  • Who’s Sharon and why does she have a rose named after her? Well, not a rose rose, technically a hibiscus. That’s right today is all about Rose of Sharon’s - how to care for them and which to plant. My name is Whitney at NatureHills.com and I’m ready to jump right in.
Rose of Sharon is a hardy, woody, deciduous Hibiscus shrub that is offered as both shrub form and in tree form. They have a slightly open, upright growing habit and produce tropical-feeling single or double blooms. Pick between the older, larger varieties or the newer more compact additions to the category.
These plants love sunny, well-drained, locations and flower on new growth each year which means you can prune them in early spring before they start to grow without diminishing the flower power. I’m going to go over 5 must-have’s here but keep in mind there are MANY more on our site you should definitely check out.
    5. White Chiffon® Rose of Sharon
If it’s the clean bright look you're after, then White Chiffon Rose of Sharon is the shrub for you. It gets 8-12 feet tall and only 4-5 feet wide. Making it a stunning centerpiece to your gardens without holding too much valuable square footage hostage. It also makes a showstopping privacy hedge to create a little space between you and the neighbors. #5 White Chiffon Rose of Sharon - Growing zones 5-9, pristine white blooms, and great for privacy.

    4. Aphrodite Rose of Sharon
One look at Aphrodite Rose of Sharon leaves you no doubt it was correctly named after the Greek goddess of love and beauty. This shrub features rosy-pink tropical-looking flowers with deep red eyes. For those who long for the beach and warmer climates with exotic-looking plants, Aphrodite is a no-brainer addition to the backyard. #4 Aphrodite Rose of Sharon - Growing zones 5-9, tropical-looking flowers, and a pollinator magnet.

    3. Purple Pillar Rose of Sharon
Unlike Aphrodite, the Purple Pillar Rose of Sharon doesn’t need much space at all. In fact, it’s more of the most unique variety in the family because while it gets 10-15 feet tall, it only spreads about 2-3 feet of space in the garden to flourish. Plant this in a tight spot near the back and watch it take your breath away with its striking giant pink and red streaked blossoms. #3 Purple Pillar Rose of Sharon - Growing zones 5-9 with a tall and unique growing habit.

    2. Danica Rose of Sharon
Danica Rose of Sharon is a personal favorite of mine. The pink petals, ruffled center, and magenta edging is just so alluring. I could sit around and look at it all day. Plant it next to your patio to enjoy while spending evenings with friends or in the front yard for all passerbyers to enjoy. It’ll get 8-10 feet tall and 4-6 feet wide making it a great option to use as a screen to hide any unwanted fixtures from sight. #2 Danica Rose of Sharon - Growing zones 6-9, stunning ruffled flowers and a winner of the Royal Horticultural Society Award of Garden Merit.

    1. Blueberry Smoothie Rose of Sharon
Oh man, if you liked the ruffled petals of Danica, then you’ll LOVE Blueberry Smoothie Rose of Sharon. This shrub covers itself in double giant ruffled blue-violet blossoms all summer long. It’s won the heart of our head horticulturist here at Nature Hills and it’s not too hard to see why! Imagine one of these planted as a focal point in your garden or maybe even on a container right up on your patio. It’ll be the talk of the town and a real hit with the local pollinators too! Blueberry Smoothie Rose of Sharon - Growing zones 5-9, fantastic purplish-blue ruffled blossoms, and pollinators will love it.

The Danica is a show-stopper! Can you tell me the color difference between double pink chiffon, sugar tip and peppermint smoothie? What is the lightest pink? Thank you!
