'The Man Who Knits'

- Most new knitters start by making a scarf. The first thing this artist ever knitted was an Irish fisherman's sweater. Both unconventional and frugal¬ - and always up for a challenge - he sources his fiber from thrift-store sweaters and then up-cycles the yarn into new items, such as hats and blankets.
Some might know this German Village-area resident and realtor as EJ Jones, others simply as “The Man Who Knits.”
My dad used to knit some lovely sweaters & cardigans, in fact he actually died with the needles in his hands bless him xx
My dad knitted too. He knitted a red cardi for me when I was 6
Awww... He died with honor! ♥️♥️♥️
That’s really sweet
Lovely story.
My dad died with a needle in his arm…so pretty similar stories
It never occurred to me to recycle sweater yarn from stores like that! Now I can make even nicer pieces for myself and others 🤩

Neither have I. I had sent off for some beautiful dark blue cashmere of 6 balls which cost me close to $60 which a great deal, but I'm terrified to use it or I just don't know what pattern to work with it. I'm more a crochet than a knitter, but I think that I should use it for knitting. I love your idea of going to Salvation Army or Goodwill looking for used sweaters.
This guy does beautiful work. I’m an auto mechanic, mountain biker, bbq’er, husband and father, i love learning to make things with my hands, and i really enjoy knitting. I Just knitted some booties for our expectant baby girl. Two years ago i made a christmas stocking for my son using my grandmother’s pattern that she’s been using for over 50 years.
I’d love to learn to make sweaters with all natural wool. This dude is inspiring.
it's been a year since so you may well have knit a sweater, but the flax sweater by tincanknits on ravelry is a phenomenal first sweater pattern!
this lovely man just taught me how to save so much money. I almost started crying from the genius of it 🙌🏾
Same here!
A great idea. I'm in Florida so can't use wool but I'll see if I can find something else. Thanks.
i know right...imma do it
Yes me too. So awesome 👌
Me too! His hack is so simple yet so life changing
When he said natural materials like cashmere my first thought was wow expensive. Sweaters from the thrift store, what a great idea! This guy is awesome and his finished works are amazing.
I have been going to goodwill and Salvation Army for years, because I also love taking sweaters apart for yarn. I do not have a yarn winder, so I wind it on my thumb. Once you master taking them apart, it’s actually very cathartic.
My dad knits too. My nanna taught him, basically his mum taught him to knit in the 1950s when he was little. I have his teddy bear with a knitted cardigan on it he knitted for it when he was 6. 🙂
What a beautiful memory!😃
I am a male who has been crocheting since the age of 14. My first project was a purse I crochet for a classmate in junior high school. The purse was made from a old sweater. Crocheting is the one thing I enjoy during Winter. Thank you for sharing your story/video.
I admire the fact he can find anything we would consider “trash”, and he makes a treasure out of it.
My elderly mother has been recycling thrift store sweaters for years now. She makes everything from slippers to rugs. She turned 86 this year
No need to buy expensive natural yarns at the yarn store anymore-just go to a thrift shop, buy some wool shirts, unravel the yarn from the whole shirt & rewind into a nice big ball for any project at a very affordable cost-next to nothing for the cost of the yarn itself-a great idea for recycling & reclaiming the yarn!
I love this!

I'm a man (30) and I just bought my first knitting needles last week :) woooooooooo yet to learn but, woooooooooo
nice!! ^^
31 and just bought my first needles. Can't wait to start this journey.
Jonny M that's awesome!!!!! Good luck
How wonderful for you! Not only are you going to find a very entertaining activity but you’re muckin’ in with some of the best, craziest, most creative, loving and supportive people you’ll ever meet. Go on line and find a local knitting group that meets up periodically for learning, encouragement and snacks. Try your LYS. We’re out here, waiting for you!
Awesome! I have been mnitting since i was 8, but it is a great hobby!! Good luck there are a lot of helpful u tube videos.
I loved watching this video!! The fact that EJ uses natural fiber yarn purchased at deep discounts from thrift stores & then upcycles them into new items is awesome!
I’m a broke college student taking up crochet. The recycling sweaters idea is a great trick! Blessing and warm wishes 😊
Please change your user name, treat yourself with respect!
