.com/en-us/windows/stay-protected-with-windows-security-2ae0363d-0ada-c064-8b56-6a39afb6a963#:~:text=Windows%20Security%20is%20built%2Din,called%20Windows%20Defender%20Security%20Center). According to Microsoft site
I installed ShotCut on windows 10 but Defender would not let me run ShotCut.
So I uninstaalled ShotCut but Windows 10 could not uninstall ShotCut, now what?
I had Zone Alarm on my computer, why was Defender running also?
I like the bird in the thumbnail
What about the paid version of Malwarebytes, is that any good?
I'd like to see Britec round ups of the best free and paid AV/Internet Security software...
see what I can do
I used Defender on a Windows 7 as I was told it was better than the anti virus I was using. Within 30 minutes my pc was infected including one that corrupted my HD so I reformatted and installed W7. That was in 2010. Never used it since. I'm on w11 with a commercial Internet security suite
lol. It is 2023 and you are comparing defender with 2010 version?🤣🤣🤣🤣🤣
I use Sophos on Windows and Clam on Linux/ I noticed years ago, that WD will magically find and block things, even if it's disabled, when the software you are using detects something new. It's annoying.
Britech would made a great audio books narrator.
Thank you
Good one
I use Defender with Comodo Firewall. Never had a virus in my 40 year pc use. Defender is fine.
And I do visit dangerous websites, download cracks etc. etc. I just know how to handle this stuff.
there are alot of antivirus out there, my understanding is that corporate products are better.
What is a really good Total AV?
Perry Ellis uses, Eset Nod
Hi, How good is McAfee Internet security
I have deleted windows defender a month ago due to high cpu usage. I replaced it with Kaspersky Free version and it works great. I am still using windows firewall via Malwarebytes windows firewall control.
windows defender is a resource hog
Kaspersky - out of Russia! As bad as Chinese. No thanks.
What's your opinion of Webroot?
Windows Defender in Windows 11 detects more stuff than Windows 10, found this by updating from (10 22h to 11) and straight away it detected a Trojan.
perhaps you should do a video on Defender in 11?
I haven't used nor needed anything other than Windows Defender since I stopped paying for Norton products like a giant sucker about 13 years ago. My PC, my wallet and I have been very happy ever since.
Do you know how to solve windows event viewer errors?
I waste time trying to solve problems, isnt there someone that i can pay to solve this problems?
Thanks.
I haven't used any third party anti virus since windows 10 was released in 2015, windows defender+ Safe browsing is good enough.
like I said, it depends on the person
Why is the date on your PC showing 14/3/2023 ? it then changes at around 6:55 to 14/2/2023 !!
The virus
I am from the future lol nah it was yesterdays video and I had to end trial.
I've just downloaded Kaspersky Free and in the License Agreement it says ' I am aware and agree that my data will be handled and transmitted (including to third countries) as described in the Privacy Policy. ' In order to proceed with the installation you have to tick yes please ! It's use in the US is banned in Gov circles due to alleged involvement with the Russian Gov. I would advise giving it a wide berth.
If someone has a problem with US then its a must try
I have never used, including my entire household, home office, nothing BUT built in AV since Windows 7. Not one single virus.
As a technician, I've removed many bloatware AV's on customer machines.
Windows defender is solid and works. Just use a VPN and all pop-ups are blocked, so no ransom crap and so on. Now if people are dumb enough to click on random things or open random emails then its their fault that they got virus. I have doing torrents for years and I have no problems.
I have Bitdefender, last 3 years, all good
Windows defender gas come on leaps and bounds. If you practice safe browsing. It's good enough.
I agree, they have made it a lot better
If I try to download programs with cracks I will always be exposed. 😢
Defender was the best thing ever after terrible third party options .Norton in particular followed by mcasky..seemed to be worse than any malware .
Anyone using Norton or McAfee need their head examined!
using norton 360 delux here for up to 5 devices pay 110 dollars a year so far so good been using since 2010 btw if you want a excellent firewall to protects against ransomware i hear commodo firewal is excellent not using here using smart firewall that comes with my norton 360 delux
Norton 360 is very good protection
@@Britec09 sure is
i use defender and also do a monthly free online scan using Eset Online Scanner, i wont touch Kapersky,Norton etc as they are way to bloated for my liking.
