  • The Nintendo Playstation changed gaming history as much as the Switch has done. This is the story of how Nintendo created its greatest rival and the only surviving prototype.
The collapse of this unusual partnership in 1991 brought a new player Sony Playstation, which to this day dominate the home console market.
You can see, touch and play the Nintendo Playstation at this year's Retrospillmessen: retrospillmessen.no/

CDs and DVDs were extremely fragile. I never actually had any DVD-based game I had become unusable (I've never played a CD-based that was non-emulated, they were a little before my time) I've only had a very small amount of DVD'S become useless. I would frequently have issues when I rented games or DVDs though as people wouldn't take care of them. I would also cringe when I would visit some one and they would out a DVD down on the table and let it sit on the part the reads. Blue Ray's actually fixed this, they are very hard to scratch unintentionally, even if you are being stupid with them, they need force to scratch. Blue Ray's we're pretty good. The pros to CDs and DVDs was that they could store a lot more data than catridges at the time and we're extremely cheap to make. The Switch supposedly has a 64 GB catridges in the works which could hold more than even a duel layered Blue Ray (though there are quadruple layered Blue Rays that hold 128 GB but they aren't common.) The problem with cartridges is there price as they have always been really expensive to make, Blue Ray's are really cheap to make.
Basically CDs and DVDs would scratch like crazy but Blue Ray didn't. However with cartridges are even more durable than Blue Rays and they load much faster than Blue Ray's, they just cost a ton more.
The Switch had to go with cartridges due to it's size, also a disc reader would drain the battery faster. I am happy that the Switch uses catridges, I just wish developers would order the bigger ones.

It was an add on, not a full console. I don't know why the prototypes were all in one, but I don't think they ever planned to sell such a system on the market. Sony wanted to receive almost all the royalties from CD games. Nintendo would still get 100% of cart games and SNES sales. Even if Sony had it their way, their add-on would still be dependent on the SNES.
I never heard about Sony wanting the rights to IPs. What games/series were they?

You are conflating two separate projects that came out of the deal, both of which were prototypes: the Super NES CD-ROM, which was meant to be an add-on to the main SNES system, and a separate standalone console called the Playstation, made by Sony, which was supposed to be a Hybrid that played both discs and SNES cartridges right out of the box.

  • @cest_en_faisant_quon_apprend

I am not sure about that conclusion. It is equally true to say that Nintendo working hand to hand with sony would have entaled Nintendo to be slowly "eaten" by Sony. Regarding the true story that is Sony discretely tried to make Nintendo sign a contrat that was completely to Sony's advantage. From that point of view, Sony was very sneaky and maybe Yamauchi was totally right to make that descision. You could rename this video in "The descision that saved Nintendo from becomming a little part of Sony" Would that be good? Well i think in the end things are doing pretty well For Nintendo AND Sony, so no real mistake in the end...

So, sadly, anyone who tries to develop home brew games for this unit (you know it's going to be clone consoled at some point) they won't be able to make said proverbial Starfox CD game.... UNLESS.... they do what SEGA did (32x). Simply make a game cartridge that contains the necessary APIs, Chips etc... and the CD will have complete access to the necessary resources. MaxDowngrades sure. Competition breeds excellence. But Nintendo would definitely prefer to be on top of the gaming world. Believe me. When it comes to home consoles (the market Sony actually cares for) it's 3 out of 4 for Sony. And every time by a large margin. The Wii was a success but both Sony and Microsoft weren't that far behind. I doubt that the Switch will come close to catching up with the PS4 when it's all said and done. I think, depending on how long Sony wants to keep it alive, the PS4 could scratch on that 100 Mio Mark. The Switch will be a huge success but I think it's current novelty status will fade eventually.

Video game consoles are ridiculously expensive and tremendously risky undertakings that draw the vast majority of their profits from the licensing of third party software, to the point where Sony doesn't even bother making making money on consoles sold and actually loses money on each sale.
Sony wanted 100% of the money from licensing third party software. Nintendo would have needed to be stupid to agree to such a deal.

Sony goes on to dominate the next 3 out of 4 home console gens. I wonder how things would be different now if Nintendo and Sony stuck together. Would the SNES CD be a hit? Would Sony and Nintendo continue to work together? Would they eventually merge into one massive Japanese electronics/gaming giant?
