Heavy metal: moving a 62.2 tonne Challenger 2 tank

  • Getting the UK's heavy armour from A to B takes a handful of specialists and kit.
    Heavy equipment transporter (HET) vehicles and their seven-axle trailers are used for transporting armoured vehicles, like the Challenger 2 tank, which weighs 62.5 tonnes (75.0 tonnes when combat ready with add-on armour modules).
    Ten chains, following a strict tiedown scheme, are used to hold the tank in place on the trailer before it is raised up using a hydraulics system.
    After final checks, it is piggybacked onto civilian roads.

      There's a good chance I met your dad. I spent 22 years on British tanks, many of them on CR1 and was transported by low-loader many, many times.
      Anyway, RIP to your father, GBNF.

    My uncle joined the RASC in 1939 before he was called up as he wanted to learn to drive. He survived the 2nd world war and passed away in 1993 age 78. A great uncle who I learned a lot from. He served in France Africa Italy and Palestine oh and Germany! Enjoyed gardening and cricket and a pint. Didn’t want to drive anymore after peace broke out!!! 🇬🇧He was also in Scilly landing on the 10th July1943. He recovered from a bout of malaria before heading to Italy.Then back home to Small Heath via Liverpool for two weeks of leave.

      Lack of strategic planning and procurement means demand in dribs and drabs so that industry cannot plan and invest. Thus industry is forced to do something else including shutter the business.

    • @cjjk9142
      @cjjk9142 Před 9 měsíci

      Debatable. They can be taken out of action but unless it’s a direct hit by heavy artillery then they can be easily repaired
      By that logic all things are obsolete and we should just fight each other using drones and nothing else

      @@cjjk9142 They can be repaired but they have to first be recovered and that in itself can be very difficult and dangerous. • @qasimmir7117
      @qasimmir7117 Před 9 měsíci +2

      Tanks are a combination of manoeuvre (cavalry), heavy firepower (artillery), and armoured protection. That tactical capability of the tank is not obsolete as nothing can do what a tank can do. The speed of engagement is unmatched, the ability to gain ground so quickly, using large ordinance and the tactical psychological power. You can’t effectively attack en mass with missiles or drones. You need something that wins the objective. If obsolescence is the case then it is the current generation of tanks that would be to blame, but the tank as a tactical unit is still very much relevant.

  • @tellyboy17

      @@lachlanchester8142 It’s about the relative cost of development/upkeep and maintenace v’s benefit derived thgiven the new prevailing conditions. Both infantry and heavy cavalry in late 17th century were ‘vulnerable’ to musket balls and cannon, however one was relatively easy and cost effective to train and maintain whilst the other wasn’t. Comes down to cost v benefit v vulnerability.

    • @tellyboy17
      @tellyboy17 Před 9 měsíci

      Everything is vulnerable on the modern battlefield, the trick is not to waste money on systems that typically get destroyed before getting the chance of doing any damage themselves like tanks. The Ukraine tank graveyard testifies to this but maybe the upcoming Merkava graveyard in Gaza and lebanon will help drive the point home. @@lachlanchester8142

Civilian super-heavy transporters often have "extenders" which increase the width of the trailer but then other rules apply. If the vehicle you're transporting runs on tracks you will not need to widen the trailer bed.