I tried to recycle old jumpers and its not easy. They don't simply unravel. I gave up in the end 😔
@@Haironu their name is trash CAN not trash can't
One time from broke college kid knitter to another: you can get acrylic yarn from Michaels that’s is 2-3 bucks for a huge skein
@@pkk639 Yeah, I think having something like a ball winder or maybe a swift helps, I think it also depends on the thrift stores near you.
You have to be pretty discerning when picking out a sweater to upcycle, and then it really just depends on what people are donating. I haven't had the best luck with this either.
Although, I have seen upcycled yarn on Etsy that's not terribly expensive, so that's always an option. This video though now makes me want to look for sweaters to recycle again. XD
That's resourceful to reuse yarn from store bought sweaters. You can get more for less.
WAY, WAY MORE FOR ALOT, ALOT LESS!!
I see 😃 !
you sound like a geico ad ✌

ruzzell907 best comment, ever.
right!
Good design for men’s sweaters
I don't know if this what "the best comment ever", but the like button was at 199 so my ocd made me hit thumbs up.
😂😂
Oh my goodness, you're a genius!!!! I've just started knitting and was shocked by the price of yarn. Your hats are adorable and your sweaters, beautiful!! Thank you for your insight and talent!
I’ve never thought about taking apart a store bought sweater from thrift for yarn. Totally gonna do this from now on. I love it 🥰
i am a male knitter and crocheter also... i like this video so much
Hi,l can provide a free knitting bags,if you want ,pls contact me
How hard was it to learn? I want to learn how to make sweaters etc like my grandmother used to. I am semi-retired so I have plenty of time. What is the best site, YT page or wherever to learn the basics and what kind of set up do I need to start? Needles etc Thanks for any guidance
My mom taught me when I was little and it only took a hour or two to get the basic thing down. From that point on you can learn new patterns and those will be either easy or incredebly hard. All you need to start is a pair of sticks and a roll of thread.
Mohy Atasi k
Scotto ThePoliticalHack I learned how to make my first sweater on Craftsy. I really enjoyed it and learned a lot. Good Luck.
This man knits really well. His finished products look store bought.
They look way BETTER than store bought!
Who needs store bought machine made ugly items when you can custom handmade it yourself?
@@marial.rapaglia4041 Yes! It's way more fun to crochet/knit it yourself; you can make it EXACTLY how you want it!
AG-Exactly & very true!!
Professional
I’m an 11 year old girl who is learning to knit. I have yet to start, but I have pencils which I could use as stitching needles🪡 . I’m excited. I find knitting fascinating. Anyway have a good day to everyone reading this 😄
Inspiring story--I never thought of getting yarn from used items at thrift store. Great idea!
I too love luxury fibers and never thought to hit the salvation army and other second hand/consignment shops to look for the fibers I desire. This weekend I have a plan!
Un genio
Were you successful? Just curious, as your comment was from 2 yrs ago. Was it fun?
Waoooo brilliant idea 💕Thankyou, you are my inspiration
@@cmkar8830 I didn't see your response, but yes. The trick is to go to the consignment shops in the really good neighborhoods as they tend to have the garments made out of natural materials instead of polyester and acrylic.
@@taccora No worries! It's never too late. 😁 Thank you for letting me know.
If this man was my grandfather I would be soo happy
Judith Ogboru I never knew this until my grandfather passed away four years ago, but he crocheted at one time in his life. We have a couple of throws he crocheted.
I'd also be happy if this man was my grandfather too.
My grandfather could sew! His father had been a tailor ❤️
His work is impressive! I never thought about taking a sweater apart to reuse the yarn, clever and resourceful guy!
This man is brilliant! I never would have thought of doing this!
My sons are 9 & 11years old and they love to knit and crochet. It's wonderful to show them other makes that enjoy knitting.
It's wonderful that your sons know how to crochet and knit. I learned to crochet potholders with plastic 6-pack rings in 6th grade and am still going! I taught myself knitting back in 2010
I 12 and I know and crochet, I am currently working on a scarf
Trina Mechling GR8. I have a 8 year old and I am passing knit/ crochet 🧶 skills in to him
That’s fantastic! It’s so good for developing fine motor skills in my opinion, not to mention you can make whatever you want with it!

Those hats are so beautiful and extremely well made. I knit too, and have ever since I was a kid. Recycling the yarn is a great idea.
Mika Koponen n
OMG!!!
he is sooooooo smart by purchasing from Salvation Army and taking them apart since yarn is VERY EXPENSIVE as he says.
