      Agreed... I'd say it's because it was so tricky to find as a series. Often word spreads around through word of mouth. Because The Terror was initially exclusive to a couple of platforms at first, its audience was far smaller. Hopefully when it comes to BBC iplayer in the UK it will get a lot more attention.

    Last year (2019) the desk of Captain Crozier was found completely intact on the Terror, and there are now plans to try and open the desk in an attempt to find any logs that may be helpful in piecing together the early events of the expedition.

The British Empire, the greatest power in the world at the time, are over-confident and have no chance against the forces of nature. If you’d like to do this more seriously, maybe work on some enunciation, but not much certain words (I’m an American southerner so I can’t talk shit about accents 😂) but you were to the point and highlighted the entire series perfectly without spoiling anything. That makes the enunciation matter less. You have a decent voice and you seem to be intelligent and able to express yourself and your feelings about the series properly.

It is thouroughly amazing and while the story line of the expediton itself is based on fact it is none the less a great piece of film. I also read a book called Ice Blink whic is about the expedition and delves into the tinned food scandal which supposedly killed so many of the men and featured alot in the stroyline, it is well written, enjoyable to read and very informative if you want to know more about why this might have been a cause. Because it has elements of cosmic/Lovecraftian horror - isolation, the fear of the unknown and that we as humans are at the mercy of something much more powerful than us. Another one is madness - which is another prominent theme. It isn't cosmic horror, but it certainly has elements and themes of it. The Thing on the other hand is most certainly cosmic/Lovecraftian horror.

    I thought that the monster aspect (and the monster’s visual depiction) were both really stupid/poorly done.
    Other than that, I loved everything about this. The acting, superb (not a bad performance across the board, and Jared Harris / Ciaran Hinds were particularly powerful IMO). The writing, fantastic. The scenery and prop crew and the makeup… amazing. The writing, gripping… the pace was very good…
    I mean, it’s just a marvelous show. I think it could have done without the monster though tbh and been more of a psychological thriller. Or, if you’re going to have a monster, make it scary. This monster was kinda laughable to me.

      @@rocioquiroz11The Tuunbaq was in the book. Its origins and purpose are explained a little during a fairly trippy sequence towards the end of the book which understandably didn't make it into the show because it comprises mostly stream of consciousness which would be difficult to adapt. Read the book if you wanna know ;)

    • @SirBenjiful
      @SirBenjiful Před 11 měsíci

      @@carsonlombardi7361The problem with adapting the Tuunbaq is that it's described very vaguely in the book because nobody who gets a good look at it lives for long, and it seems to appear by materialising from the environment rather than approaching from a particular direction.
      In the text it's described as a vengeful spirit created by a god from Inuit mythology. It has an agreement with the Inuit shamans which it honours by not attacking humans but the Europeans fuck that up by barging into its land without honouring the deal, which is why it starts hunting them (it first attacks right after they accidentally kill a shaman).
      On a metatextual level it functions as a sort of personification of the arctic reacting to these arrogant men turning up woefully unprepared.

  • @joshuajaydevenport29
    @joshuajaydevenport29 Před rokem

    Why wasn't Tuunbaq explained? Yes, you figure out it's some kind of Inuit familiar, but in the book it goes into depth explaining Tuunbaq as a familiar of the goddess Sedna. When passing through its territory, the Inuit pay homage to Tuunbaq - thus, it's said that the appearance of kabloona (the white men) is an indicator of end times as Tuunbaq's rage is brought upon the world of men as the white explorers do not pay homage to it. In the TV series, it seems like Tuunbaq is some kind of friend to the Inuit which is seriously kind of weird. Yes, Silna is supposed to be responsible for it, but it's not some kind of pet that she loves but rather a serious undertaking as a shaman. This makes the show's theme more of "muh racism, the white man dont understand that big polar bear is supposed to be fren" rather than "the hubris of european expeditionaries in the arctic, believing they could survive without series reconsideration of their tactics, is something that was payed for dearly by the franklin expedition". The book even has a more satisfying ending, with Crozier needing to become a shaman himself by getting his tongue ripped out (which is artistically juxtaposed with Crozier's Irish Catholic taking of the Eucharist) to satisfy the creature, then joining the Inuit and finally starting the family he always longed for with Silna. Why, in the series, did Hickey know the tongue thing was what needed to happen to "take control" of Tuunbaq? This series was very good, but the jagged ending just can't be justified and shows film's constant need need to fuck up a perfectly good story since book adaptations first began.

    Does anyone remember an old movie about a sailing ship that was trapped and couldn't sail. My guess is that it was from the late 60s or early to mid 70s. It was kind of steam punk if I remember correctly, almost in the Jules Verne kind of relm.
    Anyway the ship couldnt move and there was something floating on the water, which could have been what was keeping them from moving. The people on the ship could walk on the substance that was on the surface of the water but they needed to wear these balloon (helium) type devices that kept them from sinking.
    I only ever saw the film once when I was very young and would love to see it again.

    I’m gonna have to give this show a thumbs down. I really really wanted to like it, I did, but I had some pretty big problems with it.
    1) it just didn’t feel like the arctic. Time and again I had a feeling I was watching the portrayal of the arctic in a closed set. I’m sure there were some outside shots, especially when they got to the rocky areas, but they needed to send this crew up north and just brave the elements for awhile.
    2) the monster. I was hoping for half survival movie, half monster movie, but the monster isn’t really in it that much. And of course, when it was it was 100% CGI, no practical effects whatsoever. Couldn’t even be bothered to make one paw for a closeup scene, or something? Nothing seems more real than good practical effects, except a real monster, of course. Coulda added a lot to this movie.
    3) The very tiny amount of likable characters. What were there, like…5 actual good hearted sailors in this movie that didn’t do some kind of scheming or sedition, out of over a hundred?
    Obviously my disappointment comes from hoping for one thing and getting something different, which is going to bias someone’s point a view. A movie about this group of guys banding together to fight seemingly insurmountable odds would’ve been my preference.
    I could say more on this, but I feel like I just wasted 10 hours instead of watching something more to my liking. Different strokes for different folks I guess, as it’s clear a ton of people liked this show, but in the end I gave it a dislike, when all was said and done.
