Why I Broke Up With Coffee & What I Have Instead

- Coffee and me have had an on and off relationship for many years now, but I think I am finally ready to say goodbye. This was actually kind of hard to admit for me but I can't deny how it makes me feel. I actually got so sad making the intro skit to this. Let me know your thoughts below. How do you think you metabolize caffeine?

Using caffeine for energy is like a credit card. Eventually you'll have to pay it back, plus interest.
Perfectly said. That's exactly how I felt until I gave it up. My paybacks were usually made on the weekends, after a coffee fuelled week at work.
urgh.. that is so true, i love coffee a lot but rely on it like a crutch and pay for it later...
A caffeine high comes with a caffeine low.
dammmmm
Best are 0 caffeine drinks.
Dont get used to that crap in the first place.
I quit all caffeine 2 months ago after a 20 year coffee addiction. I feel relaxed and more emotionally stable
This video just made me realize that coffee has been triggering anxiety and shortness of breath for me! Definitely going to stop
I wasn't aware I had anxiety it really kicked after using it
How’d it go?
@@armandogonzalez0814 lmao clearly not well because I drink coffee daily 2 years later 😂
This is true
@@kaylanichole5972 😩
THANK YOU !!!
I had that same afternoon anxiety...mentioned it to my lame doctor who asked me if I wanted to “talk to someone”....good grief.
I saw this video, quit coffee which was brutal for 3-4 days....and the anxiety is GONE.
coffee is a legal social drug, just like tobacco and alcohol. I am coffee and tobacco free since 50 days. yay!
Yes, luckily I was never a smoker! Best of luck friend.
@@Simnettnutrition Thanks, I went alcohol free 4 years ago, then I became vegan, getting rid of tobacco and coffee gave me the hardest time. Great video & good acting.
Congrats!
I would have to add sugar as a socially legal drug to that list. Sugar is added to everything and addicting!
I went cold turkey with coffee and asked Google what to expect. It was said that I should prepare for a headache .... maybe......... They werent kidding!!! I NEVER get headaches at all . Took 7 days for that to subside. The nearest I get to caffeine now is cacao powder:) I wont look back.
I have been coffee free for the last year! my digestive system had improved so so much and now I finally use the true energy my body produces instead of that quick burst of energy that coffee use to give me creating a lot of metabolic damage. So often I had to increase the amount of caffeine to feel the energy until my body started to break down and I had to stop coffee to recover from the process. My Sleep had also improved so much! Coffee is a drug to me that I was addicted too. Not being able to trust my own body's ability to create natural energy is what coffee caused me. I have peers that can't function if they don't drink 4 or more cups in a day... this is sad!
Coffee does same to me, tightening of the chest, shallow breathing. It’s called anxiety! I quit all coffee about a year ago and still miss it.
Try teccino (herbal "coffee") or dandelion. This is the only thing that helped me stop coffee AND not miss it. They sell it on Amazon and it's amazing!
I almost got teary-eyed, I'm realizing that my days with my beloved coffee are counted but I'm still in denial.. Seeing you go through this difficult break-up and how understanding your coffee was, gives me hope... I need to have the talk soon...wish me luck
Unfortunately, I got coffee pregnant. So, even if we break up, I still have to pay child support.
those beans wont grow themselves.
It is normal to see drama with vegan society.
I'm so glad I never started the whole coffee thing. I don't even know what it feels like to depend on that boost that coffee gives people.
I literally gave up coffee a week ago and then found this video 😲 I’ve switched to black tea and turmeric chai for a natural lift, I’m struggling with strong cravings though as I’m a senior Barista in a local coffee shop and I’ve gone from around 6 strong coffees a day to none 🙈 I can already feel my digestive system slowly recovering... thank you for the encouraging video!
Did you stick it out?
I am exactly the same way. Coffee makes me anxious later in the day. And I feel like something bad is gonna happen. It is good to hear that it happens to other people as well. Your vid helped me confirm that coffee has been affecting me in my emotions and feelings. Crazy! Thanks for sharing!
Thx Derek! Could you do a video about alcohol? I've heard in a video of yours that you don't drink anymore, I think many ppl could benefit from your experience! Keep up your nice content, bro!
Correct I don't drink anymore. 5 years or so now. I will definitely try and cover that in the future.
