  • Hopefully this project has a better outcome than the previous projects this summer.... Most of the projects this summer have ended in failure....

    Thanks for this series, I look forward to seeing this play out for I have a 445 that’s going to need some attention soon! Great machine I enjoy mowing with it more than my 1025R.

    I will be watching with interest. I have a 445 that has seen lots of use. I hope you go ahead with the rebuild. Some of my major issues are; excessive crankcase pressure. It will blow the filler cap off. Dont know if its related but the drivers left plug carbons quickly and leaking HD oil in the area of the power steering control valve. Having said that my 445 with 3pt is an excellent fit for my acreage. The snow blower, 60" deck and tiller all work well. Thanks

    This happened to my 425, the pervious owner did an "Engine Rebuild", he didn't properly seal the gaskets, the valve seal on the left side by the oil fill was shot. Also warped the valve cover enough to the point of failure. I experienced the same exact symptoms, it would struggle while adjusting the throttle, oil looked clean but had a fuel smell, ran rough on the same cylinder, and just ran like garbage. The plastic oil fill tube was caked with white sludge, so I immediately assumed it was fuel or coolant mixing with the oil. On cold start it shut down while raising the throttle, and ran rough. It had about 1440 hours on it, an ran just fine after the repair. The coil was out, as I assume they ran it like that for too long, it made that same minimal improvement, but still ran rough. It sounds to similar.

    I will be watching for this series. Also subscribed to this channel. I looked at a 445 with 4WS this July but passed it over for an X540. The 445 had some transmission issues and the 4WS and EFI spooked me a bit. It was still a neat tractor though.

    I'm a year late on this video. I'm looking at 445s as I speak. My interest in your videos is just to familiarize myself as much as possible as it is a new model to me. I can't say I agree with some of your comments. Particularly those referring to the wisdom of tackling a project machine. Sure, it may cost the same as what you refer to as a "good machine", but that good machine may very well be one minute from a similar issue. You seem to think all of the work will bring you to some equivalent used tractor. All those new parts should have a longer life than those in your "good machine". You then know what you have, you gain familiarity and knowledge and to most who tackle these projects, the pleasure of doing the job. After all, most who would undertake such a task are likely to be more interested in the project than cutting grass. So maybe you should limit your comments to solving the issues and leave the conjecture and decision-making to the viewer. But, that being said, thanks for posting it. There is value in it.

      I don't disagree with your thoughts at all. You are also correct a "good machine" may only be a minute from a major failure, as any machine is. I also don't think all of the work will bring you an equivalent tractor, theoretically it should be better is some aspects, but it will bring you to one of equivalent value. It has been my experience that 4/5 times when someone buys a project they over pay on the project machine and then sink a lot of money into the project that wasn't needed or never finish the project. I've bought enough of those "projects" over the years to know the type. Watched a project 455 sell for $2,200 a couple weeks ago. Based on pictures, it needed about ~$1,500 in parts at minimum. At the end of the day the 80% of end users would be money and time ahead to go buy a good used one. The 20% of the equation are the folks you are thinking about. You understand the value of time spent working on a machine, you recognize the value of newer parts, and it seems like you enjoy the work which means I would guess you have the tools to do the work. I've visited way too many folks to help them work on their machines, two pairs of pliers, an adjustable wrench, and a 100 piece off the shelf socket set is about all you should expect in an average garage.

    Fuel injector is stuck open. Fuel has washed past the rings into the oil. Will probably need new rings and hone cylinders. Also while you are in there might as well replace any worn parts too. Just my 2 cents worth. 445 is a great tractor!

    Honda civic batteries are a great addition, you want the 51 vs the 51R to keep the pos on the correct side

    My guess echoes others. Stuck open injector, and I would guess the intake manifold has a more direct shot to that cylinder than the other. I would have to look at my 445 and see.

    Sounds like the injector is rats. Have a 1996 455 3pl rear PTO 54" 300hrs, 98 F1145 72"sd 4500hrs,655 2wd 1200hrs and 855 4wd fel 1500hrs. Paid $5000 Australian for the lot 4 years ago. All had issues spent about $4k in parts but collectively I'd get $25,000 - $30,000 if I'd sell them now. It was a selling the property for retirement home sale. I did offer more but she wouldn't take it. I also got a 4720 cab with 400cx with 120hrs for $10k at the same time which was pristine. She was a friend of my mum's.

    All the information we didn't tune in for. Nobody cares about where you got it or what size deck is on it. What needs to be fixed and how did you diagnose and fix? That's what we tuned in for. zzzzzzzzzzzzz

    Good tractor, 60" decks are terrible for plugging up. 54" deck is better.

    Being EFI does it still have needle and seat and float? I would say something has failed in that area letting fuel into the crankcase. I'll be very interested to find out.
    I'm surprised the oil wasn't the 1st thing you checked even before firing the engine.

    Sounds like my 425, how can you tell right off the bat that it's running on 1 cylinder?

      He can by the shaking of the engine, also if you feel. The valve or exhaust cover on one side and it’s cold that cylinder is not firing

      The Igniter goes bad & it will run on #2 fine BUT #1 on & off Firing, Mine acted up most of a summer, as usual I replacer Both Coils, Cam Gear, Plugs Wires Timer, Then realized After You Tube Sites The igniter went Bad. That was 800 hours * now at 1100 hours My Regulator Shorted. BEST Tractor I ever had & parts on EBay & all ?? Maybe total cost parts, oil, filters ?? $ 300.00 over 21 years.

    seat and tires, please stop. no reason to replace those, it just needs to run and mow. Seat covers are cheap.

    We didn't ask for a rundown on the whole tractor you talk too much just get to fixing the problem if you're going to have a video

      He tries to show us which projects are worth your time and or money. If you don't have a clear view on the whole picture how can you decide? It's not always just about the mechanical end of it. This is good solid and informative content. You don't have to watch if you don't like it.
