If Nintendo hadn't backed out of this deal, Sony wouldn't have entered the hardware market, the N64 would have used CDs, the Sega Saturn would have been a success, the Dreamcast wouldn't have been Sega's last console, and MS wouldn't have had a reason to make the Xbox.
2-Bit Arcade well not really the Xbox was a side project that was put into production because they needed something to test the DirectX function capabilities. But yea if it wasn’t for Sony we could’ve had a different Xbox 360 because of the ibm deal Sony made with them to make a special chip or something.
This system was destined to not have ever happened cause with out it the gaming ecosystem probably wouldn't have had the xbox or at least not where it's at now and it might've given sega a bump in wanting to keep up by partnering with microsoft after the xbox launched to stay in line with nintendo
Even if the super disc made it to market and had sold poorly due to high cost and other factors that wouldn’t have necessarily stopped Sony from going it alone afterwards. By all accounts Sony in the nineties was quite aggressive about expanding their media empire into the digital realm and only a massive failure launching their own console would have sent them packing for good from that space.
Saying there would be no Xbox is pure speculation. There's nothing that says Microsoft would have not tried to get into the game industry at some point.
Hey Ciro It's not fake. Sony and Nintendo had a collaboration once. They wanted to make a console, but never released because of some issues so some people from Nintendo joined Sony and made the PS1.
RetroRoadshow Fuck you, it's not yours. He can throw that shit at a wall if he wants to. Fucking console elitists, you really think the oils in your hand will fuck with ABS plastic? No, they dont
Michael A What the hell are you even talking about? Oils? Who said anything about that? I think it far more likely that it's going to be dropped the way he is handling it. But seriously, there are only a few of these things in existence. Sure, he can trash it if he wants, but that would be purely idiotic if only from a financial standpoint.
He's not too smart imo, he shouldn't even be handling it with his bare hands. He needs to call some legit experts...don't plug shit into it, or fuck with it WHATSOEVER. Call some professionals and auction it off.
Maj0ra You do realize that the bottom half is faded as fuck right? Whatever fingerprints he puts on it will be wiped off when they go to bleach it and put it in a museum, if that even happens.
***** It really needs to be in a museum in a glass case, not in the hands of anyone. This is possibly the only one in exsistence, and a piece of literal gaming history. I'm not trying to dictate him, but with something this rare and valuable it needs to be where it belongs. He should be wearing gloves, i mean you wouldn't touch King Tuts mask with your bare hands would you? I know that sounds a bit crazy and over the top, and im not trying to compare a ancient egyptain aritifact with a console, but it is priceless just like King Tut's mask is. If the guy who owns this, is reading this comment, please keep it safe for the time being, and seriously think about contacting a high profile collector, or even Nintendo, as they might be intrested in displaying it at the Nintendo World store alongside the gulf war gameboy, and the NES prototype. Majora went the the wrong way with his comment, but i see where he is coming from. We have to think logically about this, this is not just a case of finders keepers unfortunately considering the rarity. .
I always come back and watch this every now and then, I still can't believe one of these have been found, I remember seeing the image of it in of my gaming mags back in the day. Glad you are showing it off to the gaming community and letting people play it! Don't every sell it or if you do make sure it goes somewhere like the National Videogame Museum in Frisco, TX and not some collector's house!
Something smells fishy here... I mean, if you're going to film such a "historic thing" why doing it in front of 2 bright as fuck windows, blurry camera whenever he tries to show details and all... I'm not sure if I should think of this being legit or not but my "dis fake m8"-sense tingles a lot here and it never failed me...
Dude this shit is real, this guy on the video just got insanely lucky and found this prototype console, but as you can see he's an asshat and doesn't even know how to record a good video
Raymond Mickey I honestly don't know if he should do that. He should contact someone first to have a look at it to see if it would damage it in anyway before even considering it. He also need to know the right sort of cables too, as its offical cables don't actually exist as far as we know, and using the bog standard cables may damage the system. More than likely though there is possibly a basic boot screen like with the M2 prototype consoles.
TheGreatBritishGamer the power cable would be the only issue. It appears to use the same video adapter as the snes and n64, and it also has rca jacks as well.
