A Day in the Life of Air Traffic Over the United States

    FACET is a simulation tool for exploring advanced air traffic management concepts.
    An efficient and effective air traffic management system is vital to the U.S. transportation infrastructure. Since 1978, when the airline industry was deregulated, the inflation adjusted gross domestic product (GDP) has increased by 62 percent. In this same time period, total output of scheduled passenger air transportation (as measured by Revenue Passenger Miles) has increased by 190 percent and total airfreight ton miles have increased by 289 percent. Since 1997, flight delays have skyrocketed - doubling in only four years. These trends are expected to continue. In 1998, airline delays in the U.S. cost industry and passengers $4.5 billion -- the equivalent of a 7 percent tax on every dollar collected by all the domestic airlines combined.

    Insane. Just insane. I had no idea the sky was that congested. Especially over the eastern seaboard. It is very interesting to see the "holes" above Nellis out west. Makes me have a whole new appreciation of air traffic controllers. Brilliant!

    Fun Fact of the Day: If you were to take every car manufactured to this date and put them in the airspace above the United States from ground level to 10,000ftMSL every car would be at least one mile apart from each other. Most commercial and corporate jets flyanywhere from 23,000 to 41,000ftMSL

    Flights are controlled by those air control stations located at airports across the country, plus most [if not all] airplanes have radars to tell them if an airplane is near them so they can either go higher or lower, most of the time if an airplane is traveling say from Atlanta to New York, the airplane may be at a higher altitude, while a flight from Atlanta to Nashville, the airplane may be at a lower altitude..

    I just realized something. Of the hundreds of commercial flights I have been on, I cannot ever remember being held in a holding pattern. That is quite amazing. I hear people all the time tell me how long they circled waiting for permission to land. I suppose that is good luck.

    • @ZombieDog09
      @ZombieDog09 Před 5 lety

      I've been in a few, sometimes you hardly even notice unless you're paying attention because it can be very similar to when the airplane simply does a few turns to orient themselves with a runway. The only one I was in for longer than, say 10 minutes, was due to weather and we were holding for almost 30.

  • @StarCaliber1899

      YES dude. Now is the time. Cool running jet aircraft are expected in just ten years due to advances in battery, solar, lightweight airframes, frictionless motors, and radical micro technology. We need to do it in five. Jet traffic is absolutely destroying the planet from pole to pole.

  • @jwmmath

    @cipher1x The name is actually 'comtrails'. Its origin is disputed but both are similar. It comes from comet trails as what a comet does in space. And the second claim is that the first passenger jet in service was the DeHavilland Comet, and it made these same trails and so the pilots nicknamed the trails, 'comet trails'. It has nothing to do with chemicals, and the trails are nothing more than water vapor, as jet engines are 20% burn and 80% compressed bypass air for thrust.

  • @ding0925
    @ding0925 Před 14 lety

    With the economy being so tight not much fuel is wasted unless for some reason the aircraft has to divert and land early than they have to dump most all leftover fuel to land on nearly empty tanks .
    So if one takes off and has to return to unload a unruly passenger or for an emergency think of where all that fuel they just loaded has to go? over the local trailer park..

    Do the FedEx and CIA drug flights from Mexico get priority status on landings or due they have to go into a holding pattern just like other flights.

    • @ZombieDog09
      @ZombieDog09 Před 5 lety +1

      Pretty sure FedEx and other delivery planes like UPS don't get special treatment. Holding patterns are generally because they simply can't land at the moment because of weather, congested runways, wind shear or some other problem.
