- "The First Time Ever I Saw Your Face" is a 1957 folk song written by British political singer/songwriter Ewan MacColl for Peggy Seeger, who later became his wife. At the time, the couple were lovers, although MacColl was still married to Joan Littlewood. Seeger sang the song when the duo performed in folk clubs around Britain. During the 1960s, it was recorded by various folk singers and became a major international hit for Roberta Flack in 1972, winning Grammy Awards for Record of the Year and Song of the Year. Billboard ranked it as the no. 1 Hot 100 single of the year for 1972.

Lyrics:
The first time, ever I saw your face
I thought the sun rose in your eyes
And the moon and the stars
Were the gifts you gave
To the dark, and the endless skies
My Love
And the first time, ever I kissed your mouth
I felt the earth move in my hands
Like the trembling heart
Of a captive bird
That was there, at my command
My Love
And the first time, ever I lay with you
I felt your heart so close to mine
And I knew our joy
Would fill the earth
And last, til the end of time
My Love
And last, 'til the end of time
My love
The first time, ever I saw
Your face
Your face
Your fa-ace
Your face - Hudba
This reminds me of the first time I ever saw my wife's face. She was 12 and I was 14. 5 years later we were married and that marriage lasted 53 years until God called her home May 1, 2018. I love you still Wanda and will as long as I live.

One of the most beautiful songs ever written about how it feels to be smitten by love……sung by one of the most beautiful female voices of all time.
I was 18,when I first hear this song. Now at 69,it as beautiful as ever.
Me too and it still makes me cry ... 50 years on !
Am I ashamed at that? No.
Good grief 🤦
12 years old for me, really miss our generation of music.
@@raymcnulty5252 Me too. I was reminiscing only today of the great mix of music in the 70s - glam rock, punk, prog rock, new wave, disco and things seemed so much easier with less big government nanny state.
I met my husband when I was 16,married him at 17,he played the guitar and sang this song to me on our honeymoon, he was taken from me the next day from a car accident, I'm 60 yrs.old and when I hear this song I still cry

I just lost my dear husband a few months ago and we loved this wonderful song. She's so beautiful and incredible.
The prettiest female voice that I've ever heard. Hands down.......period 😊😊😊😊😊😊😊
Roberta comes from a generation that had real talent. No studio trickery from this lady, just pure soul.. I remember playing this song four time in a row on a jukebox in a working class bar in Rhode Island in the late 70s and nobody complained. She's just pure magic...
Absolutely correct 🥁🥁🥁
How could anyone complain listening to such a beautiful song from a truly wonderful lady, If I was with you at that bar I would of bought you a drink for having such wonderful good taste,

That hurt just to read. Sending you all my love.
My mom passed away yesterday/She had been on hospice for several days and I played this and the other songs she loved when I was a child for her-She was no longer talking but mouthed “thank you” when I asked if the music was ok-I keep listening to it bc it makes me feel so close to her
May your Mom rest in peace. Cherish that moment for all the days of your life. God bless you.
My mom loved Roberta Flack too. She passed away in 1994 when my son was 3 months old. My son is now older than I was then and I still miss her. Hugs friend ❤️
I saw my BEAUTIFUL for the very "First Time" in the spring of 1980. Seven years later we were sweetly and devotedly married with three children later. Man am still sweetly in love with my wife after 36.8 Years of Marriage. God be Praised, God be Magnified and God be Glorified. Berakah-shalom.

@@cosmokitty1004 "Still the one"?
This song speaks to the deep love I have for my partner of 35 years. I was fortunate enough to marry my high school sweetheart, she was 14 and I 17. I was an uninvited guest to her birthday party. We never met or saw each other before that night. I remember to this day the first time ever I saw her face; it was love at first sight, and even after so many years together as husband and wife, her beauty both inside and out, melts my heart. We opened the dancefloor to this song on our wedding night under the stars in a tight embrace, we danced together, eyes closed with tears of joy flowing. Thank you Ms. Roberta Flack and everyone involved in writing and producing this song. Mutual love can be so beautiful.
My bro was in the Navy, he was on the ships that help evacuate the Vietnamese. He said this song always make him feel better.
This song takes me to peaceful place,i listen with my eyes closed.what a voice.
Somehow, Roberta Flack is now 83 years old. I remember how she enchanted us with this song, and Killing Me Softly. Gosh but the years have slipped by so quickly...
I also love Reverend Lee by Roberta Flack🌷

Another beautiful song from Ewan MacColl, one of my favourites.
Real Story: I say to my husband, "Do you remember this?" He said: "Sometimes you Forget that I am 10 years Younger than you." My response: "Seek help from JESUS!" ... LMBO, of Course he didn't recognize the song. He was born in 1974!!!

