Theres a whole ass layer thats a Simcity which you then see exists on a floating panel in space with Earth chilling behind it, which the damn level music is synchronized with the reveal
The singing of Ella Fitzgerald, interrupted by a solitary *fuck* , while killing the final boss has got to be one of the most epic moments you've posted lately. I wasnt even playing but I felt like I beat the game right there with ya. Epic
5:30 LOL Double KO. Tie goes to Mike! What happened was: when you die, your debris does damage to enemies and the death doesn't register until your debris disappears from screen. So the boss actually died and level was cleared before Mike was dead. So not only did the death not count because of that but you got the 1-up from defeating the boss. -LinkToTheShaft▲
He had 2 lives so he lost one, exploded, killed the boss, and respawned with his last life. So it wasn't frame perfect but whatever, don't tell Mike. It's all he has left. lol jk
When I watch Mike Matei Live playing "Shmups" I went out started buying myself some "Shoot em ups." Now I really enjoy it more and more, that I never got into shooters back in the day.
GG! I haven't beaten this game in decades (literally). I bought this on the Wii Virtual Console and couldn't beat it, so I just had to remember the good old days when I beat it back in the day.
hdma, which is just drawing each line with customizable offsets. Anything with stretchy effects, the way the floor has a faux 3D scroll in Street Fighter, wavy effects in water levels, etc. Axelay stretches the background in a vertical rolling effect just enough to create the illusion of depth, but it is only compressing/stretching one way. If you did that on the Genesis you wouldn't have the colors to create great texture and the transparency layer to make the horizon fade into the atmosphere.
Beautiful game, but the collision detection and gameplay is horrific. I think this game would play so much better on the Genesis, minus the beautiful graphics. The Snes CPU just can't handle this game well.
So this is not related, but I've been playing this game called Everspace 2 and it's really quite good. It's sort of a arcade/RPG, simple and intuitive. You shoot, loot, level up and upgrade your ship, there's jobs and exploration. I think you'd enjoy it.
Schmups look interesting, but as blind as I am I cant play them. Bullets are too tiny. Gradius on the NES, when it was new, was the only time I could deal with it as my eyesight wasnt too bad yet
I hope you played the Very Hard Mode, because it's the only way to see the real ending. I beat this game last year for a Playthrough Video, but could beat it only on Hard Mode.
Mike is the reason I went out and bought all the SNES shmups
Awesome music in AXELAY. The Colony stage is my favourite, and the stage looks good too.

this game still looks great today but at the time it looked mind blowing
I still remember reading about it in game magazines and thinking the crappy CRT screencaps they featured looked amazing.
Gamefan was the best mag@@CopiousDoinksLLC
@@dashdeception I used to be really into Mean Machines, lol
Very underrated shmup. Especially the kick ass Konami soundtrack.
To die when the boss dies.....i laughed my ass off you got it. cheers ya lucky bastard!

Link to the Shaft! You’re a legend on the stream!
Mike is the man

I just got in to shmups in the last year or so and It's my favorite genre right now. so much fun!
Have you ever considered that you might be shaking because you need some sunshine?
I would burn.
Best shmup on the SNES.
i prefer space megaforce
@@mikematei Even though there are other better Aleste games?
We have Space Megaforce. Maybe a more pure shooter, being a caravan, but Axelay is more epic by far, and very playable.
FULLL... EPISODE!!!!
This game is insanely hard on the highest difficulty setting.
I’d do it again on a harder setting later. Love this game.
Hellfire next?
42:15 That sounded very jazzy. Perfect for a romhack. Axelay: Benny Hill Edition.
Furck yeah BEST SHMUP ON THE SNES
20:02 Mike drawing 2 dongs on his whiteboard.
This video is hilarious! Thanks Mike!
I really like the lighting and colors on the final boss
Mode 7 God = Pilot Wings

this was AMAZING!! ❤
*37:06*
Yes sir!
some of the backgrounds with the pulsing lighting effect looks real nice
its okay. not my favorite at all. But theres so few shmups on snes I decided to do it.
Drawing Time is cool, hope you do more of that.
That frame perfect boss finish lol.
Watching this made me think that AVGN's character was based on Mike, which would make Mike the OG AVGN or something.
at 29:13 LOL.
18:48 Haha whoops dropped the controller! 😂😂😂😂
I thought for the longest time this used mode 7 for it's effects. Axelay doesn't use mode 7 at all, it turns out

It STILL looks good
These compilations are GOLD...and I love how much effort you put into making them
Will he ever play Hotline Miami?
Whats up Mike! START SCREAMING! 😂
55:13 Hah, what a drama queen. I laughed my ass off.
Congrats on the 1 Credit Clear!!!!!

I bought The Wizard of Oz for SNES just to have you sign it one day.. How much would that cost me? ☺️
I could never get past the first level but I didn't try too hard because I thought the "3-D" graphics looked like donkey shit
yeah i dont like how it looks either
0:18 where can i buy one them

Mike...have you heard about the zelda 2 enhanced pc edition??? If you haven't then you should give it a try.
I like playing Zelda 2 on my crt and nes. So i go for ones I can put on an everdrive usually.
I wonder if there is a link between this game and Streets of Rage because of Axel and Axelay.
👍👍
sweet, reminds me or soldier blade and super star soldier
100$ is kinda expensive for a door stop Mike.
$100.

Blue skies!
Is the input replay on this game bad or is it just my emulator? The controls feel sluggish whenever I’ve tried to play this game
Good. Now do it on Very Hard! har har har har
(Yeah you unlock a Very Hard difficulty after beating the game on Hard)
I like I RIM.
Do you like Garfield?
it is called a SHOOTER
Yeah it is. Then when I say that, they think I’m talking about a fps. So if I say shmup, there cant be any mistake.
i dont know i just really hate that stupid word...your channel your rules its cool you are doing pretty good with your streaming@@mikematei
Shmup's are exclusevly for space ship. no ship its a Shooter then, not FPS s
Love u mike..im a male btw😅
Mike raging when he found out Justin Silverman was his replacement* compilation
you know what nes comercial i like alot? 11:49
what do you think of soylent?
I eat a lot of protein, fish, chicken, fruits and vegetables. I never eat soy.