@@Simnettnutrition Awesome, thank you!!
Yes i am 22 and never had alcohol but want to start now. Should i or not can u please make a video please
@@if6436 You make it sound like it's a choice for life.
It's not like you either drink alcohol all the time or don't at all.
Just try it once and see how you feel, just always make sure it's an occasional thing.
Ofcourse it's horrible for your insides if consumed too often, but once in a while can be really fun and not too harmful.
That's the way i look at it anyway.
It's about what you do day in day out that matters for health, not what you do occasionally.
@@GrahamandMatthew the benefits of drinking alcohol are outweighed by the damage? What benefits?
I have the same feelings about coffee! Love the taste, love the buzz but it gives me anxiety, super high heartbeat especially when I’m relaxing or going to bed and I’m laying there trying to fall asleep and I can literally HEAR my heartbeat
I forgot to add that I broke up with coffee too but after 4 months we got back together 😂
For me: caffeine makes me euphoric for about 3 hours and then a bit drowsy for a few hours and then depressed until I go to sleep. I do OK with decaf coffee or very weak green tea but overall feel better with no caffeine at all
I don't feel depressed but I'm definetely drowsy with very Low Energy once the effects of the caffeine wear off
Decaf is bad for the kidneys because of the process

Wow I can relate 100%! I will get anxiety and try and open my chest up and consciously take deeper breaths! I thought I was the only one!! Great video bro!
Crazy eh? Not a good feeling. Glad to hear I'm not alone.
Same. Coffee makes me feel terrible. I avoid it completely.
I even drank some green tea yesterday and felt similar effects 7 hours later Haha so no more caffeine for me, atleast for now!
Same for me, dude... and I know it, and I'm still a caffeine junky.
I feel you bro you gotta do what you gotta do lol!
LOL THE INTRO IS AMAZING
I wouldn't go that far😒
Made me crave coffee for a minute lol
Came here to say this 😂😂 it’s like a short story!!!!
Happy to see this video. Coffee had a negative impact on me over the years and I finally quit. It was rough at first but now I feel a million times better and have such a healthier morning routine.
I was the same way, coffee made me sluggish and anxious. I'm a natruly high energy person, and I had to give it up just to feel energized. The withdrawal was terrible, so I knew it was bad for my body. It may take a few tries to give it up, but it is really worth it. 👁🙏👁
I recommend Rooibos Tea. Quite potent and NO caffeine and lots of antioxidants 😉🍵
Yea that’s a good one, especially loose leaf.
Thank you!!💜Just ordered💗
My favourites are Camomile tea, Lemongrass tea and Peppermint tea. I like the Fennel, Anise, Cumin blend, too.

I replaced Coffee with Crack, it's much stronger 👌
I knew coffee was a gateway drug.
its much more relaxing, isnt it?
It's more difficult to find
@@brescalofrio1 meth is a more accessible choice if you're trying to kick the coffee habit but don't want the bother of locating crack. Or green tea. Either works.
Crack is wack.
After drinking coffee all my life, I gave up caffeine during an especially stressful stage in my forties where I was feeling extremely tired, anxious and brain fog. It was the best decision and I feel sooo much better without it. As a substitute I drink a lot of herbal teas, sometimes some caffeinated teas and sometimes black decaf coffee. Love your videos and spirit! 🌸
Amazing! I want to quit coffe too. I noticed 1 espresso a day is ok, but 2 or 3 for 2 days and anxiety starts kicking in. Plus lightheadness. I never thought about it, I'm sure it's because of it! I wanna try a full reset. What do you drink instead?
Thank you for this, Derek! I recently gave up my daily coffee habit too and as much as I miss it, it's worth it. It was also giving me bad acid reflux/heartburn as well as the anxious symptoms you mention.
That intro was hilarious. 🌱🌱🌱
I gave up caffeine all together and I feel AMAZING!!!
Banana Man 🙌🏼 word!
Also gave it up. It was contributing to my anxiety and I feel like a new person. Drinking more green tea.
I replaced morning coffee with MATCHA Green tea, so good!
Haven’t watched the video yet, but I saw the title and read “Why I broke up with C...” and my heart sank, and then felt relief as my brain finished the title😅
Now, onto the video!
No no, not meant to be click baity oops! Never with that.