TheGreatBritishGamer Yeah I would think that the only thing it would really have is just a boot screen like the Panasonic m2 but nothing other than that.
I guess you have to be a passionate gamer or something because I wouldn't sell this even if it's worth a lot. I would hold onto this as it's an amazing piece of gaming history.
I'd say it's worth much more than that. Old, rare and valuable games cost around ~30,000$. This is a gigantic piece of history in the games industry, that was never released, are probably less than 10 in existance, and gave birth to Sony. I'd say it costs close to 300,000$. Maybe less.
I love these old consoles. . 2 weeks ago I found a dreamcast at the local dump. .in the rain, brought it home let it dry cleaned and plugged it in and it booted with a screen saying 1998 ...the dreamcast boot sound brought back many good memories.
Damnnn. Two of my favorite electronic companies worked together before they became rivals. This sparked the Playstation to exist as well, today I learned. P.S. OP is now rich. Haha, congrats on finding this gem, OP!
Well, it isn't too weird. This console was a myth until it was revealed, and to suddenly have someone pop up on the web saying "Yeah, my dad has it in his attic" will make people sceptical on it. Hell, Ben Heckendorn admitted he though it was fake at first at the Portland Retro Gaming Expo where he held a conference with Dan and Terry.
hey dizz, thanks for the upload. Always been a small fan of nintendo ever since ocarina of time. i would keep that if i were you, its a thing of remarkable history.
I'm sorry but I need to point a few things out about this that seem fishy. First of all, the Nintendo/Sony console was called "Play Station" not "PlayStation". "Play Station" can be seen on a prototype of the 32 bit system as seen here: goo.gl/c3KneF Secondly, the font used on the controller and console itself is very similar to the 32 bit PlayStation and that font was not developed until 1994 - 1995 when the console design and aesthetics were finalized again seen in the above photo. Thirdly, there is no way a prototype console developed by Sony in Japan could make it to the US office and land in the hands of an employee to dispose of. I'm sorry, but this is a fake.
***** Why is only a small portion of it yellowed with age? Also is it me or are there tiny bits of discolouration around the writing on the pad? It would be awesome if it was legit, but there are some things that don't quite add up.
I'm a retro collector, but I won't pretend that I'd know what to do with this kind of a find - it's the equivalent of finding the Holy Grail to people like myself. I just want to thank you for uploading this video +dizzle521, and I hope that the system ends up in capable hands that will preserve it for years to come. :)
You have found one of the holy grails, freaking amazing. I remember reading a Video Games magazine way back when and saw this thing, just like you have, and rumors of a release date. Addendum, my limited Kanji points to that being some sort of boot loader.
The Vicatorian Except it was Nintendo who went behind Sony's back, and made a deal with Philips instead. The day after Sony announced this thing, Nintendo went on to announce their partnership with Philips without even telling Sony first. No wonder Sony was pissed and went on to make their own product.
***** Yeah, but I wouldn't really call that backstabbing since it a contract, and they aren't really valid until signed, also even if it was small print, Sony probably knew that it wouldn't be glanced over, since companies usually have lawyers to read every little detail. In the end it doesn't really matter, we got some great systems and games out of this failed deal, so who can really complain.
Just saw and played street fighter on this console it was awesome. It was nice to meet you and your dad!!! Hope u guys meet someone that could make a nice documentary of your travels. It would be amazing !!!
This Sony Nintendo Super CD use 7.5v like the PSOne, so you can take a PSOne power adapter and try, they have the same voltage and the same power jack!!!! :D @Dizzle521
***** as long as the dc jack is the same it will work (if both have the same polarities at the connector) a undervolt of 0.1 will not affect it in anyway
A CZcams comment isn't really the best place for anything logical, but here goes: Please don't sell this to some private collector who's going to set it on a shelf for the next 10+ years. I assume you're going to sell it and that's cool, it's yours to do what you want with. Just take your time, do some research, and either sell it to someone who will put some serious effort into preserving it (unfortunately I don't have any recommendations for you), or at least work out a deal to let someone borrow it, document everything they can about it, and then send it back (this has been done before with prototype games people have found- for a holding fee they've allowed groups to borrow the game to backup the data then had it returned). You're holding a piece of lost history, and it would be a shame for it to be lost again. Again, it's yours to do what you want with it, but I hope you'll make the right decision and preserve part of our cultural past. Just some advice :)
Cool find! This is one of probably 20 different prototype designs of course, doesn't look like the one featured in the 90s EGM which showed it was able to stack onto the bottom of the SNES. Nintendo has always made several different prototypes of an idea and then finally decided on a specific design.
