- Hey you guys! Well, I wonder if our dad saved the best for last? What do you guys think? Mia and I are in awe in Neil's technique, style, approach, musicianship and control! The fluidity in his drumming was intense! He crossed his hands as he played! He used every toms and drum hardware in his set! I am still speechless as I am writing this! LOL! Probably the hardest song to play on drums or all of rock music!
Neil's drum kit is actually two separate kits. When he first started his solo, he was using his electronic kit primarily. After the kit rotated, he was on the analog set. What you referred to as a xylophone is actually a MalletKat, which is a programmable set. He can trigger music sections off it and sample all sorts of sounds. Glad to see you kids enjoying some classic rock licks from The Professor! There's a saying that goes, "Neil Peart is your favorite drummer's favorite drummer!" He was that good.
He was also a humble man. At the top of his career, he sought out advice and lessons from one of the great drummers, Freddie Gruber. From that experience, Neil went on to be even greater.
@@Grimalken1969 So true. Neil was not a man to rest on his laurels...he always had to improve his craft. I believe I read that he sought Gruber out because he was unsatisfied with his ability to improvise. So he worked on that aspect.
@@RaymondBCrisp Yup, Freddie pointed out to Neil that he was precise, had great timing, but it was robotic. He taught him that how you played, the touch and execution was equally important. That turned on a light for Neil, and he went on to be one of the greatest of all time. Even today, the mark of a good drummer is when he can proudly say he can play the drums from one of songs of Moving Pictures. :)

He refined his solo over the years to incorporate his influences including Jazz, African rhythms & Big Band. Some parts were always part of his solo & other bits were improvised every night. I was lucky enough to see Rush 7 times over the years in the UK from 1983 through to 2013 & his solo was always a highlight & nobody left their place for the bar or toilet during it. Girls, the Professor on the drumkit....... xx
Correct on both counts! That was Buddy Rich, and Louie Armstrong. Neil was a great fan of Buddy, and did two tribute albums of his music. Wonderful analysis. You both get it! I'm convinced Neil would have been flattered, and sure your father is proud of both of you.

Quick story on Neil. As you can probably tell, he had a LOT of drums. When he passed, he asked that all of his equipment be distributed to schools in Canada. Not just a few schools, but EVERY school in Canada. He had so much equipment over the years that every school in Canada was able to get several pieces of equipment.
From the Canadian head of education: “There are currently two cargo ships heading towards Vancouver carrying most of his kit. We expect to start breaking it down and dividing it across our 15,500 public schools, which should give each classroom at least three pieces of equipment each, with hundreds of cymbals left over. Thank you Mr. Peart, you will not be forgotten.”
Nice. Next time I am in Canada I should stop by a random school and ask if I can see their Neil Peart piece.

He's written about a dozen books. You can find them on Amazon and Audible. I'm a truck driver so I've listen to about 7 of his books so far. When he was alive (Rip Jan 7 2020) he wrote most of the lyrics and a lot of the music for the band.

Neil was a one of a kind, and was a hell of an author as well. He was always trying to find new ways to improve and even at the peak of his popularity decided to get trained by a drumming legend to improve his skills when he was already the worlds best.
He made me proud to be a Canadian.
You girls and you’re dad have great taste. What Neil Peart just demonstrated was a history lesson in all the different drumming styles and how to make a drum solo sound like a musical piece, not just slamming away on the drums but actually using all of them with incredible showmanship. I had the privilege of seeing them in concert 28 times since 1976 oh, and the honour of meeting all three members. They are all monster musician in their own right and Fabulous stupendous human beings with huge senses of humor. I hope your dad had a chance to see them live and although you girls will sadly not have the opportunity to, you do have an immense body of work from the Bandto enjoy for years to come!!!

Greatest drummer ever. We will never see another drummer like Neil. The music world will never be the same. Also the greatest lyricist and percussionist ever. Lost a legend. He never stopped learning ways to get better. RIP Professor!

Yep that was Buddy Rich. I'm impressed you caught that. If you haven't seen John Bonham's solo from "Moby Dick" (with led Zeppelin) I strongly suggest it. I know you already did Danny Carey playing "Pneuma". Bill Ward from Black Sabbath and Keith moon from The Who are also excellent drummers. It's hard to say who is best at an instrument because we all have different measures of what's best. Is it speed? Accuracy? Style? Ability to complement the bands music with how and what they play as their part of the music? Ability to please the ear, and whose ear (we all have different taste in what we like musically), etcetera. You choose who you think is best for your criteria but enjoy the talent all of them have.