Ahaha same
That was more my stupid brain moving faster than my reading ability 😂
Barefoot Bry probably the caffeine 😂😂
I can only imagine how you and crystal must of been cracking up laughing trying to make that opening scene... lol
She left on me! Haha, she went to yoga! It was just me and I had some laughs for sure.
@@Simnettnutrition Hahahaha that what I was thinking, I would not be able to keep a straight face with my girlfriend watching me. I was thinking maybe she is there and then I was like yeah no way, Mr Simnett laughs a lot :P
Love it, love the quality, love the honesty. You are making this a better world.
Great video and information. I was laughing through most of it. Thanks for making it entertaining. I have stopped drinking coffee regularly because I felt anxious on it as well. But it’s nice to hear the science behind it. It confirms what I was feeling. I really appreciate how relatable you are. Your diet and lifestyle are my goals, and yet you make me feel like it’s ok to mistakes too, you just gotta keep trying toward those goals. Your an amazing coach. Thank you.
So glad you made a video on this!! Thank you Derek 🔥
I've been trying to break up with coffee for ever. Just can't bring myself to do it. I just don't feel like coffee could survive without me.
You do have to think of all parties involved for sure. ;)
I remember how hard it was for me when I wanted to stop drinking cappucino. I was addicted. Only one cup every day (rarely 2). I was drinking it like this for about idk 5 years? But it is possible and I am really happy that I never get addicted with coffe because I see people around me how addicted they are without even realizing it.
@@Simnettnutrition How were you able to do it? With it looking at you like that. Looking up at you with that big brown eye.
Haha!
so good, same feeling lol
Thank you for this video, Derek! I metabolize coffee slowly. I had to stop drinking it because it would make me feel paranoid and have cloudy thoughts. I only drink tea now and haven’t had the same experience I had with coffee.
Thanks so much for doing this bit of self discovery and for sharing it with all of us. I can relate to a lot of the content in this video, having struggled with anxiety my entire adult life. This helps, a lot.
Two days in to cutting out coffee, the struggle is real.
I'm just coming out the other side of stopping caffeine! I have cut it all out except for the occasional sip or tea and I LOVE IT! I wake up so much easier, have so much energy consistently throughout the day, and so much less anxiety!
Been having exactly the same reactions as you Derek, love the taste, gives me energy but definitely makes me anxious and messes with my digestion. been having it occasionally but still haven't really made the mental effort to give it up completely even though in my heart I knew something wasn't working out between us.
Thanks for making this! You have given me many good reasons to go ahead and stop consuming it as it is definitely not worth the symptoms even though I love the taste and the occasional energy boost it gives me
Very nice video.
Great dramatic composition with acting, story telling and information.
I also like the skits you put in afterwards.
Thank you for this treat!
Hey Derek! This is a good advice! I was having anxious and panic attacks frequently caused by caffeine. When i stopped drink coffee the anxious automatically gone.
Thank you!!
I cried at that short film.
Yesss!! I'm so glad I found your videos... every one I see just hits home for me so much! Thank you!
The way you edited that intro is spot on with how I feel drinking coffee. I always say "after one sip of coffee I start sweating and I try taking my pants off over my head."
Love this! I've worked my way down to decaf but it's just not the same. Breaking up with coffee is harder that leaving a human relationship.
True! haha
Ha! Loved the beginning, Derek! I don't drink coffee daily, but maybe 2 or 3 times per week I'll have about 1/2 cup. I get the same feelings you do hours after even a tiny amount of coffee. It sucks because there's really nothing like it!
Totally agree and relate to this Derek! There’s something about coffee that I don’t want to give it up, but I know in my heart it is causing my already problem with anxiety to be worse. I am going to give it up for a bit as you suggest. Thanks for being you and putting out quality content!
Ahhahaha that scene with the coffee cup, I actually laughed out loud at the captions! Thank you for this video- I KNOW coffee is affecting me negatively and I know i am a slow metabolizer of it for all the same reasons you gave. I just haven't been able to give it up yet... But this video really inspired me to try it for a week. Thank you for making this!
I feel the exact same way, and those symptoms have gone away ever since ive stopped drinking coffee!
