I think that onion straws can be used for so much more than just an appetizer. You make this recipe looks so simple, and I think you spice choices were spot on. I would love to see how these work on your green bean casserole recipe. The final result can clearly be seen after you finished frying off the straws with Cajun flavors.

I made these last night and they turned out really well. I followed the recipe as indicated and found that you have to break up the big pieces like he said and be careful or they will burn really fast. This is just my opinion but I thought they were a little bland when I tried one so I sprinkled on some seasoned salt after cooking. Also it you have a mandoline I would recommend using that to slice the onions.

I also when dusting with flour, use a gallon Ziploc bag , it's not as messy . A former. Local restaurant use to toss the onions in fruit fresh and put in cooler overnight.

They get chewy if you let them sit in the flour mixture too long. I find it is best to dust them and immediately put them in oil. My seasoning is: A cup of flour, half a cup of Italian Breadcrumb seasoning, a tablespoon each of garlic powder, onion powder, sugar, and a bit of salt. Hot oil so they cook in about 2 minutes.

How much oil was that & what do you do with the left over oil? Can you reuse it or should it be dumped?

I’m looking to make these to replace the store bought versions. I’m reading the ingredients on the can but I don’t see any preservatives. Any idea? They use wheat flour and soy flour. That’s the only thing I can find different. Any ideas? I know this is a late question.

Can you cook these earlier in the day that you're going to use them? I want them to top a steak, but I want to be able to visit with my guests before dinner. How should I "hold" them? Thanks.

You mean all these years I've been doing the egg or buttermilk, then the flour; when I could have just dumped it all in one bowl :-o

If you cut the onions in the right direction to begin with you dont have to got back and cut them twice. You're teaching people the wrong way to do things.
