I like that a game that came out a good three decades ago can still evoke this much joy and happiness. ^^
In case you're wondering, the bird knight things are called "fokkas." I figure that the blue ones are the mothers.
BaufenBeast lmao
@@johnnyace2287 Yep. The "Spicy Chickens" are actually called Fokkeru.
Word
I always pronounced it "foe-cause" with emphasis on the 'ka' part to mask how it sounds bad.
All I have to say to those things is "Fokka You!"
You all make it look so easy. Thank you for all your time invested.
I like how the game gives you a preview of the final boss after you beat each dungeons boss by showing Link's shadow while the boss dies and the screen flashes. It's the only time you see his shadow as well, I think, besides the end of the game.
I never even noticed that until you pointed that out, good catch!
You do during the fall screen transitions too
The Death Mountain warp is crazy!! Ive played this game for nearly 30 years and never figured that one out. Definately adds a new challenge to it. Great run Error72!
Great playing and explanation by ERROR72. Really enjoyed it.
I am Error...😊😆
Great run and good explanations! The only thing I didn't get explained was what characterizes a "No Scroll Lock" run.
This was awesome. Great commentary ! Throughly enjoyed. Thank you
Yooo, i had ZERO clue that THAT song from Smash Bros. was the Zelda 2 Palace theme... i am floored.
I just love how one of the donation comments was "don't while fighting Thunderbird" and the runner guaranteed that wouldn't happen...and finding out why was incredibly amusing
Nothing short of just mind blowing. I thought i knew this game like the back of my hand but i have been shown I have much to learn. Never dared to play through with no candle.
I always look forward to a Feasel Zelda II run. Have to say it was cool to have him on the couch while Error72 ran an amazing game.
I've always loved this game and never get tired of watching someone destroy it - such an awesome run. One thing about this game is that I'm always surprised it never get its due credit for being the game that really revolutionized the "New Game +".
Just beat this game yesterday after 20+ years. Zelda 2 is such an awesome damn game! Play it now and beat it! It is such an awesome feeling, taking this beast down!
Billo1281 I saw the parrot in your icon and had to check you out Make more Paco videos!
This game gave me serious problems as a kid. I beat this game for the first time a couple months ago. Well worth the work!
In my opinion Zelda 2 is the best Zelda ever. I don't understand why Nintendo didn't try to use back its concept. Maybe because it's the most difficult opus and doesn't suit to Nintendo video games philosophy.
i just bought a new fancy gameboy and am working on getting the hammer.... I'm so stoked.... Never owned this game, but always was around it growing up. Lagged too much when i tried to play it in an emulator.... Worth the money. So sick
Really awesome run Error!!
Error72, you are real hero! Love this run, so entertaining.
I love how enemies exploded back in the days :)
That Thunderbird skip was epic! Nicely done!
As a kid I could never figure out how to get the candle so I eventually figured out how to see the enemies feet in the floor, so I was able to get through to the other side. I didn't know that the game had a candle until my friend told me that it he,led for a puzzle and I just look at him and said "what candle?" I was half way through the game at that point.
You da man
That's great 😊
just listen to the townspeople
Sick run. Love it. Has to be one of the harder games to speed run.
Awesome run! Great to see Feasel there too.
Man I love playing Zelda II but even more watching people just straight up murder it on speed runs!
This run is legendary.
This one is the only one I need.
The armoured beam-shooting enemy in the last temple is "fokker" in japanese.
14:27
"what happens if you stick your sword above you? mnneeehhh"
i fucking died that is like tim and eric level of awkwardness and i love it
I remember back in the day training myself to fight Shadow Link straight up. I knew about the corner, but didn't want to use it. It's the same reason I didn't use the kode in Contra
You can cheese Shadow Link exactly like you would cheese Dark Nuts
Holy shit, I remember those blue knights, Holy shit does this bring back memories, even clap My f'in two hands and I rarely do that to any game. A+
Just beat this game today on my NES Classic Edition without save states. Such a fulfilling feeling beating this beast of a game!
That was awesome!
Badass Run!!!
7:46 glitch town is actually a clone of the left side section of the town you learn the fire spell. Though the NPCs that appear in glitch town are different, based on where ever you trigger the warp glitch.
