      Thanks for the video. However, I must say, and I have said this before, your portrayal of these 20th century battles are not as fun nor as interesting as the way you had portrayed battles in centuries past. I think the problem lies with your excessive details on the topography, the symbolising of troops with chess pieces, the excessive details on the position of troops, the numerous names of places and people mentioned, the number of episodes required to cover each of these minor wars (as opposed to a major war like WW1 or WW2), etc. These details would be forgotten even before the video has finished playing.
      It seems like all that effort in the details is for naught while the pleasure in watching the videos is diminished because the viewers have to wait for 15 - 20 minutes x 4 - 5 episodes (over several months) when a single or two 20 minute episode would suffice and be more fun! Similar issues had affected your episodes on the Battle for Greece, The Thirty Years' War and The Korean War.

      And they had counted well how many men they needed in making a road block, holding back even a division, if not with artillery and planes. Then the initial bigger force freed to other missions. They could be split to smaller task forces, who didn't need to face a bigger enemy, but a local force at a given road section. Finns might even be in larger numbers at certain break points, or even with smaller force, they made hit and run strikes to wear out the enemy, then form road blocks to a weak spot

    You know it has to be Finland when a k/d ratio of 4.500 to 13.000 feels >almost< like a defeat. They got to be the best warrior people of the 20th century, doing all this even without airforce and tanks!
    Also a honorable mention to the poor common soviet soldiers who might have been in one of the worst situations of the war, next to Americans on D-Day and Germans in Stalingrad.

    • @Mandemon1990
      @Mandemon1990 Před 3 lety

      I would correct that Finland did have airforce and tanks. Tanks at the start of the war were... well, they were basically useless. Some old Vickers with MGs and FT-17s, which were useless even again Soviet T-24. So most Finnish tanks ended up being looted from Soviets (Finns are basically Orks when it comes to looting anything useful.)
      Of course, both airforce and tanks were horrifically outnumbered compared to Soviets, but Finnish airforce did achieve similar lopsided K/D as the groundforces did. Only breanch of FDF that didn't achieve lopsisded K/D was navy, mainly because Soviets didn't even bother.

    • @arrowsarikoski9740
      @arrowsarikoski9740 Před 2 lety +2

      Only one of the Finnish tanks was equipped for battle. The rest lacked sights or guns and were thus unusable. But yes, Finland did have a bit over a hundred planes, which were slow but still something.
      I think it’s important to remember that so many ”coincidences” happened in favor of the Finns which made the country’s survival possible. For example the fact that both countries used the same caliber in their guns, which meant that the Finns didn’t run out of ammo within the first couple of weeks.
      In old Finland people feared God much more than nowadays and he allowed them to be spared. I don’t think the modern generation would manage nearly as well.

    I don't know who will see this or know, but my grandfather (from my father's side) fought during the Winter War 1939-1940 at the Karelian front. My dad has told me stories about what he used to tell people about the war during that time, he died sadly before I was one year old so I didn't get to ask him myself anything about it or the following.
    Anyways, he told that his group was sitting one very dark night at their campfire. It was very, very cold, the fire extinguished shortly before his group heard voices in the distance. It was the russians, both sides prepared to fight each other in close combat (mind you, it was in the dark with noone seeing anyone). Nobody knew who was stabbing whom, you could possibly be stabbing your own friends for all they knew, and my grandpa made the wise decision (although may be seen as a coward's way of escaping the battle), lived to tell the tale about this gruesome, horrifying battle by fleeing, not knowing if any of his friends survived.
    What saved him from continueing in this war and future wars (The Continuation war and the Lapland War) was a grenade that split his stomach open, he would recover and later on meet his future wife there, caring as a Lotta for him at the hostpital at the time.
    In late 1944, when the Lapland War started, one of the towns that he lived in called "Enontekiö/Hetta" was completely burned down by the germans, he helped rebuild the town church there and was always recentful to the germans who came to Hetta for tourism. Apparently he used to say that every german should pay (insert number) for every metre that they step on in Lapland.
    He died in January 1999, in the freezing cold of -51 degrees celcius, during the coldest ever recorded temperature in finnish Lapland. His death was caused by going outside and we don't know what really happened, but he didn't get back inside the house ever again, freezing to death on the snowy ground. R.I.P. Aarre Valtteri Laakso 04.11.1922 - 29.01.1999. You are not forgotten by any of us! Thanks for reading this!

