  • From Sam Peckinpah's Pat Garrett and Billy the Kid (1973). As Billy the Kid (Kris Kristofferson) stops at the Horrell Trading Post, he runs into Pat Garrett's deputy, Alamosa Bill (Jack Elam). Peckinpah's superb direction is enhanced by Bob Dylan's soundtrack, and it's always a pleasure to see Jack Elam on screen.

    An absolutely classic movie.
Arguably one of the best westerns ever made.
A great cast with an all-star supporting cast including Harry Dean Stanton, L.Q Jones, Chill Wills, Jack Elam, Slim Pickens, Katy Juardo, Rita Coolidge, and, of course, Bob Dylan.
    Directed by Sam Peckinpah.

Speaking of Brando and Western movies...
Another great one was One Eyed Jacks with Brando, Karl Malden, Ben Johnson, and Katy Juardo.
      Also:
      Viva Zapata 👍
      &
      The Appaloosa 👍

You will also enjoy those two movies... both classic!
In Viva Zapata, Anthony Quinn won an Oscar for BSA. He plays Zapata's brother. Shot in black & white - with the same gritty feel as Treasure of the Sierra Madre.
      Enjoy!!! 👍

A classic does not do it justice, legendary is more like it....the scripting was perfect as was the soundtrack.

Just one thing… How come Alamosa didn’t notice that Billy’s spurs are makin’ no noise at all?

When I first saw this movie in the Cinema (Sydney Australia, early 70s), I believe it was a different edit from this one. As I remember it, the count to ten starts and the camera tracks Alamosa Bill, and we see him turn on "eight" to get the advantage over Billy.
And only then does the camera pull back - and Billy comes into frame, having already turned and ready to shoot. Which he does.
But in this edit we see from the start that Billy isn't even walking away. The edit I remember makes for more tension (Oh No! Billy's going to die!) and then surprise (Phew! Billy's an even bigger cheat than Alamosa!), and I thought at the time it was genius.
Or am I misremembering? Anyone help?

There is an original theatrical version from 1973. There is a Roadshow Edition recut in 1988 (on the mid Noughties DVD along with the Theatrical version) which bookends the film with the killing of Pat Garett. I suppose all this will be resolved in July when criterion USA are releasing the 50th anniversary edition 4K UHD Blu Ray. It will contain three different cuts of the film plus extras all in 4K HDR Dolby Vision etc. so it’s all good fun, like Close Encounters of the Third Kind and Apocalypse Now which both now have three versions in existence now. There will also be a 2K presentation of the preview cut on the box set. I’m not absolutely sure about the version you speak of as I am only familiar with the Roadshow Edition. Hope this Helps.