Dude thats so funny - I just told myself I need to break up with coffee, and then saw your video! Pressed play now but wanted to thank you in advance for awesome content as always - BIG love from South Africa 🇿🇦
Thanks for sharing this video! I started swapping tea for coffee after I saw a Josef Lincoln video a couple weeks ago in which he said coffee was increasing his anxiety. I appreciate you going into further depth on this topic, it's really helped and reassured me that it's probably not just a placebo affect that my anxiety seems way better when I switch to decaf or switch it out for (still caffeinated) tea. Much love!
oh no, not coffee 🙈 I feel you bro 💚 Gladly I don't experience any of these symptoms, it just increases my energy and I feel great 💪🏼
I gave up coffee recently as well. I’ve had to do this several times in my life. But I’m now old enough to realize it’s not helping. It makes my heartbeat really fast and serious anxious feeling.
I’m surprised how much better I sleep now and how much more energy I feel without it!
I quit all caffeine completely for over a year. Since then.... a strong espresso gets me very high! 🤣. Great acting by the way
i feel like these 2 statements contradict each other.
Thomas Mca how so?
@@chrishomer If you have an espresso every now and then you didn't quit all caffeine for over a year.
If you don't have an espresso every now and then how do you know it gets you high?
M.G. Ah I see. 🤣 no I quit completely for over a year, then started again. Using it as more of a tool now rather than an addiction
@@chrishomer Oh ok.
That's definitely the right way of doing it.
Just use it as a little pick me up when you have an off day or a really long day at work.
Been feeling this way JUST recently and it breaks my heart...THANKS for video. Thanks also for hitting on the mushroom "coffee", I've been seeing that lately and wondering the scoop. Thanks for product info too. Vivo seems like a great company...trying to choose
Thank you so much! This is so me! I've kind of known this for a long time, but kept on n on ignoring the (obvious!) signals. Thank you. Looking forward to more peace of mind and body! Tea isn't as disturbing to my nervous system either. Just a nice lift. Good reminders and tips.
This is great because I’m on my 9th day no coffee and I honestly wake up way better 🙏🏼
I definitely noticed coffee messing up my stomach and digestion, giving me cramps and anxiety too! It just doesn;t feel like a good thing to have
Me too- the exact same symptoms.
Wow, not even surprised that this video made it my way so I could view it. I've been going through an almost identical change myself. Thank you so so much for sharing your experience!!
Thanks for doing this man. I have never connected so much with a vlog as this one. You are down to earth and speak from the heart. I have been back and forth with caffeine, especially Yerba mate and coffee, for years. I believe it contributes more to my impulsivity and anxiety than any other factor in my life, not to mention acid reflux. I never heard of slow metaboliser until now, but your experience fits mine almost exactly. That crash and paranoia in the afternoon is killer, and I’ll have trouble sleeping even 12 hours after one cup of coffee.
Love it!! Coffee and I broke up, too! I feel so much better emotionally and physically; Less stress and more sustained energy! :)
Derek, I just happened to stumble upon your CZcams channel the other day, and I am so glad I did, because I am loving your videos! I don't know if I'm a slow caffeine metabolizer or not, but coffee definitely messes with my digestion, so I have switched to something called Teeccino, I believe it's pronounced tee-chee-no. It's available on Amazon and comes in a variety of flavors. It has no caffeine and no acid, so for those out there with sensitive tummies like mine, it's a great alternative. It comes in tea bags, but is dark like coffee and has more body than tea...in my humble opinion. Though I'm not sure if it has any antioxidant benefits, hmmm. Anyway, just another hot beverage option to check out. It's also great cold or iced like an iced coffee in the summer.
I've been caffeine-free for the last 5 months and it has been great for me. Good luck on your journey.
yes!! it sounds like you learned your optimal caffeine dosages. it's honest quite inspiring. love this video format thanks!
Yes, everything you described is me. I learned a long time ago I'm sensitive to caffeine. Back in my, I'm not proud of, energy drink days. I didn't realize just how sensitive until a few months after drinking coffee. It was when I was drinking coffee the digestive issues started. I now drink decaf on occasion.
I have had the DNA testing and am a confirmed slow metabolizer, and yes, I can confirm that coffee makes me noticeably anxious - and yes, it is usually a prolonged effect, occurring several hours after consumption.
Very cool! Thanks for letting us know. Do you still consume it?
