Looks amazing! Such a great pergola system!
Greetings from Poland. You're awesome!
Hello Poland! Thank you!
Love the Grid, frustrated with their website - when clicking on the "Kit" page it does not come it does not upload fully so that you can see the kits and/0r sizes. Going to your channel now to see if I get better results.
Low voļume but interesting. Thank you for sharing with us.
From a structural standpoint, what advice do you have for bolting this down to the wooden deck? Is it sufficient to lag bolt (or even screw) this to the deck joists? It doesn't look like Rich poured any concrete or cut holes through his deck, but I've also heard advice to the contrary.
He lag-bolted his through the deck boards into the joists.
Thanks for making these videos keep making them 😁 , I want to order one,
So if I have a concrete slab 10x12 and I want to be on the edge of the concrete slab, The order should be 9ft 8inches x 11ft 8inches ?
The limiting factor is the shade sail, which come in even sizes (8, 10, or 12 feet). If your patio is exactly 10x12, you’ll buy a 10x12 pergola and you’ll need to cut the top beams about 4” shorter so it will fit on your patio. Then you’ll install the shade sail brackets on TOP of the beams instead of facing inside. Does that make sense?
Yes. Thank you
I like everything about it except I’d want to screen it in to keep the bugs out! I’ll have to figure out if that can be done. The screened canopy on my deck just blew off so I need another solution.
Please use my link if you buy one. Costs you nothing extra but helps support my channel. handydad.tv/shoptoja
That moment when he says he was expecting 60 people and then you check the video's publish date because of covid. HAHA!
It’s disturbing but true.
What do you do in the winter? I assume that you take it down? Any idea on life expectancy before UV eats the material? I like the looks of this.
Yes, the sun shades won’t hold snow. The buckles make it east to remove them.
Where’s the link to order ?

How do you make the posts attached to the deck floor level? Some of my deck board are warped. Thanks
You need a solid surface for the posts, and they needs to be reinforced underneath unless they land on joists. So plan on replacing any bad deck boards first.
But the simple answer is, you cut the posts to the appropriate length to accommodate the slope of whatever you’re installing it on (deck, patio, ground).
Do they just sell the brackets for the wood frame and the sail / canopy top ? I need something like this.
Yes. You can get them individually or in a kit.
Did he say he just screwed the base into the deck? I am thinking of buying the Toja and I have a composite deck - would I need any type of additional supports?
The feet (called Grid Solo) need to have a solid footing. Composite decking looks good but has little strength so you need to make sure the feet land on framing below your decking. If not, you will need to add framing in those spots.
If the shade sails are EXACTLY 10' x 12' (or 8x8 or 12x12, etc) and I am building a deck that only extends out 12' from my house (with no issue for how wide it is) ....and the base holders have 1" wide screwing flanges to attach them to the deck...and a person has to account for the width of the 4x4 top beams and the thickness of the holders that the beams slide in to....it seems to me that I would need to have a deck that extends out from my house about an extra 9-10" to have the outer edge of the base holder in line with the outer edge of my deck. Is that the case? I would have to add 1" times 2 for the flanges, 3 1/2" times 2 for the 4x4s, which makes an extra 9 inches, and then account for the thickness of the 14 gauge steel top holders and the powder coating on it....so maybe another 3/4" to 1" ...so about 10 inches in total. Is that more or less the case? If so, for my deck, I would still build it out 12" from my house but would only use a 10" shade sail, have the outer edge of the base holders in line with the outer edge of my deck, and have the other base holders (the ones near the house) in about 1 foot 2 inches from that edge of the deck, and have to have it lower than my eaves (unlike your video where you have it higher). That is the only way that I could see having the 10" shade sail be able to be pulled tight. Your comments only addressed the width regarding your gate with the double-wide structure but did not address the depth issue. Maybe because your deck is deep enough to account for that. Good video though and I do like the look. Did you just screw the base holders to the deck without beefing up the deck itself? I am wondering about how sturdy the posts will be over time. I might even consider using bolts through the decking in a few of the holes to hold it more securely.
