Margaret! What a stunning mini documentary! This is something that needed exploration. So, kudos to Joe the Quilter, and to you for donating one of your works. I would love to see the series as soon as Joe completes it!

ah Joe, you know how this speaks to my heart! I admit though that, I want to take your piece one step further and paint on top of the quilted painting :-) Something similar to this has been going thru my head for a while now, although not with canvas with painted fabric, it would be far kinder to the process.

Excellent. You should as a final twist display it back on a bed from where Rauschenberg took it x x x

  • @Artylad

Displaying it as a blanket. Just a blanket. There you go Rauschenberg ,this artwork is just a blanket x x x

A young female artist in the house with other artists. Rauschenberg saw her grandmother’s quilt and used it. The woman was angry until she realized how her grandmother’s quilt would live on forever!

    Improve, or incorporate?
The canvas is integral to the art. As it was for the quilt in Rauschenberg's piece, it is here.
9:07 "...it has no value, until Sanford Biggers, the artist, gives it value by making a piece of art out of it." I know that Joe Cunningham says this in a general sense, without agreeing with the premise, just as he surely does not agree that craft is not legitimate. At times, that may be true , but not with the "canvas" used in Biggers art. As Cunningham says, in reference to Biggers, "...totally ignores the possibility that it had any esthetical value when it was a simple quilt."
"To me, what a quilt looks like is the last thing that I'm interested in. I just find out what it looks like by making it." --- makes me think of the Siddi process.
Thank you for being a part if this, and thank you to Joe Cunningham, for allowing us to see this from his perspective.
