Excellent tutorial! I have one suggestion for making sure the drawstring doesn't pull out. I sew a vertical stitch in the center of the back that holds the drawstring in place exactly in the middle. Tugging on it from either side will keep it from getting uneven and from pulling out. I do this on hoodies, too - even hoodies I buy! I just make a few stitches in the center that holds down the drawstring! Great tutorial, Melly! Thank you!
A heartfelt thanks for this video. I have watched so many and could not get it right until I watched this. I now see a lot of joggers in my future. This is the best tutorial out there to learn this. My only almost fail, right at the very end, was I could barely get the bodkin out of the buttonhole. Also, other elastic waist tutorials say to use a safety pin to pull the elastic through. No! The bodkin is so much easier! I just used my new one for the first time. Thanks again.
Waw! I've been searching for a tutorial like this for a few days and now I stumbled upon it by coincidence. Thank you Molly, I love your content! P. S. What kind of top stitch did you use for closing the casing?
@@Mellysews thank you so much for your reply! I managed to successfully replace a ripped waistband! But unfortunately with one problem. I've been trying for years to make the elastic tension even throughout but I'm not successful. Some "folds" are bigger, some smaller. Could we expect a video on this topic sometime in the future? Thank you again so much, I'll be happy to follow your channel!
I was curious on how this was done though I would never do it myself. Got a really cool set of lounge pants that have no drawstring so need one added on the inside instead of outside along with two zippered/velcro pockets on the legs. What you did looks as good as what an alterations shop would do, very professional! Its soooo beautiful how it turned out :)
Great video! This is my favourite type of waistband to wear so this will be my go to video. Can you also use this method on the ankles of joggers too? Obviously without the drawstring .
I’m just beginning to sew clothing again and knits are a first for me. I love your videos. They’re very easy to follow. What kind of elastic did you use for the waistband and where do you buy it. Thanks.
Great video I will try this. I always find my elastic looses it's stretch when I sew use this method. Do you have any suggestions? Also where did you get that lovely fabric?I would love to get some.
Longer stitch length helps with the stretch. My favorite fabric stores here; can't remember where I got this particular fabric. mellysews.com/7-great-online-fabric-stores-buy/
I need to downsize a waistband that is sewn like this one in your pants. Seems like there is not an easy way to do it! Any suggestions on how to do it?
There isn't an easy way. You have to unpick all the rows of stitching, shorten the elastic, then restitch the rows. Might be easier to cut it off and sew a new waistband on.
When stitching stretch fabrics, you always use a stretch stitch and don't stretch the fabric unless otherwise specified. You might find this video helpful: czcams.com/video/ZnVnFbOC_tk/video.html
I always use safety pins to pull through string or straps, what is the silver stick that you used? Can you link it or tell me what it’s called? I bought long plastic ones from amazon and they don’t work good. Thank you!
The sped-up stitching noise is so satisfying 😁 great tutorial
Thank you! 😊

I’m just beginning to sew clothing again and knits are a first for me. I love your videos. They’re very easy to follow. What kind of elastic did you use for the waistband and where do you buy it. Thanks.
I buy my elastic in bulk at warehouse stores. More about elastic types here: mellysews.com/types-elastic-use/
Beautiful!
Thanks!
Hey Melly, amazing tutorial... question- how much more allowance should you add to your waist measurement
You don't need to add anything to your waist measurement, you just need to use a pattern that is designed for an elastic waistband.
Loved it❤️
Thanks
This is a good tutorial, thanks a lot
Glad you like it!
This is so satisfying

I don’t understand your question.
Thanks so much, I would like to know the the name of pedal please
I don't understand the question - what pedal?
Great tutorial, can you tell me what the gadget is called that you attached to elastic to thread through casing. Thanks.
A bodkin, it's linked in the video description.
Love the look of these! What size elastic are you using ??
I'm using the elastic specified by the pattern, pattern link in description.
Amazing
Thanks for watching!

@@Mellysewsmy mom have tailor shop, I will try the way you did in video, it looks branded I'm very impressed
Great video1 what is the pressor for called? If I don’t have one what could I do?
It's a buttonhole foot, and only works on machines that can do an automatic buttonhole.
Do you use some type of stretch thread or just regular cotton or polyester thread? Thanks!
All purpose polyester
I liked your sewing machine may I know your machine details brand model etc ...
Details are in the video description.
Thank you💜 what size elastic is that?
3 inch
what kind of stitch is used at 3:00 and 4:01? Love the video!
That's done with my serger, but any stretch stitch will work.
Any particular kind of stitch such as a straight stitch?
No, a straight stitch is not a stretch stitch. mellysews.com/types-stretch-stitches-sewing-knits/
Did you do a zig zag stitch on the first top stitch?
No. Since I'm stretching the elastic as I sew I can use a straight stitch.
When you topstitched while making the casing did you stretch the fabric?
Yes, exactly as I showed in the video.
Melly Sews ah I guess I meant the first time you topstitched, cause you didn’t show the sewing in the first one, but you did in the second one.
When stitching stretch fabrics, you always use a stretch stitch and don't stretch the fabric unless otherwise specified. You might find this video helpful: czcams.com/video/ZnVnFbOC_tk/video.html
Anybody got a source on that material? Need asap
Can't tell you where to get this exact one; I bought it years ago at a warehouse.
thanks! Did you make that sweatshirt? I love it!
I did. It's this one in my shop blankslatepatterns.com/products/rivage-raglan
I just shortened the long sleeves a bit and added cuffs.
How many inch is this band
The pattern I used is linked in the video description.
do you use elastic thread to sew the waistband?
no
How many inches did you used for the waist band
I used the measurements from the pattern.
I always use safety pins to pull through string or straps, what is the silver stick that you used? Can you link it or tell me what it’s called? I bought long plastic ones from amazon and they don’t work good.
Thank you!

What sewing machine you use??
It’s a discontinued model.
Was those velvet sweatpants?
This is stretch velvet, also known as velour
Melly Sews thanks you have the best velour pants video on CZcams I hope I can get this good to make velour sweatpants like you too
Where did you get the clips from?
Here: amzn.to/2PJta9t
how many inches is your elastic?
It depends on the size you are sewing, the pattern I used in this video has the measurements in the pattern.
Great video thank you!!!
