In this installment of Creating A Great Sounding Tone for our Line 6 Helix and HX Stomp, I take a look at some of the possibilities when we run dual amp models and use them for shaping new an exciting tones. I really hope you enjoy the ideas presented here and that they help you to discover some new sounds. If you would like to grab this preset from CustomTone to experiment with, you can do so here:

Another brilliant example of the amazing power in the Helix... tone is the ear that lives within .... so you live with what you create to make personal... your mapping sure does make sorting this out SO much easier!
Jason, this was soooo inspiring to watch. A bit of a revelation to me to be honest. I mean, in addition to the endless combination possibilities with pedal and single amps, this shows another set of endless combinations with dual amps. And the stereo, twin guitar approach for recording is stellar! Thank you so much for the effort of sharing these insights, and the template too!!!
Jason, you're a Bloody Legend Mate! So knowledgeable. So generous with your time / videos and the tones you have on customtone. Much love & respect to ya. You definitely show the possibilities the Helix is capable. Keep up the good work man! if you ever make your way down to London, UK I'll happily buy you a drink or 3 \m/
Great vid and excellent presentation Jason! I really enjoyed this one.
Jason,
Great stuff (as usual).
I was wondering, as this ended up being a lead type tone, if you can do a follow-on video on how to turn this dual amp setup into a "4 channel'ish" setup of clean to lead?
In any case, thanks for all the great info and playing!
Been doing this a lot lately and having a blast! 👌🏻🕶✌🏻
Before I even watch the video...I love it! And you’re doing a fantastic job!!!
Thankw for another amazing Helix video. Great tone with the 2 amps blended for sure. Im back at home after 13d days in the hospital. Keep up the great work as always. Hope to try this one out soon.
Finally Jason, the dual amp demo. I have been doing this from almost day 1. My favourite heavy tone is the Marshall JCM800 and Soldano SLO100. I'd set the Marshall dry and the Soldano wet (plate reverb). Very much inspired by love of Jerry Cantrell's tone.
Jason, my guitar strap is off to you my good man. Another helpful video. Did the blending thing tonight, and added an IR and got a fabulous new sound.
Just what I needed Jason! Thanks.
As usual, helpful. Thanks....
Very cool. I usually just make two separate paths for different amps. I am going to try your idea out. Thanks
Great video, Jason. I almost always use two amps (at least for med to high gain tones) to help cover a broader territory and thicken the tone. One set for a lower gain percussive tone, and the other to give it the low end punch and top end crunch :) Thanks for doing what you do for the Helix community here.
I also use two apms, different configuration thought. I put one on each path (I use third party IRs, two for each amp, one for the midrange the other more focused on the top end). I always use two of the same model, one with an overdrive, booster, etc in front of it (dallas rangemaster in my case, I love that pedal) and the other one cleanish, even a little bit crunchy. It's incredible the clarity one gets out of this configuration, totally recommended.
PD: Thank you for all your videos, I would make this amazing devise sound terrible if it wasn't for you and your channel. Greetings from Spain!
Great vid. The possibilities are amazing indeed! By the way, what guitar cable would you recommend for the Helix?
I want to try this with the Revv and the Engl
Very cool - wonder what adding an ir to this setup would do
Hey, thanks for this. I commented the other day on this very subject and here it is!! BTW, I bought a bunch of your packs from the Line 6 store and cannot wait to use them.. Thanks, mate!
I love them and he always achieves unity gain painlessly, which is the battle.
Jim Kordahl Jim, I’m no philosopher, I am but a simple soul, but it seems to me that if achieving Unity Gain is your biggest battle, compared to, let’s just say, convincing my wife that I need a T.V Jones guitar, I’d say that you, dear Jim, are a king among men.
Also, I have just used the AC-30 tones.. They are terrific..
@@jerryhollis8155 Jerry, my first and only decree as king among men is and will only ever be is unity gain for all! Now go play on you fine peoples of the Line6 Helix, play on players.
Jerry, you made my day, thanks dude! Yes the AC30 patch is really d o p e.
Jim Kordahl Majesty, I live to serve. Perhaps you could see your way clear to have a word with my wife about that T.V Jones guitar
@@jerryhollis8155 I am a generous King, tis true, but tho's request for a T.V. Jones guitar is currently under royal advisement. Generous I am, tis true, I fear the fury of a wife scorn, even with my royal intervention. However I did threaten her with all the might of all my mighty kingdom and to be OFF WITH HER CREDIT CARD! Alas, she is a formidable advisory even for the King. Then I sent my many knights to raid her in her natural habitat, only to be repelled by the might of mace and enchanted pepper spray.