This game made me so angry as a little kid, but i still love it. Thanks for destroying it. Awesome run.
Nice run!
I like how in the Zelda you could grind a bit if the enemies were too difficult initially.
Love this game
By far the most difficult game of the Zelda series. A great challenge.
@Stimulator7 Breath of the Wild can actually be pretty hard, but Zelda 2 still takes the cake.
Zelda 2 is just a nightmare to play casually, dodging all these enemies, attacking and defending at the right times can get very tiring and getting a game over in it is very easy. Something I never saw in any other Zelda game, and I've beaten all the 2D and 3D Zelda games to know that. Zelda 2 is also a platformer and more RPG-like, so it's very different compared to other Zelda games.
@@cloroxhammer3289 I know I'm late, but when you say you've beaten all the Zelda's does that include the CDI titles?
That big bot scared the crap out of me as a kid the first time I played the Grand Palace
Me too! It's like the same reaction you get from a horror movie jump scare!
That was impressive!!
Always loved the random cemeteries scattered for no reason throughout the game.
Is that why the bridge is there to get to Death Mountain? I always thought you needed the letter to give the guy so a bridge appears and you enter Death Mt. from the north.
Had no idea that you could get to the River Devil without a raft. These guys must have at least a thousand hours put into this game.
Is it possible to fairy past the Great Palace's force field? I tried as a kid but always fell a pixel before getting past.
I just watched oney play this, and ihad it on my wiiu. Never knew how in depth you could plan your shit like that. Already thinking like a souls game where i do a vitality/magic/attack only builds, or base stat builds.
ive had this game for 30 years and havnt beaten it and this guy does it in under an hour
Same here, bro. I'm using an NES Classic and saving the shit out of my game and still having so much trouble.
Garmaggio Dominations Took me three whole days with save scumming to beat the game.
The best strategy is to grind exp right at the beginning
sounds like you didn't buy the strategy guide...
kavika13 oh I had Nintendo power and all that. I just suck
@@garmaggiodominations432 en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Nintendo_hard - there's a reason that term exists hehe. I think I had to come back to it 6+ times before I beat it. I never finished SMB 2 (either the Japanese or US version)
I don’t even play Zelda, and I find this entertaining.
Duckfist, Feasel, Sinister1, Klaige, PJ, Mitchflowerpower
Off the top of my head, those are all the best runners I remember from when I first started watching speedruns (not to say they dont do GDQ at ALL anymore, just less).
Those were the days.
Oh! And that dude who ran Super Mario: Lost Levels.
I'm sure Im forgetting tons of other cool people too, but oh well, GDQ is full of 'em
I still can tear through this game.got my original nes. Gold cartridge. Still 30 years later can beat it beginning to end. But never this fast.
nice job!
I never knew the fairy could pick up items!
Anything you don’t have to stab to pick up can be picked up as a fairy. So in the North American and European version that means anything except P-bags, keys and magic jars.
and underrated Zelda game. I loved it. It as its dark atmosphere.
I finally beated it this year on a gameboy advanced. lol
man this game seems so ruff and hardcore compared to part 1 no wonder I never got it but now I must PLAY!
And it turns out the makers were ashamed of it...I always liked it better! GOLD!!
is there anyway to do the up + A shortcut in retroarch or another emulator?
"Gannon-dwarf" is funny af
Second best Zelda after LTTP. Fun run to watch.
The in-game hug was only matched by the hugs on the couch
43:37 You can down thrust through him if you aim for his belly. Kills him almost instantly.
Nice to see this beat because as a kid me and my brother just wrote the game off. We decided that while we could do it that it wasn't fun to do it. So moved onto quite a few other games. Which kinda says something because we'd rather play the first three megamans as kids than this game.
one of the hardest games ever made
Just beating zelda 2 is an accomplishment
Awesome run and very informative. Brings back memories.
Watching this gives me anxiety lol
I like most all speed runs but I get extra enjoyment out of ones where a game that frustrated me as a kid is obliterated. Makes me feel some sort of revenge lol.
