The damage taken in the water level makes me so uneasy. Bad childhood memories
I can relate. I only got past water level like a few times and then died shortly after. This game made me go crazy.
@@gameragedad8953 same... why did we never think to take damage on purpose? I guess we took more damage climbing up the dam interior... a few of those jumps were SOOO frustrating!
I like the clever use of purposefully taking damage throughout this game... Sometimes to avoid certain enemies, sometimes to make long/difficult jumps easier, sometimes to skip entire sections :D
Also a lot of clever use of boundary breaches, especially in that last level! :)
It's a mind-torturing experience. This game is for prisoners
@@thaMANSTA I agree. I loved/hated this game. Never been able to complete it. Sadly his rushing through and taking damage on purpose resulted in him getting further and taking less damage in 5 minutes then I ever could
Yeah, it was the worst. Let alone the enemy unfairly pops up while going for a platform. This and Castlevania II were the worst offenders of that at the time. At least as far as (in)famous games of that generation goes. Honorable mention: BattleToads, though that had a lot more going on with why it was so difficult. Water-levels...the bane of video games, even now. Super Mario Bros was tough at times, but nowhere near that shit.
This guy skipping all those pizzas was totally stressing me out.
I remember the underwater section because a friend of mine couldn't get past it at all ever and for some reason i had no problem getting it everytime so one day he came around to my house and i watched him play up to the water bit, he gave me the controller and i did it for him and then gave it back to him and watched him play the rest of the game and he was like eyes glued to the screen loving seeing the rest of the game for the first time and he finished the rest by himself that night. We always bring it up when we see each other these days. Memories!
I had so much trouble with this game as a kid. It was awesome to watch a pro playing it.
I was a pro as a kid with this, not now not sure if its the fact im older or I play on a emulator but I could beat the game without losing a turtle even do the dam section hassle free (trick was to keep moving and know the correct order and if health gets low switch out) couldn't get past the notorious sections when I played twice in past year, the sewer jump, the walk over gap, and died at the dam!

I completed this game on my Amstrad when I was under 10 years old. I can't remember exactly how old I was but I remember still to this day how good I felt beating Shredder. My childhood gaming is why I still love 2d platforming.
I remember playing this as a kid, i was like 4, and it was disappointing because i loved TMNT so much, but this game was impossible. I remember through sheer willpower i got to the technodrome, beat it, and then my game froze during the screen transition.
I didn't play it ever again. 4 year old me was crushed. Games used to be stupid hard guys.
I did also have TMNT 2 the arcade game for NES, and that game was fantastic, and was probably the first beat'em up i ever played.

I've never seen the end of this game, but now I realise how close I was as a kid. If I only gave it a few more tries I would have beaten it!
Tobias Östh the only way I did it was to load up on scrolls on all 4 turtles from one of the buildings and spam them.
I beat this game a few years ago thanks to save states. Finally, after 30 years or whatever. Loved this game as a kid but was dang hard.

Raphael's only purpose in this game is to be the one that takes all the damage so that the other turtles can continue on with the game.

I cant believe how close I came to beating the game when I was a kid. I almost finished it, I died on that final hallway every time.

Ooooh, so when they were talking about submitting it to speedrunners after glitching/gameover and the mouser battle they were joking. Good joke. :P
I only mentioned it down here because there are *so many* comments bashing the runner for disrespecting donor incentives by using glitches. It could be that English isn't their first language, and they're not picking up the sarcasm, so I pointed out the obvious.

I dont think I ever saw past the level when you drive the van. This was my first "hate" game

This was the first game i ever owned, nice to see where it all began.
I finally beat this game 6 years ago and vowed I would never suffer through it again.
Completed this when I was 12 when first released in the UK so proud my mates where so amazed lol.
This game had no save feature, so you would have to play from start to finish if you wanted to beat it.
I always liked leo, he has the 2nd highest range, but also grear coverage, hit basics attacks hit all around him
So going slow involves having to confront more enemies which results in more damage. So if I rushed through I might of actually been able to complete 40% of the game.
This may inspire me to give this game another shot. I finally added beating this game to my "bucket list" a few years back. I don't know how many hours I've spent playing this game since my childhood.
Man TMNT got me into gaming back in the day when I was like 5. I learned how to beat the game by calling a 1900 number for gaming guides or something and my mom spanked the shit outta me when the phone bill came back at like $1300. Ahhh. Good times.