Please show gameplay when you get this thing working but it really should be in a museum because of how amazing it is and how much of a piece of gaming history it is
I want to have it in my hands so bad it hurts. lol This is just an awesome find! I hope you can do a sit down 360° review of it after you've safely found out how to hook it up or examine it in more detail.
Couple of things I picked up on, regards the power cable I think it possibly uses the cable for the PSOne, just check the voltages on the back of the console. It also looks like the AV output is the standard PS1/PS2 cable and that expension port on the bottom is the same one that was on the earlier versions of the Playstation (I could be wrong on that though, I haven't seen the back of a Playstation in god knows how long! The controller is definitely a re-badged SNES one though
Thanks for sharing this! Please post a video of it running -after you find the CORRECT power cord. (I agree with you -plugging in the wrong power would VERY likely damage the console forever)
Thanks for the video! This is so exciting. So one thing I wondered was this guy, Olaf... are you sure he worked for Nintendo and not Sony? There was a very famous Olaf who basically founded Sony Entertainment Inc.
DON'T PLUG THINGS INTO IT DON'T PUT IT IN DIRECT SUNLIGHT DON'T TOUCH IT WITH YOUR BARE HANDS DON'T BREATH ON IT DON'T EVEN FUCKING LOOK AT IT KEEP IT IN A SAFE FILLED WITH PILLOWS UNTIL A PROFESSIONAL LOOKS AT THIS SHIT
I can't believe someone actually found one of these! I hope we can eventually see how the system starts up and what is on the cartridge! He should really be careful with it though, as it would be awful if it broke! Maybe he should think about selling it to an expert (if he isn't already one).
+dizzle521 Thanks for uploading! If you do plan on testing this at some point - PLEASE get the unit checked by someone technical to make sure the regulators / caps / mobo are all OK before powering up. Those checks should include a quick visual, and basic resistance checks to see if there are any obvious shorted components etc. It's also worth checking to see if there are any leaking electrolytic capacitors, as this is a very common issue in retro gear. Also, please do NOT plug in a standard SNES PSU, as those only output AC !!! (at least here in Europe), and it will VERY likely kill the machine as soon as you plug it in. :o (whoever says to use a SNES AC PSU has no clue about basic electronics, so is either trolling, or just a complete moron. lol) The PSU for the later version PS-One should be perfect for powering the unit, but I'm not sure if the plug will be an exact fit. The slightly lower PSU output of 7.5V certainly wouldn't do any harm. (always check the voltage and polarity first though, as there were quite a few different revisions.) (The full 7.6V will likely be for powering the CD drive motors and laser sled coils. A higher voltage is bad, but 0.1 V lower probably wouldn't stop it working completely.) I also wonder if there's still a CD inside - that would be just as rare (and possibly valuable) as the unit itself.
My friend at Nintendo told me this was an authoring / test system created for SNES Game development, and the Playstation logos are just stickers that were added by someone after the fact.
this is the "original" one i.kinja-img.com/gawker-media/image/upload/s--4ANHebBS--/c_fit,fl_progressive,q_80,w_636/18j0wgghkmbh7jpg.jpg there is a few diferences, but the control port and console buttons layout looks like the same. the playstation from the image looks more polished, this one looks like an early concept.
Thanks for uploading this, but I do have a concern about how the top half of the system and the bottom are prestine white, yet the bottom half has the infamous yellowing that an old snes is known for. That doesn't really make sense.