I think I am gonna try to do what he does if I can find one close to my house LOL
I watched this in 2015, and started searching through Goodwill and reclaiming yarn as he does and making Christmas mittens for gifts from the wool. Sometimes I make a pillow, by sewing the front and back together and sewing it rectangle or square and stuffing it. Thanks for this video.
what a wonderful man- i am 56, male and knit also
Mark Judge that's great.
Me too!!
Are you gay (I'm not trying to offend I'm just asking entirely out of curiosity)
@@davidvilmin3457 are you gay? (I'm not trying to offend I'm just asking entirely out of curiosity)
@@kakexun nope and I'm not offended. I had 4 carpal tunnel surgeries in the early 80s and my doctor recommended knitting or crocheting as my therapy. The surgeries were related to sports injuries. Wasn't excited about it to start but found that it really is a wonderful way to relax and create new and wonderful things for my loved ones
Genius. My husband will be much happier if I start buying yarn like this.
you can redie it also I have done this when I could not find a color I was looking for I wanted a green-blue like the Crayola crayon color so went to my local thrift store(lastchancethriftstore.com)and found a white sweater that had a stain on 1 sleeve it was perfect for new socks. I have knit since I was a kid but this was my first pair of toe-up socksand yes my husband still wears them
mine too!!!!!! lol
My husband to lol
Funny!
Wow, he is very resourceful! I love how he recycles old sweaters into yarn! The things he makes are really neat, too!
What a fabulous range of hats, wonderful, thank you for sharing and inspiring me to keep knitting.
I am totally impressed by the effort you took at that age when you started knitting. It is quite an acheivement! Your sweaters look so professional and perfect. Hats off to you. May God bless you with health and peace of mind. Take care.
Thanks for showing how you knit. I like the idea of buying old sweaters and using that thread. I am also retired and can't afford to buy. you are so good at this. I am 84 and have been sewing crocheting, and knitting since I was15. God bless you
I love this guy. His creations are amazing.
My dad taught me to knit as a child, took it up again about 15 years ago after his death
I'm so glad I came across this video. I never heard of recycling sweaters for yarn. Thanks to this gentleman for showing me a more frugal way to knit and crochet!
The best part was when he says: 'I used to express myself through wine, now I express myself through knitting'. Lord knows best, he left one bad habit.
I love that he knits with natural fibres; and he sources them from recycled sweaters is a bonus! Enjoying natural fibre with minimal waste. 👍🏼
I am 15 and I love to knit! If there is a day when I don't knit it is a day wasted.
I love the idea of recycling thrift store sweaters! I have just gotten back into knitting and nice yarn is so expensive. This is a great solution. I will definitely try this out soon!
I WANT THAT SWEATER HE'S WEARING SO BAD!!!
my gawd same if someone has the pattern for that pls send
This is how my grandmother learned to knit when she moved to this country- now I am determined to try this method of yarn harvesting!
Like other viewers, I didn't know that you could unknit a purchased sweater. Good for you! Beautiful knits!
Really impressive, so great to recycle and this man’s hats look amazing. I’ve taken up knitting this year and find it mesmerising and very addictive.
Im a thirteen year old boy who teaching himself how to do the knit stitch for a scarf
No I am not joking
Reminds me of the good old times, I was 10 and starting to knit and crochet as taught by my grandma, and the power of the internet :) 7 years later, here I am, making stuffed toys, blankets, jackets, hats, scarves, gloves, and other wearables which look and feel good enough to wear :) What a journey
20 going on 80 taught myself to knit at 15 because I wanted a Hufflepuff scarf now it calms me
Good for you kid don't let anyone tell you to stop man just enjoy your hobby
Lovely! Yes, those Aran Sweaters will grab your attention plus they show off all the beautiful knit cables & honeycomb stitches. Great job Broad & High!
Thats great! I’m a guy and I started knitting when I was probably 10 or 11. Five/six years later, it’s my favorite hobby.
I was taught by my elderly babysitter in the 50s. Yarn was not available like now. She put used sweaters on her dress form and I’d unravel and wind. One day I saw yarn in a dept. store. Holy cow! Love your video. ❤
Loved this story! Unfortunately I heard the Goodwill ships the “good quality” donations to eastern countries throughout Asia, mainly China. So if you have trouble finding sweaters, that maybe why. Also manufacturers are using blends more now which is sad. I’ve had people ridicule me for knitting, even as a woman. So I’m glad to see men interested in this amazing art! Keep up your love of it!!❤🎉Thank you for your video!
