      Great, that's the wonderful thing about pictures and especially video, you can filter through them, do your own research and then go to the garden center and SEE THEM FOR YOURSELF and make sure that they are "what they are"! AND, get the local scoop from the experts who live and garden in your area! Because they flower later in the year (which is really good because it extends the interest beyond spring), we usually ship most of our plants then, but if you speak to your local garden center folk they may be able to get you some earlier if you wish. As you may know we deliver to hundreds of mostly family businesses located through out our region and you can find their location by going to this link: grownbyoverdevest.com/retail-locator/

    Hello David! Just recently discovered Overdevest because I purchased Blue Jean Baby Russia sage at my local independent garden center La Serra. It pays to read the tags! LOVE all of your videos, especially those that instruct on how to prune. I have been going through your library looking for videos for the plants and shrubs in my garden - and have been devouring several videos daily. Wondering if you would consider posting a video on how to prune/care for Rose of Sharons both as shrubs and as standards? Many thanks to Overdevest for this amazing video channel, the wealth of gardening knowledge is truly priceless.

      Thanks, it is great to hear you are finding our efforts helpful. We will certainly bear your request in mind, and be happy to post a video on pruning them. All we have to do is find some that need pruning! We used to have some specimens in our display/trials area, but they were taken out in a renovation project a few years ago, and the ones we have now are nice, but still quite small. So, leave that with us and stay tuned. Meanwhile, it is wonderful to learn that you are scrolling through the extensive (and growing)library of videos on our channel, and enjoying the content.

    • @OverdevestNurseries
      @OverdevestNurseries  Před 2 lety +2

      Brian, it is a little tricky because Blue Chiffon is absolutely beautiful but is is not the most vigorous item. So, it will be important that you do all you can to get it established with a really good root system i.e. good sized hole, plenty of organic matter and a little fertilizer once it get going. Then, it will be a matter of selecting the most vigorous and straight potential leader, snipping out the other bushier basal growths, training that one shoot up a stake or bamboo cane until you get it to the height you desire... probably about 4-5' (initially) then allowing it to send out side shoots to make branches and all the time trying to get the leader to extend upwards to make the tree shape. It will obviously take years to train but eventually, if you can manage it - it could be GORGEOUS! Good luck and keep us posted of your progress.

      Hibiscus syriacus has been cultivated and enjoyed by gardeners across the temperate world for a very long time. It is the National Flower of Korea and has been cultivated there from time immemorial and was introduced to Europe as far back as the 16th Century.
      Over the centuries numerous pink selections have been introduced and because it is so resilient, accommodating and easy to grow they are a regular feature in gardens especially in older neighborhoods. The BIG (and very important) difference in these semi-double selections compared to most of the older ones like the ones you refer to, is that they are sterile or nearly sterile and produce very few seeds!
      These older selections are notorious for producing lots of nuisance seedlings, and therefore are considerably inferior to the selections we feature in this video. 😉💚👎

So I’m planing to plant couple of those to create a private screen, I want to plant in the south corner about 10’ away from my home (full sun, zone 6b, clay soil)replace a pine tree but my husband is worried about the root system to damage any electric wire or foundation , so what is your advice in this thank you!

    • @OverdevestNurseries
      @OverdevestNurseries  Před 2 lety +3

      They do not have a vigorous root system like poplars and Willows etc. They tend to have a root system that remains near the surfacevSo you should be OK
      If in doubt, check and perhaps take a few pictures your local garden center and get their opinion.

    What is the diffrence between blue bird and blue chiffon? Is the color the same?

    • @OverdevestNurseries
      @OverdevestNurseries  Před 11 měsíci +1

      The colors have similar "blue" shades but we prefer Blue Chiffon because it is a better grower and the semi-double flowers with their overlapping petals and central anemone like "puff" appeal to us better too.
      That said, each of us have our own preferences, so probably, the best thing to do is visit some of our partnering garden centers: grownbyoverdevest.com/retail-locator/ and take a close look at the plants and flowers for yourself. Both are beautiful (and if you have the space), would merit a place in your garden.

    Now I think I am going to give the pink one another try. The lavender is a flop in my experience.

    • @OverdevestNurseries
      @OverdevestNurseries  Před 2 lety +3

      The pink one is the bushiest, and amongst the most vigorous of the selections, so you should see it prosper and be able to enjoy it for many years. My advice is take your time and make sure when you are selecting your plant, that you pick only from the healthiest, freshest, and best quality specimens you can find at the most reputable locations. There's an old saying in the nursery business "there's the BEST and then there's the REST"!!!
      That's the beauty of being able to go into a garden center and see all the plants right there before you buy them!
      The choices we make at time of purchase are critically important and a tired, poorly grown and maintained, stressed out plant is obviously likely to struggle (and sometimes needs to be put into "intensive care" to get it to recover and thrive again). So, it is worth taking your time, doing your research, driving (if necessary) a few extra miles, and paying a few dollars more..... because that all helps get the BEST results and over the long life time of a shrub, that is really very, very little!
      Then of course, make sure you give it the best start possible buy planting it properly. That means digging a generous sized hole, incorporating organic matter, watering etc. Here's a link to one of our videos that will show you how I like to plant my new specimens: czcams.com/video/xybT3obydPw/video.html
      Follow this "time honored" advice, and you should be able to have a gorgeous, healthy and very rewarding Pink Chiffon thriving in your garden that will bring you years and years of satisfying pleasure and enjoyment!

    Are these sterile?

    • @OverdevestNurseries
      @OverdevestNurseries  Před měsícem

      One of the many features of these selections is that (unlike many of the old fashioned varieties which prolifically set lots of seed ), we very seldom see any seedlings come up anywhere around the base of the plants in our trials.
      It is probably not true to say that they are sterile, because they have the capacity to produce a few seeds occasionally, but this is rare.
      We hope this helps.
