  • Tiktok is the world's fastest-growing social media app.
But the U.S. and some Western governments say it allows China access to private data and is a security threat.
The company and the Chinese government both deny this.
    So who should we believe?

One of the guests (from Europe) has obvious bias that "US is good and China is bad" , which makes the discussion less useful. Using Apple iPhone for example, all iPhone users of China which put their personal data over Apple cloud take risk that US government may access these data through some kind of backdoor from Apple. A solution to it is quite simple : all data from China iPhone users are stored in a local cloud owned by a parnter of Apple locally. It is why Apple can sell its phone in China (but Huawei cannot sell its phone in US). As for Facebook , if FB agrees to follow a list of rules /regulations in China, FB can operate in China. FB decides not follow these China rules.

The fundamental problem with TikTok is that it offers a MASSIVE AND ALTERNATIVE PLATFORM for people to express themselves. Two keys words in term of propaganda operation: MASSIVE and ALTERNATIVE. If you analyze the "opposition" voice in Western societies, they are usually fringe voices or groups at the margin. The MAIN propaganda operators are owned by MASSIVE CORPORATIONS and have MASSIVE presence in every aspect of life. So the "opposition" voices are there to re-enforce the image of "FREEDOM OF EXPRESSION" but it is irrelevant if the voices are ignored or not having enough penetration to the public mind.
So when TikTok shows up as a MASSIVE entity that can offer people with different voices a platform that can penetrate deep into the public mind, it creates a serious problem for the Western governments. There is a BEAST that is NOT within their control!
TikTok, no matter how separated from Chinese parent company, is fully aware that its origin. And it will, at sub-conscious level, be friendly to China. And as such, might create an ALTERNATIVE view about the world that is UNBIASED. This is very unlike its other MASSIVE propaganda competitors that were created with a very BIASED view about China. So an UNBIASED MASSIVE entity like TikTok toward China, turns out to be very dangerous to the BIASED entities that have a monopoly over the public mind. The public might wake up! Scary! LOL 😁

Ms Kreps mentioned the age limit in Singapore and wonders, fairly so, if that points to a privacy issue.
Living in Asia, I can tell you that regulators here, to the extent they enforce such age limits, is primarily because they do not want kids to spend too much time on social media or even their iPhones. In the case of Singapore, specifically, it IS because of that AND also because the government there has always been a nanny to their citizens and hence also wants to control the kinds of contents their young are exposed to. But take China for example: Tencent several years ago was compelled by their regulator to limit the amount of time Chinese kids could access their platform and that was because the games were too addictive. So, to answer Ms Krep, no, privacy issue is not always the primary reason that apps/platforms are restricted in China or Asia.
