  • No one told us what happened after the Mahabharata war. Mahabharata is, in fact, the greatest epic ever written. It has a deeply rooted impact on culture, customs and even the way people behave today. The Kurukshetra war is considered one of the Great wars ever fought in human history. What is known is that the Pandavas won and the Kauravas lost. Have you ever wondered what happened after the Pandavas won? Who survived? How long did the Pandavas reign in Hastinapur? Let's take a look at what happened after the Mahabharata war.

Guys, I am a history student and there is a reason some consider Mahabharata to be history while others consider it to be mythology when historians reconstruct the past, written sources is not the only source to recreate history, historians try to find material evidence and try to remove exaggerated information also there are at least 12 different sources before we conclude whether it really happened or is it a moving story, The historians could not justify any claims that Mahabharata happened hence considered it to be a narrative section considering it mythology but now with further excavations, we find sources proving the written claims to be true hence it is history but people have a differing opinion over it. We find coloured pots at Hastinapur site and in Mathura which was written in the text.

Well described. However, from what I've read and heard Yudishtir has to pass through hell momentarily because of the one lie he spoke regarding the death of Ashwatthama in the battlefield. Though he had mentioned 'the elephant', he suppressed the volume of speech when mentioning 'the elephant' and during the course of his passing through hell momentarily he sees his siblings and wife there which is when lord Yama assures him that they will soon attain heaven after their dues are paid off in hell. Again, on entering heaven he sees Duryodhan and the other Kauravas in heaven. Infuriated by this he demands to know how is it that his siblings lament in hell while the sinners are in heaven which is when he is explained that since they died much earlier they have done their share of hell and have now attained heaven. Symbolic of (1) no pain or punishment is permanent (2) one goes through pain to finally achieve pleasure / peace (3) evil is just a part of the ultimate good

D Dom The Bhagwad Gita that was written during the Mahabharata is intended to be practical. It was a ‘steel cuts steel’ of sorts in the practical world. Karna was at head of killing Ashwatthama (who otherwise couldn’t be defeated) unfairly thus the same for Karna who couldn’t again be defeated. Duryodhan again had let his darker side overcome his good side through his life and during the final battle he couldn’t be defeated owing to his body being made Vajra by his mother. Moral is if you want to defeat bad, you have to at times become bad too and thus taste hell.

Nisarg Dalal i disagree. The Mahabharata spawned the Bhagwad Gita. Everyone who fought in the war went to heaven. The war symbolifies life and what it says is everyone reaches heaven after their stint in hell for whatever wrongdoings. Hence even Yudhishtir had to go through a moment of hell and watch his brothers there for the one lie.

I have a deep impact of mahabharat on my conscience.. It changed my life.. I used to think these are all fairy tales.. but fairy tales or not.. the statements, the talk of wisdom and everything written in it is what we should follow.. when you follow mahabharats path, there will be no right or wrong path.. only 1 path which leads to a life which we are intended to live.. and our goal should be to attain self-realization and Knowing your soul.. we are aware of our bodies.. but we do not realise we have a soul.. understanding your body is different than your soul leads to self-realization.. knowing it + feeling it within yourself that you have attained it what we should look for.. this world is full of chaos and "Moh-maya". Nothing is actually worth except self-realization.. I urge everybody to read mahabharat in the actual form it is intended to be and not in TV serial forms.. Read Shiv puran.. Do not follow the god Shiv if you do not want to.. but just understand the Life Truth and values written in it.. You will never wander in your life.. anywhere you go, you will have your composure if you do this.. your physical presence might get defeated but you will always be happy from inside.. nothing will ever defeat your inside.. I hope as many as people read my comment and lead to a peaceful life free of bad thoughts and conflicts..

At the every initial episode of Mahabharata, named Adiparva, Mother Earth urged Lord Vishnu that she can no more take the burden of human, specially Kshatriyas. Vishnu consoled her and said that he will take birth in Avatar (Lord Krishna) and will reduce her burden. The whole war of kurukshetra was planned to destruct Kauravas, Pandavs along with his own Yadava clan.

After Mahabharat after many centuries, as per folk stories, the descendents of King Suyodhana (a.k.a. Duryodhana) of Hasyhinapur, who were secretly raised up in Ghandhara formed the Gourid dynasty. The descendents of Purishravas of Balhika kingdom were later formed the Mughal dynasty. The descendents of Ekalavya were formed the first Empire of India, the Maurya Empire.

Now I get why my state Uttarakhand and neighbour Himachal Pradesh has so much influenced from Mahabharat. In so many of our villages you will find resemblence in cultural aspect and beliefs. In our history it has a mension of Pandvas being at Uttarakhand. Moreover one of our community believes to be the ancesters to Pandvas. It might have been during their journey to Himalyas via our Mountain states.
