    You know, usually you get the feeling that a runner loves the game he's practiced so hard on but this guy doesn't know what the second item in the game is for, nor does he seem to know the names of the levels.

    The commentary at 15:56 is not completley true, because when you put in the white crystal you can see the moving blocks at the beginning of dungeon 1 *nerd motion off* :D

    This game took me a month to beat. Without Nintendo Power Magazine I think, I never would have. That tornado part and the garlic in the graveyard hung me up if I recall correctly.

    GDQ is an entertainment exhibition, not a competitive arena
    Simon's Quest starts with massive amounts of grinding, a very RNG heavy one that can lead to resets
    The use of the password was to skip potentially 20 minutes of literal pointlessness that would have driven viewers away
    He's not claiming this is a legitimate run to be put on leaderboards, he was
    just skipping the boring bit to get to the entertaining bit for the
    viewers

    I have a question. Is it possibile going back to the first area of the game with the tornado (using the red crystal?). I've tried to use it in front of the opening of the dungeon where the tornado leaves you but nothing. Supposedly, I forgot a part of Dracula's body (the eyeball). I've only the rib, the heart and the nail. Thank you!

    Seems like getting the sacred flame and using that to stun lock Dracula would have been even faster than the holy water.

    I'm sorry if it's inappropriate to ask this here, but why does the AVGN method (throwing the flame to immobilize Dracula) not work in this instance?

    • @Zendariel87
      @Zendariel87 Před 6 lety

      Pretty sure the it damages dracula way slower, it seemed if you got the holy water kill at first possible point it would have taken about 2 seconds(ended up takin about 10 and that probably is still way faster than the flame), i'm also not sure if he even had the flame in the run.

    Fantastic example of everything that can go wrong during a live speed run attempt. This is why all the other runners get anxious and remain so focused. It could very easily end up like this.

    this game honestly looks boring as hell compared to all of the other castlevanias.
    In fairness, it has some really amazing music though.
    Also, props to the runner for being persistent on this run. I can imagine it was pretty stressful to do in front of a whole crowd.

    • @MrRobosquad
      @MrRobosquad Před 7 lety +3

      The first Castlevania can get old only because it's short and relatively easy. Never boring though. It's like saying the original Super Mario Bros. is boring.
      For reference, I played it for the first time last year, after playing Castlevania III (my favorite) and IV prior.
      II, on the other hand, is boring. I get what they were going for, but the way they designed the game means it's devoid of challenge outside of figuring out where to go (which also isn't THAT hard as long as you find the hint books, and the ways in which it is hard aren't rewarding like, say, the original Zelda).The only difficulty stems from trying to complete it faster and with fewer game overs for a better ending, but that requires you to basically know the route from the start, so then you've removed the exploration/hint-finding aspect. It's just really ... not well thought out. If they'd required less farming for items, increased the difficulty of the enemy placement between mansions, and used the mansions as opportunities to have level-design and bosses on par with the difficulty of the other Castlevania NES games, it might have been something cool. The mansions really should have been closer to the dungeons in Zelda II.

    • @larrywolf2509
      @larrywolf2509 Před 6 lety +5

      It isn't boring.
      What most of you forget is that in the time of no internet and cluebooks, this game came into its own. It's a mystery. Every kid buying Simon's Quest had to figure it out themselves and that was the draw, it was a game of riddles and experimentation.
      In an era where everyone knows how to beat it, of course, it looks boring, but in 1987 with no help, everyone loved trying to figure out the way to Dracula.

    • @krackatar
      @krackatar Před 7 lety

      Joseph Jackson You can only use one password there certainly is a password for stage select but I doubt there's one that gives you a chain whip, holy water, and sets you in the right place so yeah.

    • @metae.4256
      @metae.4256 Před 7 lety +4

      A lot of these old games have passwords for nearly every possible combination of relevant material, including ones that it would be physically impossible for a player to ever see without some kind of outside tool. I would be more surprised if this game, with it's relatively big passwords, didn't actually have the password for "...a chain whip, holy water, and sets you in the right place...". Of course I could be wrong and this game might not have a big enough password format for that...