I will admit, when I was a teenager in 1975, I used to listen to this song over and over on a 45 RPM! It would just repeat and repeat. I would fall asleep on the floor in front of the stereo listening and waking to this song again! What a privilege to hear such this fantastic composition. Thank You Roberta!

Roberta held “ us all “ in the palm of her hand, eh?? I’d sing along with her too, what a voice, just perfect. 😅
Amazingly, she's playing the piano as part of her own accompaniment while she's singing!! This is not easy 😕. You'll usually do one thing fine and really botch the other..She sings beautifully with nuance and delicacy, while also playing the piano 🎹 😀 as she sings. Amazing to me... 😅

I agree she has a beautiful voice but why did she have to muck about with the lyrics?
Only a fool would think they could do better than MacColl.
ROBERTA FLACK SHOULD BE IN THE ROCK AND ROLL HALL OF FAME. SHE WAS INSANELY UNDERRATED.-She made songs that NO ONE could sound like/imitate/duplicate/replicate, or copy. She was an extrememely good music teacher of inner-city students in Washington, D.C. Her piano skills were top-notch. She was also INSTRUMENTAL in the upcoming, and rising of, Peabo Bryson, Donny Hathaway, and Luther Vandross.-Believe it or not, we may have NEVER HEARD OF THOSE THREE MEN, HAD IT NOT BEEN FOR ROBERTA FLACK.-Period
THE most beautiful love song ever. ❤
I remember the first time I saw the face of the woman I married and loved her here on earth for 58 years before God called her home. I still see her face daily.
I have never wanted to hear anyone else sing this song, except for Roberta Flack!!! This is "her" song, and she "owns" it!! What a beautiful, beautiful voice!! I could listen to this song over and over again!!!🥰🥰❤❤👍👍🎵🎶

Thumps down!! who in their right mind will put thumps down ? obviously those who are soul less and never have been loved ...sad !!
On my parents wedding day my mom walked down the aisle to this song. To this day this song makes me cry because my parents were the epitome of this song. They met Dec 25, 1973, got engaged Fed 14, 1974 and were married on Aug 17, 1974 and were married for 25 days shy of 25 years when my dad passed away. My mom never remarried and always wore her wedding ring and eventually got an eternal wedding ring of my dads name in his eye color on her ring finger. Their love was so pure, whole and perfect. They loved each other beyond their souls. When my mom passed away a year ago, my dads spirit was there waiting to take her home with him and I know I’m my heart that they have cherished every day in the past year together. This song describes their love perfectly and makes me ball my eyes out to this day. I wish songs today could be this powerful.
Your story is powerful ❤️
For many people, that is what one young singer does with every song she sings: her own and covers of others, including this one. She and Roberta Flack would have been so wonderful together.

I've watched so many covers of this from Celine to George Michael to Jennifer Hudson and no one comes close to the original. Especially during the verse where Roberta floats from high to mid to low to mid and back to high. Its SO effortless where other singers either struggle or avoid it altogether by switching the key. She's simply one of a kind.

Beautiful woman beautiful song.
This song always, forever always, reminds me of my wife who passed away unexpectedly twenty years ago. It was uncanny, I was in a restaurant and she was a waitress. And I heard, "Can
I take your order?" I turned and to this day I cannot find the words to describe, when our eyes met, the instant love we both felt. For me, the whole world stood still for a long second and for her, she turned into a frozen statue. So I am shedding tears again......and all I can say, " I'll see you soon, Loredonna....I love you."
The most beautiful love song ever written and the greatest voice ever heard, a musical monument.

I used to hear this song on the radio while growing up. I always thought it was nice but it doesn't hold meaning until you can truly relate to words of a pure unadulterated love and admiration of one. The words mean everything of a love i had, my first love. Things didn't work out, we were from different cultures, his parents wanted him to stay within his culture. I let him go. I never been so heartbroken other than losing my parents. We went out separate ways. Miraculously 30+ years later he found me. He's divorced now. I'm married and live in another country. We are in contact, at the beginning i was overwhelmed with feelings but now have managed. He realized he should have not listened to his parents and married for family. He should have married for love. I'm married to a beautiful man who knows my value and will never leave him. My 1st love and I still remain just friends but sometimes songs like this take me to my youth and make me cry... bittersweet 🥹😢😍
"and I knew our joy
Would fill the earth."
Pure poetry.
That is the most beautiful love song of all times