"Secret of Mana was originally planned to be a launch title for the SNES CD add-on. After the deal between Nintendo and Sony to produce the add-on fell through, the game had to be altered to fit onto a standard game cartridge, which had less storage space than the SNES CD add-on would have allowed. The developers initially resisted continuing the project without the CD add-on, feeling that too much of the game would have to be cut, but they were overruled by company management. As a result of the hardware change, several features had to be cut from the game, and some completed work needed to be redone. Most major of these removals was the option to take multiple routes through the game that led to several possible endings, in contrast to the linear journey in the final product. The plot that remained was different than the original conception, and Tanaka has said that the original story had a much darker tone. Ishii has estimated that up to forty percent of the planned game was dropped to meet the space limitations, and critics have suggested that the hardware change led to technical problems when too much happens at once in the game. In 2006, Level magazine claimed that Secret of Mana 's rocky development was Square's main inspiration to move their games, such as the Final Fantasy series, from Nintendo consoles to Sony consoles in 1996"
First of all, thanks for sharing this video with us, that's highly appreciated. Uh and, congrats on being now a rich man. Whenever you decide to sell this amazing piece of videogame history, you'll be adequately rewarded. Money shouldn't be a problem for the rest of your life. Now, having that said, do the right thing. Put this thing in the hands of an expert, in order to have it tested and possibly reverse engineered. Don't even try to power it on, you should fry the whole thing. Alternatively, go to Neogaf community and ask for advice, there's plenty of people who can help.
3formsofMATTer The playstation superdisc isn't the addon, but the stand-alone unit they prototyped. The snes CD add on on the other hand looked very much like a Satelaview.
3formsofMATTer the expansion port is probably a passthrough for the one on the snes itself so you could still use the satellaview and any other add-ons they were suposedly gonna come up with
Kellie Smith because they basically just stacked a snes ontop of a disk drive like the famicom and famicom disk system if they were attached on top of eachother like one unit
That really should be in the gaming museum or something. thats a HUGE piece of gaming history its incredible to even see and know of its existence. but thats just me.
Holy cow! This needs to be put in a museum. Send it to someone who knows what to do with it, so like you said, it doesn't get fucked up by using the wrong power supply.
I feel like I'm witnessing somebody discovering the original copy of the Declaration of Independence. This is HISTORY.
3 days later, he was found dead on his house, and the cause of the death was an "accident" and the Nintendo Playstation prototype was gone as well.

Nintendo backed out of the deal for good reason. The deal heavily favored Sony. Look at the console, it primarily says Sony.

A CZcams comment isn't really the best place for anything logical, but here goes:
Please don't sell this to some private collector who's going to set it on a shelf for the next 10+ years.
Please show gameplay when you get this thing working but it really should be in a museum because of how amazing it is and how much of a piece of gaming history it is
I want to see this system's startup screen and playthrough soo bad! :D
History Right here.

I want to have it in my hands so bad it hurts. lol This is just an awesome find! I hope you can do a sit down 360° review of it after you've safely found out how to hook it up or examine it in more detail.
That console is a hidden gem of video game consoles.
I saw this at a local indie game store, was wondering whether to buy it. Is it worth $80? because I love the concept.
I love how after he said not fake he then said not made by some Russian dude I thought that was really funny
As long as the cables fit, it shouldn't hurt it. I used a stereo power cable to power my Ps2 for 10+ years, it still works to this day.
Please connect that thing to tv! I wanna see a retro rare gameplay! Please, i pray you! ;)
Bella fraa
*brings it to gamestop*
Employee: we can give you 1 cent for that
Nah, More like 30 dollars and 5 store credit.
I would be so scare for my life and family if i had this thing in my house
DON'T PLUG THINGS INTO IT
DON'T PUT IT IN DIRECT SUNLIGHT
DON'T TOUCH IT WITH YOUR BARE HANDS
DON'T BREATH ON IT
DON'T EVEN FUCKING LOOK AT IT
KEEP IT IN A SAFE FILLED WITH PILLOWS UNTIL A PROFESSIONAL LOOKS AT THIS SHIT
This is literally the last person on earth you would expect to find something like this.
Amazing find, truly a very unique part of video game history.
**speechless**
The power input requirements are right on the back...