Right, music is an art, not a competitive sport, but it seems most people don’t seem to get that. All I ever read is “this guitarists is better than that one” or substitute drums or any other instrument for guitar. All art is subjective and music has so many components, by what criteria can one musician be judge the best? It’s so stupid. Like you said, is it sheer speed, accuracy, complexity?
Then, who is the arbiter of who or what is best? So many idiots proclaim this musician is the best or better than that person, as if it’s a fact. I can’t help but shake my head and think that they’re missing the whole point of music. How can you immerse yourself into the music, as intended by the composer, when you’re intent on trying to figure out who is better than who? In the end, does it really matter?
I know many songs that I enjoy that are great in their simplicity, but then the musician in me also seeks out the very complex, like Rush. I can enjoy both without having to judge which is better and who is better. All three guys in Rush are phenomenal musicians who never stopped improving their craft over their 40+ year career and very few other bands can that be said about.

Yes! Great drummer! You young ladies need to react to Loudness. They are a great Japanese band. Their early stuff is in Japanese but their first English release is great! It's named "Thunder in the East." Crazy Nights and Heavy Chains are the most known songs but the whole album is great! Akira Takahashi is their guitar and he is known as the Japanese Eddie Van Halen. You ladies are doing a wonderful job and your parents should be proud of you. Please consider my request and I hope to see your reaction soon.
I saw Loudness when they opened for Motley Crue for the Shout at the Devil tour.
They blew everyone away. One of the best opening acts I've seen.

Your favorite drummer, favorite drummer
Amazing piece of music. This is obviously more than just a drum solo. It has many parts and it is carefully thought out. One thing that is interesting is that Neil at this point was really into Jazz style of playing and studied with Freddie Gruber in the 1990's who was an old Jazz drummer/teacher. I can no doubt see the Buddy Rich influence with some of Neil's snare work,,no doubt. He even ends this with tribute to big band swing jazz and you could see the great Buddy Rich as a young man. Neil was a HUGE fan of Buddy....

I suppose this is why I watch others' first reactions to the artists and music of my youth: It transports me back in time, and I enjoy it with the same giddy, breathless wonder and awe as that exuded by you two young gals! I was a young Canadian high school lad back in '74 when Rush released their first album. I became an instant fan, and my appreciation and enjoyment of what, decades later, grew to be a very deep and extensive catalogue of amazing music played expertly by three virtuosos, has never been betrayed. Thank you, again, and I surely hope you continue on down the mystical rabbit-hole which is Rush and their music! 😁

He did a "history" of the progression of drums from various genre's & influences throughout the world. His influences (Buddy Rich et al.) and how he changes grips depending on the style or sounds he wanted to produce. (and show off a little with the hand cross overs)

The amazing thing is that Neil wrote most, if not all, of their lyrics. He wrote books of poetry, travel books, books on rhythm; he was always learning, forever honing his craft on the drums. He will be missed.

Yeah, Neil pert is one of the best drummers along with,in order, Buddy Rich, Louie Belson,jazz drummers, rock drummers, John bonahm,Carl Palmer of Emerson lake and Palmer, Ian pace of deep purple, black Sabbath's drummer,of course , I can go on and on, I never heard this drum Solo, I listened to Rush for the first time in 1978, I liked your reaction to it, I just heard this drum Solo for the first time again, I reacted the same way, like you two, very impressed, good to know that your dad is a drummer and Mom is a singer,my parents,they were musicians too , Dad a drummer, Mom a singer,they played for a living in the jazz seen, thanks you for this 🙂.

I would like to say first. I am very proud of you both for exploring my past and embracing history. Neil was named the "Professor" . Everything he played was written in sheet music 10 years before this recording. He wrote every drum solo he ever did. He also wrote all the lyrics for all the songs except the first LP. funny thing my brother lives in Hagersville Ontario Canada where Neil was born. This looks great to see a video like this. There are documentaries on him he is hyper intelligent and a super kind man, and we will all greatly miss him forever.

It is..... VERY COOL...SUPER COOL, that when he performs " The TURN " & (The entire stage he is on does a 180)....and he stands up and also turns 180 degrees and sits down at another entirely full drum set that now is facing the audience.....the new set has perhaps 7-8 different cool instruments to play. And, of course he is a master of all of them 😛

I love to see young people appreciate The Professor. I met him once,when his bike broke down. I recognized him immediatly,but didnt let on that I knew who he was. He was an incredibly nice man,and was curious about what I had been doing that day,(hunting)! We waited with them untill the help they had called for arrived,and shared our peanuts,beef jerky,and apples and cheese with them. With Neil and his security rider.I guess something I said gave away that I knew who he was,bc he thanked me,gave me an autograph,and posed for a pic!
I had killed the biggest deer of my life that day,and my meeting with Mr Peart made me forget about that! I TREASURE THAT PHOTO!