Anyone a lunk to this image with overworld enemy movements based on their relative position to lunk? :o
Anyone notice how much Error72 sounds like Harold Ramis ??? It's almost an exact replica.
when did he get the down thrust? he didn't go to that town yet
He did at 14:21
Amazing :o
Holy crap! I had to see this to believe it, and I still don't believe it! When a friend (who's into all the MOBAs and newfangled modern stuff lol) told me speed-runs were a thing, my first thought was, "okay, maybe for Super Mario or Donkey Kong, but not Zelda II!" Now I grew up playing Zelda II and love it, but OMGosh it's fokka brutal! All those iron knuckles (and later fokkas) firing beams like machine guns, all those bots and bubbles and other cheap shots near lava/water, Thunderbird and THEN Dark Link, I could go on and on and on... I love it but nowadays if I decide to pick it up again I know I'm in for a long weekend! I could probably beat it in a weekend, but you just skated by in under an hour! Of course glitches are a big part of that, cuz you definitely skipped some huge chunks of the game, but you still beat the game! Way to go! :)
PS: I wonder if it really is pronounced "fah-kah" in Japan (and what it really means) lol
fun fact. According to speedrun.com/Zelda_II_The_Adventure_of_Link#Any_No_Scroll_Lock this actually beat his PB in this catagory
One time I beat the dragon palace without the key only using faeries and my wits. I was seven years old. No CZcams, no guide, no word of mouth. I was the man. Even made it to the final dungeon but couldn't open the door. That was probably the only thing preventing me from beating the game.
35:14 A SWEAR WORD A SWEAR WORD!
so if he would have beaten the world record if he hadn't been Fokkeru'd over?
Most of what I remember was not getting the gems at the end of the temple until way later... and going to a swamp and using turbo to kill endless enemies to max out....
great game, ive always liked zelda 2 more than the original
I'm not a speedrunner and I'm really confused as to how he's skipping those encounters as a fairy near the end of the run. I tried to do it myself but I can't figure it out. I would look it up but I'm sure there's a term for what that maneuver is called but I don't know what it is. Can someone explain, please?
They explain how it works at 31:30
I know this is older, but can anyone describe in more detail the fairy glitch he used at 31:30 ?
There is an invisible line at both the beginning and the end of the screen for each regular subarea (so not in palaces) that marks the boundary. The way the game is programmed, if you pass either of those boundaries while going left, you return to the Overworld *before* the square where the area starts, and if you pass them going right, they send you to the next square after in the Overworld. The point is, it doesn't check if you're actually at the beginning or the end; just which direction you're going in. As a fairy, for some reason you can do a couple of one-pixel taps and pass the beginning boundary line to the left without exiting the area. Then you go right at full speed and it "warps" you to the Overworld in the spot you'd be if you'd properly completed the subarea.
my younger brother got this in the christmas of 89. had tons of fun and i got the first 5 crystals placed but didnt find the hidden palace until i got the game again in late 97(since the game went missing around 91). so i thought the great palace was for the final crystal at the time boy was i wrong then. but i figured it all out and beat the game within a week in 97.
One of the few Zelda games that I've never finished.
its ok i liked playing this one as well its still fun
Nathaniel NIZARD I call bullshit. Zelda 2 is widely recognized as the most difficult of the series. Or are you some sort of video game prodigy? Or you used game genie?
Yes. I literally came to this comment section just to see if I wasn't the only one who also never finished this game. I remember I just gave up after a few months and accepted I would never beat it, but I still respected it to a degree and occasionally played it. But I have to say, that fact made me dislike this game more than all the others in the series, for obvious reasons. I remember I regarded this game as kind of depressing. I also didn't like the side scrolling action. Well, at least I get to come here now and finally see it done all these years later. Grabbing popcorn now
Finished it yrs later in my mid 20s. As a child couldmt beat the final boss. Had no Idea after him was shadow link. I escaped with my life with one health bar and jump and slashed him thank god.
@Brian Paquin Never conquered that beast TMNT hard game couldnt make it 2 Chrome Dome. Couldn't manage my health right. Techno was Hard asf.😠
Aww, why couldn't Error meet himself?
Wait, there's a Zelda 2 randomizer?
almost had that hero slime around 27:00
man oh.