***** I know, right. When he picked it up and just whipped it around I almost died.
He was scared there was a self destruct
Thank you SOOOOO MUCH FOR UPLOADING THIS! I HEARD ABOUT THIS TODAY AND IMMEDIATLY GOOGLED IT! THANK YOOOU!
I can't believe someone actually found one of these! I hope we can eventually see how the system starts up and what is on the cartridge! He should really be careful with it though, as it would be awful if it broke! Maybe he should think about selling it to an expert (if he isn't already one).
This should be in a museum not in some dudes kitchen lmao.
😂😂😂😂😂😂😂😂

Thanks for uploading!
(whoever says to use a SNES AC PSU has no clue about basic electronics, so is either trolling, or just a complete moron. lol)
The PSU for the later version PS-One should be perfect for powering the unit, but I'm not sure if the plug will be an exact fit. The slightly lower PSU output of 7.5V certainly wouldn't do any harm. (always check the voltage and polarity first though, as there were quite a few different revisions.)
(The full 7.6V will likely be for powering the CD drive motors and laser sled coils. A higher voltage is bad, but 0.1 V lower probably wouldn't stop it working completely.)
I also wonder if there's still a CD inside - that would be just as rare (and possibly valuable) as the unit itself.
This is amazing. You need to test this out sometime, PLEASE
My friend at Nintendo told me this was an authoring / test system created for SNES Game development, and the Playstation logos are just stickers that were added by someone after the fact.
LSGNKDMSTWSL Your ‘friend at nintendo’ is made up and you’re full of nonsense. This is completely legit.
At gamestop they will give him $8.75....
Bora Rossi naw dude its like 20 yrs old probably 5 dollar in store credit if he includes the cartridge lmao
this is the "original" one i.kinja-img.com/gawker-media/image/upload/s--4ANHebBS--/c_fit,fl_progressive,q_80,w_636/18j0wgghkmbh7jpg.jpg there is a few diferences, but the control port and console buttons layout looks like the same. the playstation from the image looks more polished, this one looks like an early concept.
Hi Dan! How time flies!
Thanks for uploading this, but I do have a concern about how the top half of the system and the bottom are prestine white, yet the bottom half has the infamous yellowing that an old snes is known for. That doesn't really make sense.

What if you get it to work and then it asks you to insert a cd alongside with the cartridge?
The fact that this exists is just amazing.
In 2006, Level magazine claimed that Secret of Mana 's rocky development was Square's main inspiration to move their games, such as the Final Fantasy series, from Nintendo consoles to Sony consoles in 1996"
I am pretty sure the cartridge says "Demo-yō" or "For Demo"
And yes, please get this to a museum.

Alternatively, go to Neogaf community and ask for advice, there's plenty of people who can help.
this is really interesting. please post a video once you get it powered up!
I'm calling fake, it was an add on to the SNES but at the bottom it has an extension port so your telling me an add on was gonna have an add on?
3formsofMATTer
The playstation superdisc isn't the addon, but the stand-alone unit they prototyped.
The snes CD add on on the other hand looked very much like a Satelaview.
3formsofMATTer Yo dawg! I heard you like add ons, so we added an add on to your add on!
3formsofMATTer Playstation wasnt add-on. And yes, there is Satelaview and other stuff to add.
"Not fake, not made by some Russian duuude"
It would be so cool to see Zelda OOT for download in the PSN store one day.
There's no way in hell that I wouldn't try to plug this up because sony and Nintendo only made 1 set of cords for everything back then plug this up
Super Mario Croft.

Hey, I saw your post on Reddit like twenty minutes ago. Nice get, dude.
If this is legit, the best place for this would be at a museum. It's a piece of history that everyone should know and appreciate.
Watch...techrax will destroy it by tomorrow
Noah Steinke that would be awesome!
Wouldn't be surprised if someone breaks into his house and steals it, it'll probably be gone by tomorrow lol
That really should be in the gaming museum or something. thats a HUGE piece of gaming history its incredible to even see and know of its existence. but thats just me.
Get this to a museum now!
Is it a kid or a squid?

Handle very carefully! Incredible find.
Holy cow! This needs to be put in a museum. Send it to someone who knows what to do with it, so like you said, it doesn't get fucked up by using the wrong power supply.