@@pinksapphire.2262 ~ Hello Lori, thiss song was written and composed by Kirssty McColl's father, Ewan McColl ..
Wow...i m in love with someone long time ago...this song just described how i felt...stiil...already 40 years ago....still loved him...still brings tears to my eyes....but sadly we parted with deep brokenheart...still miss him
This was my husband and my song…we were married for 26 years . My best friend died of a massive heart attack and every time I hear this song I tear up and go back in my mind of all the great love and memories I shared with him. It’s been 24 years and I love and miss my best friend my forever love, my husband and father of our 2 grown kids. First time ever I saw your face I knew we were meant for each other. God called you home way to early.
This song, Roberta Flack's voice, the music, it has always, from the time I was a little kid, stunned me silent.
As an adult, this song causes me to cry with love, joy, and sorrow over knowing the day will come when my love, or I, will leave this world and the other will be left behind.
This song reminds me of the 12th of March 2006, when my beloved (didn't know it then) opened a locked door for me, and I saw his face, most importantly his eyes, and immediately the street, and sidewalk, went dead quiet and it felt like everything stopped. My mind raced, and I thought "what the heck??" How could I be thinking of marrying this person, and feeling like I knew him in another life. I just felt incredibly safe, intrigued, and full of glee. We had met on MySpace, through a friend of a friend, and had only talked online a few times. It was the fall of 2005, his dad had just suddenly died, and mine was dying cruelly(and young, only 55) of the EVIL that is CANCER. We were both serving in the Army Reserves, enjoyed country music, both wanting to have children, and found that we had many life experiences in common.
I love you, with all that I am, Samuel, and will until my last breath.
Thank you, for coming into my life, and for honoring me with your love, and devotion. Our children, and I, think you hung the moon :)
I love you, more than I could ever express.
I've fallen head over heels in love quite a few times in my life, but that was a mixture of lust, love, desire and attraction, beautiful memories though! This song makes me think of everytime I given birth to my 5 children, which was pure love and for each and one, I fell in love all over again! Giving birth to my children is the most precious moment in my life. They are grown up now, but the memory of seeing them for the first time, giving them a kiss for the first time, feeling their body against mine and their heart and breath for the first time, it was so strong love emotionally and the happiest moments in my life. Thank you Roberta for this amazing beautiful song...I was born myself 1957 when this song was written. 💗🙏💗

And the first time, ever i kissed your mouth
I felt the earth move in my hands
Like the trembling heart
of a captive bird
That was there,
at my command
That was there, at my command
My love
And the first time, ever I lay with you
I felt your heart so close to mine
And i knew our joy
Would fill the earth
And last, til the end of time
My love
And it would last, til the end of time
My love
The first time, ever I saw
Your face
Your face
Your face
Your face
Thank you
Roberta Flack announced in one of her concerts that she got the idea for the song from a mom looking at her newborn child for the first time. I believe that concert is on CZcams
For the last few years I have been buying vintage records for a dear friend Bryan's juke box as a joint birthday/Christmas gift. He would give me a a list every year. His health had deteriorated and he had got into the habit of just texting me the song title/artiste when he thought of a song he would like. This was the last song title he sent me. He died this month aged 83 and this was played at his funeral yesterday along with the Teddy Bears' To know him is to love him. The final song was Elvis and Jailhouse Rock. Miss you Bryan, RIP. No more pain.
I always cry when I hear this song.
48 years passed and you still stand out among them all. Voice, raw presence, genuine feelings....no distractions just being!

The greats of Roberta Flack, Dionne Warwick, Diana Ross, Tina Turner, Gladys Knight, and Aretha Franklin, they don't make em like this anymore and plus the music industry doesn't give them the credit of being acknowledged at Music awards for being the pioneers who paved the way. A beautiful song for ballards they don't write like anymore
You missed out Shirley Bassey !

This reminds me the first Time I saw my Future husband. I looked at him and I knew inside I'm going to marry that man. I never met him or spoke to him. I just saw him and knew. We became best friends and got married. the song breaks my heart too. because I lost him 11 yrs and 11 months after we Were married and I miss him so much. He passed away 11-2011
Before he got sick I kept seeing the Number 11 or 1111 almost everyday for a month. I kept having Visions. literally visions when I was a wake. of someone giving me flower. I still have visions of being given flowers. Maybe it's my Jim . I loved him so much. It hard being a lone.