Windows defender is quite good nowadays but still not that effective. My number 1 con with defender is with its buggy UI. Also sometimes when you start pressing action its not doing anything. 3rd party av still better for now.
question what if you cant afford paid protection but you still wana stay protected
Thank you
You're welcome
My employer just left Symantec Endpoint Protection and went for Microsoft/Windows defender is the one for windows enterprise different than this? If not, I think they just make a mistake that as Britec09 would say “Will get your fingers burned”
Symantec Endpoint Protection is good
@@Britec09 but my employer got rid of it and replaced it with windows or Microsoft defender whatever enterprise has
Hello, windows security is just fine but you have to wait till it removes threats. Windows security has great malware protection but it removes the threats slowly. I have been using it since 2 years and I don't download things from untrusted websites! I am very cautious about those things. I also do not connect to other networks.
I didn't use any antivirus program before windows 10 1507 only once in windows XP sweet I had AVG and everything was ok
Now I have only windows defender AND it's fine ))
If Norton PE is the Liam Neeson of malware remover tool, who is Windows defender?
Defender is fine. The best thing you can do which most don’t is run in user mode. Then if the bad guy gets in he still can’t make changes. If you are in admin mode he has full access
Norton Power Eraser is a freeware. Why dont u link to its page?
Been using malwarebytes with windows defender never had any dramas
a techguy i watched once said the best antivirus is the user of the pc :} stay safe , great video
That is correct
Keep the AV videos rolling
Cheers Tim
If one is concerned about ransomware they can add Kaspersky free anti ransomware. it runs along side windows defender! lots of folks complain about defender but defenders test results always put it among the top 10 antivirus. The reality is wndows defender is going to keep getting better. my main problem with defender is it's itnerface is all over the place.
Kaspersky is one of the best
I just use Windows defender and Malware Bytes plus Brave Browser
Best antivirus is yourself be smart and do not just click every link that comes into your email box or suggested to you.
Good advise
I use defender along side Norton and don’t have any complaints or problems. I have been using Norton for many many years and have never been infected.
?
I have used them all in the past - If you are an astute and experienced user you probably wont need more than Windows defender - This is not applicable to business users! since the risk to business is greater and requires a better solution. It is without doubt inferior than other brands and especailly short on features. That said whenever any of my customers get infected, I ALWAYS do a complete OS reinstall!
duno man seems a little weird if you really were aiming to remove that virus you should have booted in safe mode, im not an IT but i do service laptops with basic stuff and now a days its rare to see an infected laptop since Win Defender does a really good job at erasing anything that can be a treath
The answer is yes Defender is enough to stay protected especially if you use DEFENDERUI with it an set it to the reccomended setting.
everything you said it is true as I had experienced it
I used to have a Norton anti virus but does not stop from getting loop hole it mean hacker can turn the anti virus off bec of firewall did not detected it that was a bad software that does not fixed or patched for having loop holes . When Norton is turn off and the virus gets in people has more experience be a hacker that is number one become hacker bec won't prevents you from hacker getting inside . I wouldn't leave connection on all the time it wouldn't get in for not use computer.
I used to have Kaspersky since 2017 and last year decided not to renew the license.
If you remain vigilant and not open suspicious attachments and not being stupid when you visit porm sites, Defender will suffice.
Guilty as charged, after having issues with Norton (couldn't pause it and when uninstalling it I couldn't use MS Defender, ended up reinstalling the PC), I am back to basics, tuning MS defender to the best protection. Owning a Pro version of Windows on HP, I also have a HP Surestart, so not really fearing a ransomware. And if it hit despite all odds, I have two copies of all my data and a rebootable usb with complete HP reinstallation from scratch. When exploring an unfamiliar software, I go to the lengths of testing it via virustotal in a sandbox. Call me paranoid. LOL.
I guess that in a year time MS defender got even better with protection. And after watching another video of yours how bogus review websites push fake review and only want to lure customers in... I already pay to MS with my data so at least I get the protection for free in monetary terms.
yes do a comparison of av software.
i always used Windows Defender never have any problems
same.I used it for several years and not infected by any malware yet.
I use Malwarebytes scanner Kaspersky found the threat but could not remove the good ones
Defender + Huntress. Just AV is not enough these days. MDR is the minimum I will use.
i just use window defender and a habit that i pick up from linux... use a limited user account for daily uses..