He seems to be such a wonderful person. I wish him all the luck in the world.
I think it is wonderfull, a man that knitts looks really cosy, must be a kind soul.
The up-cycling! The money saved! Genius!!! Thank you so much sir for sharing your story!!!!!! I've rediscovered my love for knitting and crocheting but have felt a bit guilty about materials as there are so many clothes n waste... didn't realize how easy it is to take apart old sweaters and blankets! Thank you!
Mr. Jones, you are a magician! I love your hats!!!!!
wow i never thought of doing this. great idea!
Your work and creativity is lovely and inspiring. I too am from Ohio, had a small farm there in Southington, where I taught myself to spin wool. We had some sheep, and I even had a friend who taught me how to shear them! It is so soul satisfying to take something from nature and create something beautiful with it. I do many crafts still,-spin, weave knit, crochet etc. And you're absolutely right, the desire to create does give you a reason to rise with a smile every morning. Thanks for sharing,I never tried taking garmet apart before, think I'll give it a try! Happy Creating!
I grew up in Southington, maiden name was Wolf. Related to the Harshmans. I was amazed when I read your comment from a few years ago on making new creations from recycled wool. Just wanted to say Hi, hope you are still keeping up with the craft. I never learned to knit but think it is a beautiful skill. I will be 82 in a few days and this was a thrill to run across your comment.
Thank you for your kind words of encouragement! We could all use them!
@@joycefranklin8981 Happy 82 birthday.
Thank you for the Happy Birthday wish! It was a pleasant surprise.@@maybellfountain3606
My paternal grandfather crocheted several years ago, but I never knew that until he passed and his daughter-in-law gave us two throws he crocheted. This video makes me miss him a lot. I'm a Grandpa's Girl.
a lot of men used to knit socks in the 40's. Men were taught to knit socks during the war, or so I've been told. It was one of the skills taught to soldiers.
This is genius, I would never have thought of taking apart sweaters for yarn. I currently only crochet (and I'm still an amateur), but I'd really love to learn to knit.
Watching this as I knit and was holding a DPN between my lips right when they showed him doing the same. Inspiring to see how he goes about thrifting yarn.
❤️God Bless you Sir...Wonderfully Talented...With A Beautiful Kind Soul❤️
Simply inspiring. Please keep making instructional videos. You have something unique to teach us.
I never thought about taking sweaters and getting the yarn from!!! THat is an awesome idea!!
during the Middle Ages, it was a craft that only men were allowed to perfect. They would spend six years doing so, allowed into guilds of knitters only after passing a rigorous exam. Professional, guilded knitters were responsible for an amazing amount of clothing well into the 16th century. Once the knitting machine was invented, though, it became something that men didn’t need to do any more and women could take up as a hobby.
Sir, you have inspired me so much from your resilience. I got a little behind in my knitting because I crochet as well.
I had always wanted to learn how to knit
And after 17 years I finally found someone that taught me! I caught on quickly and I made my friend a scarf for his birthday and later I knit a two color scarf for a friends son in college. Thanks for helping me to rekindle the flame😃
I too really enjoy knitting with quality yarns like wools, cashmere and alpaca, and yes-- they are very expensive-- yet so luxurious!
I appreciate the tip on purchasing the wool, silk and cashmere sweaters for their yarn content!
What a great idea to reuse materials. I'm retired too and can't always afford new yarn especially wool. Thank you for sharing.
Hello EJ "The man who weaves", I like that name. I weave a lot for children, and I like to teach how to weave through videos on CZcams and although I do not recycle, I used many leftover wool in shoes, hats, scarves, berets, etc. I love your idea of recycling second-hand clothes and I congratulate you.
its knit, not weave lmao, it even says in the title and the video the man who *knits*
@@h0wdy_hey maybe they changed the name of the video lol

What a beautiful job, congratulations!
Omg what a talent! I admire this man very much, after a life of work he learns a new activity by himself, he recycles, he creates beautiful art, and he gives us a great example.
Love and appreciate men who are willing to express his creative qualities.
I have not knitted in years...since high school. I just got back into it and it's bringing my inner child out. If I become an expert at knitting more challenging items..I might just turn it into something more than just a hobby. The salvation army is a great idea to look for yarn. I find yarn to be too expensive..even at hobby lobby. Definitely going to attempt to unravel sweaters.