I wonder what this guy's time would be if not for the "up and A"? The strategy for leveling up would be different as the original pacing of the game is being used. I think I would be more impressed with a "play and react" as opposed to some one who has memorized all the game triggers. But either way this guy is really good and has mastered a classic.
As far as I know, the only no up+a this guy runs is the 100% all keys category. His best time is 76 minutes. But as the name implies, that category requires you to get all keys (door fairying isn’t allowed), all spells and all containers, so naturally it’s a lot slower. The any% no up A category that simpoldood and pro_jn did a race of in another GDQ takes about one hour.
If you could get through death mountain then you were on your way to beating the game, for 2 years I couldn't get through death mountain so I paid my friends older brother 5$ to get me through, the rest of the game was basically a piece of cake. Another year later I completed it all from scratch just because buying my way through that part of the game was always stuck in my head bugging me. In opinion one of the greatest Zelda games ever.
Too bad Nintendo won’t make a 3D Zelda that implements mechanics from this gem. Levelling up, upgrading weapons and needing a candle (lantern, torch) on at all times to make your way thru pitch black caverns sounds awesome. I may be one of only a few people who genuinely enjoyed Tomb of the giants in dark souls.
"missed the key, RESET"
What does "no scroll lock" mean?
NaturalTvventy Scroll lock is a glitch you can do which prevents the screen from scrolling left in caves, towns, (and possibly palaces too, I’m not totally sure,) so by walking to the right for a bit and then back to the left you can leave the cave and the game will interpret it as if you have walked through the whole cave, meaning that you can go through most caves without having to fight anything, and in towns it can wrong warp you to all sorts of places, which lets you skip most of the game. No scroll lock means that that particular glitch isn’t allowed, but other glitches is.
With all the crazy glitches I've seen in games, why is this one banned? Does it just make it a cakewalk or something? (I've never played Zelda 2)
@@staticklingon2182 Like the poster over me said, there's an any% category which does allow scroll lock, and that allows the game to be beaten in under 20 minutes. With this category you get to see more of the game so I think GDQ decided that it would be more interesting for the viewers, and with scroll lock, many of the screens looks like a garbled mess.
*Skips Thunderbird*
Me in Shelia Broflowski's voice; Wha, wha, WHAT?!?!?!?!?
It felt like they reUsed sprites/backgrounds for Zelda 2 from Super Mario Bros 3.
The song is the same as Motley Crues "Looks That Kill"
Best Zelda ever. Fight me
After months and months, and months, of playing this game as an 8/9 year old, then an older one, I finally made it to dark Link. Never beat him. My game crashed on me eventually and I never felt like doing it all over. Shit, I remember having to leave the Nintendo on for days to save it before I knew how to change cart batteries.
Now I see this video. Wow, this dude is freaking amazing at this game. It almost makes me angry watching him breeze through this 😎 does the second controller up A work normally or is that a hack??
52:40 'Spicy Chicken' Fokkeru
Imagine if Zelda I and II had an SNES Zelda All-Stars version
Sean Cone as far as graphic style goes, there is BS Zelda. Part of JP Nintendo satellite game thing they did. It's weird though.
The vector field.
Really great run, and this Zelda doesnt look so bad like most people refers at it :/
It's not as hard as some people say.
I can't believe the only other time nintendo try anything that resembles the depth of this games attack options its skyward sword doing simon says. I don't know enough about the game, but it doesnt look like there are any items compared to other zeldas, but if they combined this level of combat or thought about combat to the utility of the zelda items. Shit would be incredible.
Just play dark souls
@@scantyer it's not even remotely close to what he's suggesting
Not even phased by getting a new PB lol
Awesome run.
Btw I tried to do the Healer Glitch in Rauru, and ended up with the healer completely gone. After going out from the house on the right to attempt the glitch, the healer just never comes out anymore and I can't find her anywhere.
What could have caused that to happen? Is that known?
Linkenfant that's a rare thing. You were off a sub pixel
She disappears if you walk too far to the right when entering the door, to reset the glitch.
The guy playing sounds like Fozzy Bear
Is that idubbbz on the left?
Looks like Prez lost some weight!
Fokkeru is the name of those red birds
an hero jajajajaja adventure of link its my favorite zelda game :)
