FAIR ISLE KNITTING: A Benjamin Burton Short Doc

  • This is a short documentary that covers a basic history of the Fair Isle, a remote isle in Northern Scotland with a population of around 50. It has a tiny population and always had, however, its had a massive impact globally within the knitting community. It is famous for its intricate patterns and amazing hand knit products.
This is the final product that I created for the College Colloquium Summer Research Grant from Willamette University. This was also my first opportunity attempting to create anything documentary style and I learned so much from it, looking back there are a million things that I would change but at the time it was created it was truly the best work that I could've created.
I would like to thank everyone who helped make this film possible it truly was the start to my film career!
Please check out and support Fair Isle knitters such as Mati Ventrillon at www.mativentrillon.co.uk/
Thank you to Willamette University for funding this project
David Altman for serving as an advisor for the project
    SOVA for providing all music
Finally to my mom for supporting me in everything I've done

Hi from PDX. Was watching "the repair shop". They mentioned in a spinning wheel segment about fair Isle, that wheels parts would be made from wood washed up from the sea, since there's no trees there.

Beautiful film. Thanks for doing it and sharing I am an old granny knitter and found the background music and sounds made the interviews difficult to hear. Using subtitles was distracting because of so many wrong words. Fair Isle was always printed as feral. But lovely and informative film.

Interesting vignette of Fair Isle - a place that has fascinated me and which I would love to visit. As that is unlikely thank you so much for this short doc. I did find some of the audio difficult to hear and while the music is atmospheric, overlaying it over speech was distracting. I so wanted to hear all that was being said. A lovely and much appreciated visit to Fair Isle.

I LOVE this video. It was so entertaining and instructive and introduced us to a part of the world few of us will ever see. As an avid knitter, a lover of Shetland wool and semi-skilled at Fair Isle knitting, I was enthralled throughout the entire video. My only comment would be to lower the volume of the music (or delete it entirely) during the interviews. It made it difficult to understand the heavy Scottish accents. Thanks for sharing your talents with us.
