The War Against Entropy

  • Modern culture assumes a constant upward progression; that things just naturally get better and nicer and more technologically improved over time. The Second Law of Thermodynamics teaches the opposite; that order will descend into chaos and decay. So where does technological and cultural improvement come from? How do we get order out of chaos?

Technically, he's still wrong. Work doesn't "beat" entropy, it actually creates more of it due to inefficiencies in the process. As an EXTREMELY simplified example, consider a bouncing rubber ball. If we drop it from a set height, it will never achieve the same height as the energy of the system is lost to both heat and sound. You can pick up the ball and return it to its original height, but in the process, you are also performing mechanical work and are losing energy to inefficiencies in the process. Technically speaking, anything you do (including this conversation) is going to cause entropic losses, and it's honestly kind of silly to ascribe moral value to entropy, because if it's "evil," then evil wins in the end.

I’m a type 1 diabetic… today I went to my doctors appointment after putting it off for a while, and things were okay… but not as great as I had hoped. I gained weight and my blood sugar control wasn’t as good as I wanted to be… and it hurts knowing that these setbacks are a result of my own inaction and refusal to take responsibility for my own health. I have allowed the most important thing in my life to entropy… but Issac is correct here, even in nature there are second chances. This was exactly what I needed to hear right now. Growing strong and preserving that which preserves life itself takes work and energy, but in the end it’s always worth it. I’m going to correct my mistakes, and undo the entropy that I have allowed to set in while I still have the time, energy, and strength to do it so I can preserve my life and see to it that my legacy isn’t a graveyard full of boats.

Tons of videos out there about emergent behavior of structures, of "order", from many many particles obeying very simple rules. Imagine the structures that will form from far more complicated rules, rules such as highly coupled enormous systems of nonlinear partial differential equations. (PDEs) And, strictly, entropy has nothing to do with "order", as there does NOT EXIST some well-defined quantitative definition of order. Even check wikipedia: it defined entropy as as a measure of energy NOT available to do work. (Of course, entropy and energy have different unit, hence, why "as a measure of" is in there)

Some people would argue raw nature is chaos and a civilized bustling city is order.
Other people would argue a city is chaotic, and nature is peaceful and in order.
The goalposts can be completely flipped based on opinion, and not even a moral one.

Entropy has a specific (mathematical?) definition, and it is the measure of the amount of microstates per macrostate. The more microstates there are that can represent a given macrostate, the more entropy that macrostate has. The 2nd law of thermodynamics is that systems in thermal equilibrium takes on the macrostate which has the largest number of microstates.
For example, gas molecules that fill the entire container will have many more microstates than if the gas molecules are all clumped to one corner of the container leaving the rest of the container a vacuum. When the gas molecules are clumped together, there is less space per molecule, and therefore fewer configurations per molecule thus fewer microstates. For a gas that fills a container, each molecule has more space - it can be at one end of a container or the opposite or anywhere in between, each position representing a different microstate. This gets compounded as you start including other molecules and their own available configurations.
An analogy is there are more permutations per combination in rolling ten 6-sided dies than rolling ten 3 sided dies. Each dice represents a molecule, and each side represents a state. The dice with more sides is like the molecule that has the freedom to exist in any location of a larger container, whereas the dice with fewer sides is like the molecule that is confined to a smaller container. Combinations represent macrostates while permutations represent microstates.

Negentropy is the word for things becoming more orderly. It takes constant work, but each action can be small. Walking from the kitchen to the garage to leave? Take the opportunity to empty the kitchen garbage or to carry that screwdriver you used from the kitchen counter back to the tool chest. Going to the office? Take the stairs and get in a little cardio on your way. Park at the back of the parking lot to get in extra steps. Listen to an audiobook on your drive. There are lots of ways to take small actions that add up over time to fight entropy. Great video. Thanks.

I don't think you understood the point Bill was making. I am not sure what you thought he was saying, but I think he was just saying that we can be tricked into thinking certain things even with very clear visual/physical evidence. His point was that we need to continue to use science to understand our world, lest we be tricked and wronged. I don't think he was trying to explain entropy or make a point about it at all. Someone link me full context if I am missing something outside of the clip.

Amen, sir. We are imperfect slivers of a mighty intellect no matter ones belief or faith. Mankind is burdened with the horrible knowledge we are capable of greatness and creation, but as to our individual lives its time ill-attended is limited.
God directs us to work hard, strive for order and honor Him by creating future generations.
Be a light shining in darkness, and thank you for this video.

Bill’s demo is a good example of religious faith: Just because you can’t see something, it doesn’t mean there’s not a power _you can’t understand_ that’s moving things toward a higher purpose.

Order does not come out of chaos, as demonstrated by the example. The example has an absolute order imposed upon it, called physics. Each particle within the system obeyed the rules of physics at all times, it only _appeared_ to be chaos, it was not. The mere fact there are highly regulated 'beads' in a hyper specific solution impugns the very premise there is chaos.

Bill Nye used to run a show targeted at teaching kids *very* simplified scientific concepts. Now he runs a show aimed at teaching adults more nuanced, more detailed, less simplified scientific concepts. TREX LABS and the Botkin family, it seems, prefer the worldview made for kids. Turns out that pretty neatly sums up their moral positions, too. Being a grown-up requires more of us.

Saw a perfect example of this whole concept the other day. There is an island in Charleston harbor that houses a fort called Castle Pinkney, it has been abandoned for decades and has mostly washed away some estimate that the shoal will be gone by the end of this decade and the once mighty fortification by the end of the next. Another example is a beautiful ship named The Spirit of South Carolina, she is all but abandoned left moored to the dock to waste away whilst the owners decide her fate.
