  • Hello guys.
I made a video on me starting this bike in Swedish, then I got som feedback of people wanted it in English, so here it comes.
The purpose of this video is to show how EASY it is to start this types of bikes with handlebar decompress, hicompression 4 stroke engine.
People selling these bikes just because they are a nightmare to start.
Sorry for my not perfect English, but if you have any questions please write me or comment.
    Best regards Kim, 🇸🇪

I own a 620 for a few years and i am not planning to swap it for another bike. LC4 engines are IMO best KTM motorcycles.
I never had problems with starting LC4, my procedure is :
    1. Pull choke, and decompression lever, and kick it 3-7 times if motorcycle wasn't running for few days (to prime carburetor with gasoline).
    2. Then slowly push on kicker till you feel resistance (choke on, decomp off), when you feel resistance, pull decomp lever ON, and push kicker 1 notch more, release decomp, and let kicker go up.
    3. Turn ignition ON, choke still ON, and kick it all the way. Mine runs from 1st, rarely 2nd kick.
If you was riding today, or like 1-2 days before you can try to skip step 1, and just kick it with choke.
So basically procedure same as yours, but mine have older Dellorto carburetor, so instead of adding gas one time, i kick it with choke few times - same result. Your 660 have Keihin carburetor if i am correct which is way better design. :)

  • @paulboon1100
    @paulboon1100 Před 3 lety +4

Just like you start a LC4 640 apart from the little black button(different carby). I think its the decomp lever that gets people, they kick the thing to far through the stroke, past the ignition point(spark), the idea is to get the piston just about top dead centre, that first bump you feel, push the starter through that with the decomp lever pulled, then lift the kick starter let the decomp go and "KICK it!", its a "knack", but not difficult. very similar to the old XT/TT 500 and some others.
I just kick started a 2003 640SM that had been sitting for more than a year, took about 10 kicks including "kick through's" (ignition off, tap on, choce on, decomp pulled), no trouble never changed fuel either before starting, runs like clock.

@@alasdairhill5166 Yeah, 4 stroke bikes usually have e-start, and people who cannot kick LC4, or other 4 stroke engines, in 99% cases are used to kicking 2 strokes where you just simply kick it to run - no need of finding TDC, and other "black magic". :)

Most of the times the problem was, that the gas in the float bowl was a few days old and wouldn't ignite. After 8 months i Was able to start her 2nd kick with fresh fuel. I always use the choke when the engine is cold, never use the accelerator pump for starting since. Fresh fuel is the most important thing for a single to fire up.
I always try to shut the gas cock half a minute or a minute before I arrive at my destination to run the bowl almost empty.

I guess you allready figured out in 11month but you Can follow the same procedure but when you hear the click sound instead of just let the kick come up and directly kick it, After you let the kick come up you juste use the decompressor and you activate the kick for like 90 degree slowly, then let it go up once again and then kick it hard. This will take a lot of compression out and normaly that's how you kick start it because of race cam.
