    Great review as usual. The Canon manual focus guide is second to none in my opinion. I'm glad they are incorporating it in their newer cameras. I love that you mentioned that the C70 could be what Canon owners have been looking for that is equivalent to what Sony is offering. It doesn't have to have all of the exact same features, but just enough to make it compatible so that Canon owners don't have to completely change systems if they are already heavily invested in the system. Thanks again.

    Great video Gerald, I still think it's silly that Canon added 8K video on the R5 without any active cooling but limited the C70 to 4K. Honestly, the C70 should have been able to record minimum in 6K and also in RAW to compete with cameras like the RED Komodo. This is a great camera but also a strange one in the Canon Eco system because we know it's capable of doing more.

    Hi Gerald, Your reviews are always fantastic and I thank you a lot for making them (from France). There is only one thing that you never talk about, is the ergnomics for TV work like with the camera on the shoulder for an entire day. With all the ports on the side of the operator (like in all DSLR) and the screen on the back of the camera, you have to add an extra EVF + rigging and powering solutions which kill the "run and gun" ergonomics... Of course you can't talk about all ways of using a camera but the "cat over the shoulder" (we french like a lot) seems very important to me when you think about buying a buying a camera. We are not all youtubers. But still, thanks a lot for your contents.

Really appreciate all the time / consideration you put into different perspectives (as each camera and videographer have different needs). PS - I’ve had a deposit on an FX6 for a few weeks.. @@bradleyc6564 the RF mount supposedly has the same flexibility as it has a smaller flange distance then the EF mount. At least that is my understanding.There may be 3rd party companies working on a adapter for the RF mount. It just seems the fx6 gives a bit more for the price with low light, raw capability, and full frame. Its a hard one for me. I will decide by end of this year.

    • @dingoboy
      @dingoboy Před 3 lety

      @@bradleyc6564 I think the point is that both Sony and Canon cameras are so good, that most people will choose the one they’ve already got lenses for. While you can put a Canon EF lens on a Sony camera, the autofocus performance is going to be worse than using a native E mount lens. (Which doesn’t mean you have to use a Sony lens: Sigma makes E mount lenses that have great autofocus.) I also don’t think it’s possible to put a Canon RF lens on a Sony E mount camera or vice versa.

    • @dingoboy
      @dingoboy Před 3 lety

      @@d.edwardsfreelanceeditorvi4212 One other thing you might want to consider is where and how you’ll be using the camera. I think the FX6 has an edge of the C70 for outdoor shoots where you’re frequently moving - documentation, wildlife, etc. In those situations, being able to use an EVF (by adding a loupe to the LCD) on the FX6 will be very appealing. I’ve got an a7S and an FX9 and even though the a7S has a wonderful, big touch screen, I almost never use it outdoors; the EVF is better because it’s easier to see in the sunlight and having my eye up against it helps to stabilize the camera.

    Excellent coverage, as always Gerald. Thanks for all your time and hard work. Enjoying the camera so far, but a couple BIG gripes for me: 1) As you mentioned, no "one-button" af tracking activation. Not sure why this is an option for the R5/R6 but not this body. For example, I have "move to center" set to my M-Fn button near the shutter button on my R6's, and it's an absolute game changer for how you can shoot using their amazing DPAF. What it does is automatically engages tracking to whatever is in the center of the frame when pressed. Then you can just press it again to disengage to reacquire on a new subject. Brilliant, but sadly missing from the C70. 2) With 60p native (non S&F) being the best image quality vs the S&F 60/24, I wish Canon would allow us some quick switch options for one-button changes from 24 to 60 so we don't have to dive into menus or press multiple buttons to do this. Additionally, I wish they would allow for slow-mo playback in camera for the native 60p shooting, which IS an option in the R5/R6. This feature is somewhat buried in the mirrorless bodies, but it is there (you choose the second play option when playing back your clips then use the set wheel to slow down the playback to 24p). Why do the mirrorless alternatives have better options? Fortunately, these both seem to be correctable via firmware, but I don't know how common these gripes are and how to even relay the suggestions to them. If you have any ideas on that front I'd absolutely appreciate your insight. Otherwise a lovely camera, but game-changing details like these are a bummer, as I shouldn't be paying twice as much for a video camera and wishing it had video features from the cheaper options.

    Would be really interesting to see an overview of the possibilities using the custom looks from .cube files. Seems like you could bake in an Arri Alexa 709 look or match other camera outputs (slog3, etc) for easy camera matching? You could also implement a Cine EI type mode using different custom looks the bake clog2 pushed or pulled, right?

    Awesome, Gerald! This is the one video I have been waiting from the moment we learned there's gonna be a C70. So, thank you! Before I start watching it again from the beginning, I just wanted to say that I think you just talked me out from buying an FX6. However, what about S-Cinetone...is there anything Canon can fight back with? It's pretty important for me to get beautiful cinematic image out straight from the camera. Cheers!

    Excellent review as always! I'm probably going to get this camera for a solo documentary shoot for next summer abroad. Electronic leveling is important to me, does it have one? If not, what other options do I have to get my horizons perfect on a run-and-gun handheld shoot?

    Amazing, as usual! Your videos have really become the benchmark for camera reviews. Now, how do you feel about the RED Komodo? I feel like this is the last camera in this price/spec range to discusses, and it would be great to hear your thoughts on it and how it compares to the C70, FX6, and the A7SIII.

    Great video! Can you record internally 4K while still outputting 4K OR can you internally record 4K while outputting HD? More broadly, what are the recording/output options on the C70?

    Hey, are you able to get Browser Remote on the C70 or does it require an additional wifi transmitter of some sort?? Somehow my C70 has network settings that are grayed out

    Great review! I have mine pre-ordered, can't wait for it to arrive. Question - I've been hearing a couple of rumors about build quality. Specifically that the C70 feels a bit "plasticky" and "cheap." Did you find that to be the case, or did the body seem pretty robust?

  • @jimmystewartuk

    Thanks for the detailed on point review. I could feel more certain now that the C70 is a the choice for me. At least before Canon releases yet another RF mount camera that is completely or more dedicated to shooting video 😄

    Great Video, thanks Gerald! How exactly did you mount the C70 to the Ronin RS2? Did you use a special mounting plate?