I CAN send tho on a holy quest, YES A QUEST, for the glorious T.V. Jones guitar and post a video displaying the splendor of your negotiating prowess. Seek your holy grail with great dispatch Sir Jerry "of the desired T.V. Jones guitar" Hollis!!! POST HASTE Sir Jerry, POST HAST!!
Another great video, thank you Jason.
Your tone at 16:30 was awesome. And I thought that it already had that quality of being doubled. It sounded better to me than when later on you added a short delay on one amp to achieve this effect. Also, how does this dual amp sap the dsp when using fx in the preset?
Like that 🎸😎👍🏻
BOOOO to the thumbs down few... Great demo tone, love how that combination turned out and how you routed the path of possibilities n junk. Thanks Jason, I love my Helix thanks to your videos!
I can’t wait to blend the 5150 with the rectifier!!!!!
Have you done it yet? Was it pretty cool? Sounds like an excellent idea.
@@PB-1 I did and it blew my head away. It's my main tone now! Thank you Jason!!!!!!
great idea.... stealing it... not so fair, not so square lol.
Jason, I'd like to see you go more in depth with the double take. I know you did to an extent with the Miracle Man video. Personally, i typically run all my pre fx and amp in path 1A, then for 2A, cab> clean boost> stereo mod fx> double take then split. Your output comp and a looper finish 2A, and my reverb and delay are in 2B and i do not rejoin the paths. I like the WDW effect, and i love the stereo fatness of the double take. Of course, the stereo doubler has to be disabled if the output goes to mono. The comb filtering is horrible! Lol. Anyway, I'd really like to see your thoughts on this. Thanks man! Great stuff as always!
Great as usual! What guage and type of strings do you use
Hi Jason, I have a cry baby wah pedal whats the best way of running it to helix? Will it be okay to go straight to the guitar input of the helix or use the effects loop?
Let’s see the stomp version of this haha!
Can you blend between amps with the expression pedal? Like could I set up a super clean fender amp sound and a 5150 kind of high gain metal amp and then have it so an expression pedal lets you blend between the two to get smoother transitions between sounds?
I know you can use an expression to bring up the drive from a clean sound to a high gain one. But that just the same amp sounds with and without gain.
Hey Jason - have you done a tutorial on how to get a killer Acoustic tone with the Helix using a Variax?
Where is Pt. 41? I love this series, but have searched and searched for Pt. 41 and can't find it. Does anyone have a link?
No matter what i do, i hear the unprocessed dry sound underneath my distorted amp tone.. I can only assume its also on my clean but more difficult to hear... Can't be a daw issue as its happening at rehearsal going direct to a monitor/PA.. its driving me insane.. when i only want, say, a reverb on the clean, but a dry overdrive, i cannot do it because the dry unprocessed signal is being affected, giving the illusion that the overdrive has reverb or delay or whatever. .Hope you can help... Can't find answers anywhere
Can I ask if the presets that this is happening on, are you using only one of the paths on the Helix?
Welp.... I just noodled with duel amps for 4 hours and got overwhelmed with possibilities. God gave us 8 snapshots for a reason right? 😂😂
To my understanding, the A/B split would occur before amp processing and thus before saturation. To blend the amp sounds you have to use either the volumes or the mixer, after processing. I wonder why you talk about the splitter as it would be an option that you don't use because you're not satisfied while this option can't possibly do what you are looking for.
Yes you are correct. It does do it somewhat as it sends more or less signal to the front of each amp therefore altering the tone as it hits the front of the amp harder or softer, something I wasn't really thinking about as I was speaking off the top of my head but ultimately why I chose a different way.
@@JasonSadites Yes wouldn't it make more sense to use the Y split so both amps get a full signal, then use the merge block to alter the mix/blend between them.
Both amps in mono with that delay makes a little bit of chorus. That’s all chorus is anyways though.
That would be true if the delay time was being modulated, which it isn't here. It is also not being mixed with a copy of itself since both amps are set to very different tones. So not really a chorus effect going on here.
dual amps always giving me phase issues
I need "Helix Lessons".....what's your address ?? HA !!
