While it is true that some artists don't have substance, I don't think that's a negative thing. The birth of hip hop was block parties. Keyword, PARTIES. Back dat thang up is a song with no substance, yet it's a cultural classic for over 20 years. Lil Jon, The Yin Yang Twins, Diddy, T Pain, Plies and etc have catalogs full of hits with no substance (they might even have some with substance) and we still live that music and most of them still have careers. Substance is a thing and if you wanna beat Kendrick or Drake caliber rapper, you'll need it. But it's not necessary and you can still have a successful career and be loved without it.
Substance or not, it is 'just' music. Anyone can make something have substance and that doesn't change what tf it is. Coltrane thought he was channeling god through free jazz, it was different, people hated.... it was still just music.