I’ve actually switched to the same thing you’re doing! I make matcha and chai teas, and I find matcha is VERY tolerable. In fact, it gives me some of the energy of coffee without the sense of dread and anxiety. I always thought it was because the caffeine was released more slowly due to being locked up in the fiber/cellulose of the ground up green tea leaves, but didn’t know about the jitter-blunting effects of L-Theanine.
Really appreciate your videos and advocacy for animal rights and plant-based nutrition. You are a huge inspiration to me :)
To answer your question more specifically: I do not drink coffee anymore. I stopped a year or so ago. I’ll occasionally have a small cup or a latte and almost always regret it
Hawk Duncan mm
Thank you for sharing! I quit 30 days ago and I am so happy! Still have some residual caffeine in system I am cleaning out.
I’ve been thinking about giving up coffee for a while, it’s dehydrates me , thank you the video .
Who else is watching this with a cup of coffee. 🤦🏻♂️😂
I recently gave up drinking, not ditching my cup of Joe. Good information though brother.
No lie I just drank a cup after not having one in months 🤦🏻. And Anxiety ☑ tends to come later.
I also use to have a love-hate relationship with coffee. I switched to Dandy Blend. It has a funny name but tastes and looks just like coffee. It's too bad a lot of people don't know about it!
Wow!
I love dandy blend!😊💓
Absolutely hilarious intro! I love my morning coffee but a few hours later comes the big "regert"! Thanks for sharing!
Thanks to you, I understood that I am a slow cafeine metabolizer! Thanks a lot, you really answered many questions I had even after watching a lot of videos about coffee.
Watching this while drinking my first cup of coffee this morning 😂 Can't even imagine breaking up w/ mine, but know I should.
I thought I had panic anxiety syndrome, actually it was just coffee making me short of breath!
I wonder how many people are the same. With all the anti-anxiety medication being given and everyone constantly seeking out coffee to fuel their busy lives. It's a shame, I hope more people realize this.
I used to get the same feelings and what made it worst was vaping ok top of 6mg nicotine I almost had a heart attack fuck now I juts drink cofee one or days out of the 7 days of week and weekend and that works great for me
Hey Derek I felt like I could really relate to you on all of these points! Good stuff, keep up the great work.
Great video! I too have been undecided for the longest time when it came to coffee. Loved the buzz, hated the crash. Gave it up about a year ago and replaced it with matcha. Love it! It's warm and comforting, easy on my stomach, and I feel like it gives me more sustained energy throughout the day.
I only drink coffee during finals week. I use to be addicted when I got my first job but then it started to make my heart feel weird and the anxiety got so so bad. I quit and released I didn't need it as much as I thought I did. However, I do miss it when I smell it in shops and what not. It was also one of the most stable parts of my daily routine, so having to eliminate that almost made me feel like my day was thrown off.
But I'm glad I quit. I'm glad I can say it doesn't have a hold over my life like it use to.
Derek DiCaprio, keep the content coming ! Excellent videos !

Hey brother, love your channel. A few months ago, I started making a few changes suggested by :- Simnett Nutrition, Chef AJ, John Rose, Dan McDonald, Lou Corona and Prof. Caldwell Esselstyn and Dr. John McDougall and so on to benefit my health. Shortly before that I was in hospital to have a pre-op check for blood pressure. They were going to insert a grommet in the ear drum of my left ear and were testing to how my heart would react to general anesthetic. I drank a Lemon Ginger Blast for breakfast for 3 months and my hearing returned to normal so the op became unnecessary. To the original point, I had a coffee 3 hours before arriving at the hospital and they made me sit for another 3 hours before taking readings for blood pressure. They mentioned something about the arteries constricting and driving blood pressure up, due to some component in the coffee. Sadly, I missed the scientific medical jargon they used but the upshot was coffee effects your arteries and not in a good way. So if you have Coronary Heart Disease or any heart related problems then avoiding coffee might be a good idea. Best Wishes to yourself and everyone at Simnett Nutrition. Many thanks Pat.