The shade sails are not full size because they have room for the straps to tighten them. If you really want exact specifications, contact the company at handydad.tv/shoptoja before ordering.
Do you think a kit like this could handle 15x15 without having to add the extra poles in the middle?
Check the website
Great video. I’m thinking about purchasing one, but was just wondering how sturdy it was. I’ve seen a lot of videos on these but never see anybody grab one of the 4X4 post and push on it. Just curious before I spend the money. Have seen a lot of pergolas and some of them are poor quality and flimsy. This looks like an amazing product.
same question for me. Will be talking to a local dealer about these this week. Also just saw this on a television show (a reputable one) from Toronto (since I live in Canada) and they seemed okay with it...but how knows...right. I'm pretty sure the screws into the deck for the base holders will be fine at first but after a while, decks start to go. Maybe a few bolts instead of screws right through the decking...???? not sure.
If you’re worried about it, a couple of bolts would give you piece of mind.
I live in an area with common 20- 40 mph wind gusts. And 60 + mph during Diablo winds....any issues with sturdiness? I like the simplicity. Thanks
Did you say you had a discount code for this? I can definitely afford them but I find the price to be just a little too high… Which is too bad
Everything is 20% off this weekend. No code needed handydad.tv/shoptoja
Love his property! Which state is the located?
New Jersey
HandyDadTV Hi, how did he bolt/anchor the bottom brackets to the deck? My concern is how stable it is if my deck board is only 2 inch thick. Please advise.
He added support under the deck boards below the feet.
I see you have your grill under the sun shade, any noticeable issues with this?
Not so far
Thanks
Just getting over his massive back yard
Yeah it’s nice
How do you get some slope on it to shed the rain?
They have new options with solid covers to shed the rain: handydad.tv/shoptoja
How much were the brackets and where can I get them?

HandyDadTV Thsnks I found it...
If it came off deck i think it would look way cleaner. Im really not feeling this 2 foot gap between the house. TBH the fact its taller than the roof of the house throws me off alot too. Looks more like someone threw up a party tent up rather than a permanent pergola structure.
The height is completely adjustable by shortening the posts. In addition, TOJA now offers custom sized tarps if the stock sizes don’t work for you.
I do like it. However I personally would of preferred a more “built in” look than an add on pergola
Rich has a great backyard..Curios to the total cost
There’s a link in the description.
He doesn’t need a shade at night. 😜
if you had helped him he might of offered a beer
roof is not rain proof?
No, it’s just for shade and ambiance.
It’s been 4yrs. Is it still standing?
Oh yeah! I just built another one: czcams.com/video/DOPVXsRUkL4/video.html
Not really sure how it was completed 🤔
Did you make it or buy it
You buy the brackets and the wood separately then build it yourself.
@@handydadtv what about the covers did you have them specially made for the size or are they standard size
The shades come with the brackets. They come in several standard sizes, or you can have them custom sized.
Where can I order need 12x12 more info
handydad.tv/shoptoja has all the options.
Instead of moving the steps or removing the gate how about cut the 4x4 3 inches shorter? 😂
Then the canopy that comes with the kit would be really saggy.
How much was this
Prices have changed since then. Check handydad.tv/toja
That cedar is going to rot overtime
There’s no pitch. Rain water will stay in the center of the tarp..?
It’s not a solid tarp; it’s just for shade.
After he said he hasn't been in his back yard, then he said he was there the other night. Makes me think he is selling this and now lose interest
When he said he hasn't been there before, it was before the Pergola was installed. He was getting a before hand look. When he said he was there the other night, it was after the Pergola was installed. The actual "interview" part was the 2nd time he was there.
@MetalDuck thanks for having my back!
Uhh nah no thanks
Because of the looks or quality?
Thanks