You're probably referring to the Nintendo Power number. I called them 1 time for the code in Star Tropics and my mom flipped out over the charge - which is funny to think about now considering it was only like $6.

After beating the likes of the soulsbourne games and such, I thought I had become such an experienced gamer that I could return to one of my all time favs in TMNT and perhaps beat it in adulthood...

This was my favourite game as a kid. Remember getting it for my 4th birthday!
I really enjoyed this TMNT as a kid. I was in 5th grade when I beat it. There was only one other kid at my school that could beat it. He and I would challenge each other to speed runs over the phone. Super fun times.
That was awesome! This was my fav game as a kid. Took me weeks to finish. Other friends all gave up on it. What a blast from the past and done with almost effortlessness 👌👌

WOW, I remember renting this game a bunch of times (never owned it), and I never could get past the water level by the dam. This is the first time I've ever seen anything past that. When I tried playing it recently I killed every turtle in the first level lol. So damn hard.

Get to 12:22 and get stuck for 4 hours
In the original PC version of this game, this was as far as anyone could get. There was an impossible jump there because one of the blocks were farther apart.
DarcnessTrophies You are absolutely correct! I was watching this, waiting to see how he got past that damn jump. Then he does it, with no fanfare and no issues whatsoever, making me feel even worse!!
I like this speed run. I enjoy the commentary and tidbits that whitman mentions. More vocal than most speed runners. Im enjoying watching other games than the usual supermetroid/sotn/ and link to the past that i always watch
He has the rare dry, quiet charisma that I enjoy listening to during a speedrun.

Nice to watch this. I have beaten the first turtles game at least twice many years ago. I died alot but i was disciplined enough to keep playing the game.

My butt-hole puckered just a little bit as he was navigating those collapsing walls in Area 4. Those two rooms stop a majority of my attempts to beat this game.
This game was hard as balls for me as a kid. I still liked it, I just never could get past the part when you get the Turtle Van.

I played this back in the day it came out. This game tries your patients to the limit. I eventually gave up on it.

There's actually one more weapon that doesn't get the boost- boomerangs. YES THE SPECIAL WEAPONS HAVE POWER BOOSTS TOO.

Love the Eastman/Laird Shredder sprite in this game.
I enjoyed the commentary. I didn't know about the health/atk boost...this game was sooo hard, but I loved it cause it had redeeming qualities. Like being open world for the day, being able to switch characters and having extra weapons like stars
Kind of hilarious how easy Shredder is, may as well be the first boss lol. Him getting knocked back on hit, you can do all kinds of cheese, and basically never have to move.
I never defeated Shredder, those weird astronaut guys with the lasers in the narrow hallways of the technodrome were always too much for me :(
I had to grind at least 60-80 scrolls from Level 3 to beat the game. The Technodrome fight was cake with the scroll weapon! But that hallway tho.. each astronaut takes 2 waves to kill, so you go through them like water.
Yup, I couldn't get past the astronauts until I read in Nintendo Power what their patterns were. Only after that could I get up to Shredder, after which I pummeled him with scrolls from a safe distance.

My brother and I could never get beyond the technodrone. We always thought that was the final boss.
Isn't it funny how we set these barriers? We think it's the end and want to savor the difficulty; the obstacle overcome.

I'm seeing a lot of praise for this guy's skills at the game. Rightfully so. But, what I thought about through the entirety of this video. People donated money to a charity and incentive to see the game showcased in a "glitchless" category. But, he just couldn't do that. Going on and on about the glitches of the game. Glitching of course. There is no way I'm alone in thinking this.

The cartoon had more mass appeal than the comic, so they went with the cartoon storyline.

I always took the easy way out to kill Shredder by kneeling on the top right platform and throwing any weapon. Shred jumps up, I hit him, he falls down. He jumps back up, I hit him, he falls back down. Rinse, repeat lol. I think you can also stand there and swing Don's Bo too. Slower, and not really something you'd do for a speedrun, but for a casual player just wanting to clear the game, you can't lose with that strat, and after getting to that room, the last thing you want is to get killed and have to do the Technodrome again.
Never could get through this! Ridiculously hard!