I wish there was an update on the man who knits....he really should have a podcast !
How adorable! I thought I am an excellent knitter, but hat off to this gentleman!
Bravo and congratulations! I am a knitter and have been been knitting since I was 5 yes old! This is the best relaxing hobby anybody would want!
Beautiful hats and sweater! Great tips, I am going to have to try this😃
I've never thought of using recycled yarn before. I'm totally going to stop at the Salvation Army my next day off to see what yarn treasures I can find.
I am so inspired. I am on a limited budget too, what a great way to recycle old sweaters! Great to see a man knitting.
Omgoodness getting sweaters from thrift shops and unwinding them is a stroke of genius!!!! 😍
I love the toque(?) You made and it looks good on you! If you don't want the wrinkles in the yarn, skein it then dampen it and put it on a clothes hanger then hang a weight from the bottom of skein, it doesn't have to be a heavy weight just enough to stretch the yarn out to original state, and leave it to fully dry. But you probably already knew that! In my spinning and weaving group here in Tasmania we have a number of men who spin, weave and knit, have you thought of learning to spin? Keep having fun. Cheers!
Bless his sweet li'l heart, I am very happy to see how this adorable gentleman takes the yarn from recycled sweaters, and do his projects with them! That's great!!
This is wonderful for people who like to do things with their hands are fidget. I tried knitting and life got busy at that time in my life so I forgot the basics but I want to try again. Now that I am a mom I can be crafty not having to worry about my son destroying craft stuff because I will have the wool right with me lol. At that time I used to always make simple sparkly beaded earrings. What both of those things helped me with was keeping my hands busy doing something productive instead of smoking a cigarette. This is really cool idea. It doesn't matter if you're male or female, knit your heart out! You're basically a clothing designer!
I recommend using a loom, I could never stay at it with hand knitting
I'm another guy who knits.😎😁 I learned to crochet by watching my older sister when I was in junior high school (L8 70s), and to knit from a volunteer at a hospital I worked at the information desk 1 very slow holiday. Conversation between a volunteer and myself somehow got around to knitting and I said how I'd always wanted to learn how. She said "I'll teach you-it's easy!" And she did. That was many years and items ago.😁
This is so cool! His story and ingenuity are inspiring. There is no excuse for failure! Love, love, love this knitter man!
I've knitted for a time now I am thinking of going back at it again. Love the bonnets they are a work of art.
I'm falling in love with this man who has a great passion, who does not have prejudice and who does not care about what people can say about his unusual passion (for a man). All my admiration to this great gentleman.... who, in addition, makes small masterpieces! Best success from Italy
Such a great story you tell - I never thought about using old sweaters to make into new items - Thank you for showing this
Omg,beautiful!!!
Got tears in my eyes!!!I have been knitting since I was 5 yo,then stopped for a while and started again after my first born.Keep up the wonderful work!!!
that is so neat and to see a man knit
Doh! This had never occurred to me in my 55+ years of knitting. Now I'm gonna go to my thrift stores looking for yarn to be recycled. My ball winder is gonna be busy.
I just loved him and what he does with all recycled yarns!!! Clever boy!!😊👏🏾👏🏾🧶💚
Very nice! A lot of people who retire from a career and do not have a hobby, a passion, must be bored to tears, cause there are 24 hours in the day.
Very cool and some good shopping tips, too. My dad knitted and tatted.
I knit and crochet but always wanted to learn to do tatting..

Wonderful, I had never thought that I could recycle. Thankyou so much
What a great story. Thanks for sharing.
I'm a crocheter and your channel popped up. Wonderful story on your knitter beginnings and I absolutely love how you repurpose luxe fiber sweaters into your own, exceptional luxury garments.
Years ago I used to recycle hand knitted sweaters for my carpenter husband, unpicking and re knitting in striped patterns. I never thought of using factory made sweaters. Now retired and living in the country I’m always looking for affordable hobbies. This way I can knit for the family, (rural and into recycling) that’s gifts for a while taken care of. Thanks for the inspirational, I will be looking at knit ware in the charity shops differently now.
Growing up, all the men knitted and especially in the army when they knitted their own socks. My uncles knitted me sweaters. Scotland ! When I went to college some fellow male pupils knitted 'fair isle' and even on the bus when all the old ladies would gather around and watch them.
