  • The never-ending story of European nations acquiring hot hatches deemed inappropriate for us Americans keeps on. We made our bed and now we have to lie in it, but that doesn't mean we wouldn't want to drive the freshly unveiled fourth-generation BMW 1-series.
There will be four powerplant choices for the new 1-series hatch: two diesel and two gas-fed models. From least powerful to greatest, the 118d produces just 265 pound-feet of torque and modest 148 horsepower. By matching the diesel mill with a 48-volt hybrid system, output rises to 161 horsepower and 295 pound-feet as one approaches the 120d.Though the 120 model stays a wimp, the gasoline models give a little more oomph. Complementing a 48-volt hybrid system and seven-speed dual-clutch automatic transmission is a 1.5-liter three-cylinder engine. Peak output for it is 207 pound-feet of torque and 168 horsepower.Drawing on the turbocharged 2.0-liter four-cylinder hybrid arrangement from the BMW X1 M35i, the M135 model boasts the most thrilling powertrain. BMW claims the baby M vehicle generates 296 horsepower and 295 pound-feet of torque, which drives the hatchback to 62 mph in a remarkable 4.9 seconds.
Regarding style, the new 1-series experiences evolutionary adjustments over the departing model. Sadly, the new 1-series hatch appearance resembles a soft-boiled egg someone dumped on the floor thanks in part to a lower grille and slimmer headlamps. The rounded front end fits perfectly with the roofline to produce a kind of amorphous blob on wheels. The inside of the new 1-series gets more radical alterations. The 2025 model gets twin screens running BMW's newest iDrive 9 infotainment system. While the center infotainment screen is just slightly bigger and measures 10.7 inches, the digital gauge cluster measures 10.3 inches.
The new 1-series presents a new BMW naming approach in a change just required for fierce bar trivia players. BMW is deleting "i" from its gasoline-powered models as electric cars take front stage on its portfolio. The M135i xDrive turns into just the M135 xDrive; the 120i goes to the 120.
Starting this October, the new 1-series will be sold throughout Europe.