That’s a great testimony what you wrote there I can’t even explain it how it can speak to millions I’m feeling deaf in my right ear somethings going on and I’ve been drinking so many caffeine well I tried to get away from drinking it so I was eating chocolate bars pure dark chocolate but I think that was the cause that’s causing this blockage in and I’m giving it up some past five days now and I have hope that something great is going to come out of that because that’s not a way to live just live on chocolate dark and you’re giving me hope That really made my day because I’m such an addictive personality with caffeine of any kind
@@janicepaul9957 Hey thanks, but I can't take the credit for the Lemon, Ginger blast. The others on the Hero's Journey give me the inspiration. I'm a chocoholic too so I can't even limit my intake I just went cold turkey. Plus I think it contains milk also, and that doesn't help the hearing as it causes mucus, wax and fluid and so on. So a week of salads and vegetables with the LGB and you'll be in great shape in no time. All the best sister. Blessings.
Thanks for sharing this with us. I feel the same while drinking coffee. And I was getting more side effects from coffee specially before becoming a vegan. After becoming vegan the coffee side effects were less but I still got them. Shortness of breath, anxiety and the strange thing is you feel very happy and optimistic in the first two hours.
Thank you, thank you for sharing. I can totally relate to you. I thought it was just me. I've stopped drinking coffee for about two weeks now. After all the withdrawal headaches passed, I'm feeling better now too. Let's keep it up (not drinking coffee)!
I was sick the entire week last week and didn't drink any coffee. Then I finally had my first cup on Saturday, it made me so intense I was literally shaking. Gonna try breaking up with coffee now...
I replaced with green tea .... still love coffee
If you liked this video, you may also want to know that one benefit to coffee is that it has some components that can help decrease lipopolysaccharides (LPS) that can result from leaky gut or SIBO! One of those components is cholorogenic acid. This is important because LPS can harm the liver and the brain!
LOL, I love your conversation with your coffee. I have been thinking about making a similar video, just talking about why and how I switched from coffee to Matcha and how much better I feel now!
Dude, we have 100% the same reception of caffeine! I figured it out myself about half a year ago and with decaf coffee im totally fine. The Part where you explained the tightness of your chest, the breathing and the anxiety was exactly what i experienced a lot of times. Dope video! I love your honesty and open personality. Keep it up man!
I'm with you. I love the smell and taste of coffee... Love the initial energy boost, but can't stand the fast heartbeats and doom feeling later in the day. Tea too, and even decaf. Every now and then, I'll have some dark (non dairy) chocolate. Makes me feel good, no anxiety, but can't have it every day. Wish I could find a way to have that good surge of energy without the negative reactions. Can't imagine giving up coffee for a few days without being sick... the headaches and body distress is horrible. Once you're off it, stay off it.
... I think cordycepts are grown on the backs of insects and caterpillars. Tell me if I'm wrong, but they wouldn't be vegan, then. I miss coffee, but can't handle the anxiety. I must be one of those slow metabolizers. I wake up in the morning with my heart pounding, if I have some the day before. Might be the reason. Hmm! Interesting.
Every time I have caffeine I get explosive diarrhea and crazy anxiety (especially from soda and coffee). I can easily live without soda but ya know it’s really sad when you can’t enjoy an iced coffee on a hot summer day :(
I love this!! Being new to your channel I was curious as to what you were going to share and you 💯 described my relationship with coffee! I broke up with it about 6 months ago... it was hard and I was sad because I love it so. Like you, I only drank about 1 cup a day, 2 on occasion and I would have the exact same reaction... anxiety, thinking I needed to meditate more, & chittery. My nervous system felt like it was going a million miles a minute. I also was experiencing heart palpitations. That first week of our breakup was SO HARD! The headaches... migraine like were almost unbearable but once I made it to the other side... whoa!! I could breath again. Thanks so much for sharing your experience!! Just wanted you to know that you are not alone.
Holy Moley! Just last week I cut out coffee because it was triggering panic attacks quite badly. Now you make this vid. Makes me feel better about my decision!
I'm turning 43 and just recently started having coffee every morning except weekends. Mainly because it goes so good with my almond butter toast .
It will be every day soon enough..
I get anxiety when i drink coffee too.. I noticed I can't sleep rite either I have cut it out for a month N felt great ive switched tea .. Thanx for sharing
Oooh that mushroom matcha drink looks amazing! Coffee is so sneaky but I'm also a slow metabloiser so it really messes with my sleep and I get that chest thing too. Great job man, love the videos. ✌👌
Totally agree Derek. I used to drink 3-6 large cups a day. Didn't realize how much coffee was effecting me until i stopped drinking it for lent season. I'm new here but love your videos and all the good info!