      @timomastosalo Před 3 lety

      It's not surprising: This was a sideshow in WWII, only interesting for the Soviets and Finns in the great public. Some Soviets wanted even to explain Winter war as a separate thing not part of the WWII. Though it was a 'pre-empive strike' - they wanted to 'secure Finland' that Germans wouldn't attack that way. Officially - on the other hand the Soviet regine amazigly took or tried to take what Russia had lost in WWI. So what else was new?
      The thing is: Finland wasn't allied with Germany at that point. Soviet attack made them seek the German help. Before winter war, Finland had hoped helped from France and UK, and they gave some promises, but didn't deliver. Only UK allowed a few volunteers to join. They trained winter warfare first, then they served as ambulance drivers - they were so few, was it a company or so. But otherwise Finland were left alone: Italy sent maybe the most amount of material help, Germany didn't. Then there were some help from Norway and sweden - Sweden allowed some volunteers to fight: more than the Brits, and they saw real fight. Later UK & France + Norway got problems of their own - and then for Finland it was Germany or the Soviets.
      Finland remained democratic - so didn't become One Nazi/Fascist-party country. Finnish Right Wing extremists (IKL - 'Patriotic People's Union/Alliance') had failed a coup in the early 30s - they were marginalized. Social Democrats, National Alliance & Center Party were strong: so the moderate left and right with the center - who in Finland has usually been the voice of the country side. The extreme right and keft were a no-no in most Finns' eyes: the most devoted Finnish Communists had defected to Soviet Union. Well it was just across the border. And they were not natipnally minded - the most radical of them sincerely believed thay could join the whole world to the Communist dream.
      Stalin sort of killed that. Finnish Communists were disillusioned there - some went to North America, thinking they could build their Socialist/Communist Utopia there. Some were killed as spies (in the country of their dreams which they thought they could build!? Note: I'm not a Communist: most of us Finns were 'Soviet vaccinated' not to catch that.), some 'only' send in Siberia. Think that happened to Anerican Communists too in the Soviet land Funny world.
      If the attcak against Finland in 1939-1940 wasn't recorded as a part of WWI, then the Soviets nice look like the good guys - victims only, who turned heros. Which they of course were in relation to Nazis - I'm happy they won them. Just as a Finn I remember well, that thing were not that simple.
      Most of the West had their hands full with Hitler, Hirohito & Mussolini (at first). And they needed the Soviets with the Nazis, so it was more convenient to forget afterwards this attack. And after WWII, they had to actively ward of the Soviets themselves. Don't remember how long the honey moon of the WWII winners lasted.

Note as well while Stalin may have "won" on paper/political means the Finnish Army was not defeated in the Winter War nor the Continuation War.

      @bige1106 Před 3 lety +14

      @@AlexKazakovaxkazakov Ahhhh I see the propaganda, you are getting ahead of yourself in this history, well lets do a little history research, Winter War indeed could be considered a pyrrhic victory for the ussr, one that for sure hurt their reputation, however Finland did remain a free nation, nothing anyone would have bet on at all, the west had for the most part written Finland off to the ussr, luckily Stalin did not know that at the time and was actually worried about western intervention, that was very lucky for Finland. The Nazi "ally" does not work as Hitler had stabbed Finland in the back with the M-R Pact since at that time Nazi's and ussr commies were allied together, or as I say the two devils that started WW2 in Europe together. Hitler as well figured Finland would be annexed by the ussr in 1939. Remember Finland was virtually alone in their fight for survival.
      Now on to the Continuation War, when it looked like Germany was not doing well and would not defeat the ussr, Finland was already negotiating through in roads by the USA with Stalin starting in late 1943, however Stalin would have none of it In early 1944 Finland was requesting an agreement again, however Stalin's reply was unconditional surrender, that was not going to be accepted by Finland. Stalin amassed an offensive s large or larger than the D-Day Allied landing against Finland in early June/July 1944, Finns had major defensive victories in Tali-Ihantala and Vuosalmi and other smaller one later. By end of July 1944 Stalin realized the Finns had plenty of fight left in them and that annexation would not be possible without more build up of troops and time, of which Stalin had neither as he decided he must reassign his elite troops to the Eastern front and on the race to Berlin, so for a second time Stalin cut bait and would agree to an armistice in Sept. 1944, hardly waiving the white flag as you state. Finland would go onto remain a free nation, however as the saying goes no good deed goes unpunished, Finland's good deed of saving itself would come at a high price s there is no way Stalin would let such an embarrassment to the red army go unpunished and the gall of the Finns to dare to stand up to the ussr! So nice try to spin this, however as I have stated many times before the Finnish Defense Forces never were defeated they stood their ground and saved Finland and that reality has made all the difference in the future generation of Finland, including me!
